What's the difference between Nappy Headed Hos and . . .

What passes today for "cutting edge entertainment" on the local airwaves?

The thought occured to me today Mark Madden will say things on a regular basis that makes Imus' comment on the Rutgers women's basketball team seem like a nursery rhyme.

For instance, Madden has called Franco Harris a "Half-Breed."

He has had on a guest and presented him as credible claiming Roberto Clemente was living a life as a Carribean Drug Lord.

I have heard him champion calling the Polish stupid, heard him keep alive a rumor that Kordell Stewart was a homosexual, and heard him use his position as a bully pulpet to get Jim Wexel fired and completely change his position on the writing talents of Bob Smizik.

Now, I understand what Mark's role is. He's a talk show host in the mode of Pete Franklin and Bulldog Briscoe.

And it could be argued he has done it better than any such style talk show host in any market ever has.

But if we have to punish Don Imus for a comment- ugly as it was- said with a chuckle; should we consider the style of Madden and so many of his contemporaries on Pittsburgh radio?

What Imus said was hardly as ugly as what John McIntire said on his blogs between his KDKA and Zone gigs- when he said he was happy Gerald Ford had died because now he would have the opportunity to have sex with Betty.

And that's cleaning up Mac's comment a lot.

We now have PCNC championing the arguementive and "shocking" qualities of their hosts- be it Fred Honsburger screaming at us on a promo "YOU'RE THE ONE I'M TAKING ISSUE WITH!" or Lynn Cullen making facial expressions of contempt to seemingly every caller.

We have Tim Benz whining- not commenting- WHINING- about every conceivable issue- and as a result getting a prestigious morning gig and mid-day sports talk show host.

We have Eddy Crowe writing on his blog "religion was in charge during the dark ages."

Al Sharpton has pushed for the firing of Imus because Sharpton believes Imus was irresponsible on the airwaves.

In Pittsburgh, it seems that irresponsibility has gone on for a long time.

It's all a matter of whether anyone complains.

I've always believed that no one outside the Madden cult listens to Madden, and they're not going to complain.

What gets me is that in Ebonics, "ho" is the term for all women, not just women of easy virtue. According to a great many African-American recording artists, all women are "bitches and hos". And "Nappy headed" might not be the most elegant way of describing curly hair, but all Imus did was refer to the women on that basketball team as "curly haired women". He simply spoke it in Ebonics instead of English.

So, is the controversy over a Causcasian using a term that is perfectly acceptable within the African-American community? Would the Hispanic community get equally upset if he had used a phrase in Spanish to describe Mexican women?

Its amazing what sets people off on the air these days and what doesn't. I've heard a thousand things worse than Imus' line in the last month and yet if he's not careful he's headed to the Greaseman Hall of Shame.

The thing that just floors me is Al Sharpton going after anyone on any basis. He doesn't have a moral leg to stand on.

And what sort of trouble did Rev.(?) Jesse Jackson get into when he referred to New York City as Hymie town? None. Pratt4Life, thanks for your comments. You were right on my friend.

The difference is that "hymetown" was spoken by a teflon coated black man who has done far worse and "nappy headed hos" was spoken by a lightning rod white guy who didn't have the backing of his entire community. Trust me if Oprah went on the air tomorrow and said that the Pittsburgh Penguins were "dope smoking white trash" she would be on the air the next day, the next day and the day after that. Reverse racism is out there whether you care to admit to it or not.

I would bet you that if confronted by the question "what's the difference between the two" Jesse would duck and cover and the reporter would be out of a job by the end of the day because of the outrage of the black community.

Comment from Kinky Friedman, author, song writer, philosopher, former Texas gubernatorial candidate and long time friend of Imus.

"It's a sad day in America when one guy gets fired and another gets a Grammy for the same line".

Kinky is stupid if he really believes that.

The grammy winner (who?) was not talking about specific people, who could be named. Imus was.

And I just want to say I can't beLEEVE he said what he did about Gwen Ifill lo those many years ago. Yipes

And you DO know that "Ifill is the cleaning lady" thing was taken COMPLETELY out of context, don't you?

I guess I'll explain it. It was a bit where Ifill, who'd just been hired by PBS, came to visit the Reagan White House.

In the bit, the parodied Reagan is described as so out of touch with minorities that Ifill is prejudged by the President as being the cleaning lady.

Now, is that offensive? I don't think so.

Actually (after much searching) I did find that, but I had to throw "Reagan" into the mix of my search. And he said it wasn't the fake Reagan saying that, it was a David Duke type character.

At any rate, I don't think I would want to do anything ever to tick Gwen Ifill off.

Why not?? What god like powers does she possess? She's in the public eye and became part of a radio sketch. It comes with the position.

Actually two members of the House are drawing up terms of impeachment against Cheney as we write. They are not only telling him "That's all you get" but "Go Home, you can't have any more."

The great and powerful wizard's curtain has been pulled back..........
