What passes today for "cutting edge entertainment" on the local airwaves?
The thought occured to me today Mark Madden will say things on a regular basis that makes Imus' comment on the Rutgers women's basketball team seem like a nursery rhyme.
For instance, Madden has called Franco Harris a "Half-Breed."
He has had on a guest and presented him as credible claiming Roberto Clemente was living a life as a Carribean Drug Lord.
I have heard him champion calling the Polish stupid, heard him keep alive a rumor that Kordell Stewart was a homosexual, and heard him use his position as a bully pulpet to get Jim Wexel fired and completely change his position on the writing talents of Bob Smizik.
Now, I understand what Mark's role is. He's a talk show host in the mode of Pete Franklin and Bulldog Briscoe.
And it could be argued he has done it better than any such style talk show host in any market ever has.
But if we have to punish Don Imus for a comment- ugly as it was- said with a chuckle; should we consider the style of Madden and so many of his contemporaries on Pittsburgh radio?
What Imus said was hardly as ugly as what John McIntire said on his blogs between his KDKA and Zone gigs- when he said he was happy Gerald Ford had died because now he would have the opportunity to have sex with Betty.
And that's cleaning up Mac's comment a lot.
We now have PCNC championing the arguementive and "shocking" qualities of their hosts- be it Fred Honsburger screaming at us on a promo "YOU'RE THE ONE I'M TAKING ISSUE WITH!" or Lynn Cullen making facial expressions of contempt to seemingly every caller.
We have Tim Benz whining- not commenting- WHINING- about every conceivable issue- and as a result getting a prestigious morning gig and mid-day sports talk show host.
We have Eddy Crowe writing on his blog "religion was in charge during the dark ages."
Al Sharpton has pushed for the firing of Imus because Sharpton believes Imus was irresponsible on the airwaves.
In Pittsburgh, it seems that irresponsibility has gone on for a long time.
