For me, it was the Challenger explosion. I was in kindergarten at the time. I can remember hearing that a civilian schoolteacher was among those killed and becoming very upset, since I adored my own teacher!
I want to say my mom was watching CNN at the time as I got ready for school (being in morning kindergarten), but I'm not certain.
Another tragedy I remember distinctly from that era was the 1987 plane crash at Detroit Metro Airport, where over 250 people were killed and a young girl from Arizona was the only survivor. There was, of course, lots of coverage of this on local Detroit TV news. I also watched a lot of CBC whenever I was home sick from school, so I remember stories like the 1995 Quebec independence referendum and the founding of Nunavut as the third northern territory (1999).
The first major story I remember hearing about on radio first was, interestingly enough, the death of Princess Diana, and that was on a CBC network station. I listened mostly to music stations on radio, which by the late '80s/early '90s were hardly primary sources for news. 9/11 I also first heard about from TV. Later on I remember first hearing about the death of Teddy Kennedy and the assassination of Benazir Bhutto on NPR's Morning Edition.
