What's the latest with Salem and WGUL/WLSS

I had heard that the sales were supposed to close the middle of June. Does Salem now own these stations? Are they just waiting to get studios built out for them before flipping them? Will there be any Sarasota studio presence for WLSS? Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm curious about that as well. How long can you have a "pending" call letter change before you're forced to either make the change or abandon the request?<P ID="signature">______________

Looks like they've already got a lineup and a website:

Thats going to put pressure on 1040 WWBA for sure. Good thing they have old Mark for AM drive. That gives em a local presence which they need.

I'm guessing WDUV gets those WGUL listeners looking for adult standards... if that's what they call it now. I'd call WGUL, as it is now, a full-service/gold/AC, and I'd bet a true adult standards station, ala MOYL, would still do well here. But, where would you put it, and could you continue to sell it?

I bet the WTAN stations could do adult standards and make money with it. From what I understand Dave and Lola are getting a little tired of accepting bad checks from the various 'vanity hosts" that they have on there. You could run the station out of Clearwater, and sell the three as one station. No hassles with out of line sports hosts..no need to deal with people of dubious quality coming in and out of the place..Hire a savvy ops guy like Steve Michaels, and hire me to do imaging. Have a local morning and afternoon show and sell it to the advertisers for a fair price. Easy to run..the only game in town, and no one breathing down your back wanting to take you over..C'mon Downtown Dave..let's do it! Florida's Classic Hits..T-A-N (Tampa bay's ADULT NETWORK!)

I think WDUV would be a better station if they took all 3 guys from WGUL and went live from 5AM to MIdnight.

Heck, I'd take 5 am to 7 pm live. I heard a good song on WDUV by accident the other day. After the song, the same old tired image announcement came on with the old guy who sounds like his teeth are coming out. Same stuff they've run for years. I couldn't change the station fast enough. I guess they don't make enough money now so Cox will never spend a dime on them. It is #1 so pinch every penny you can out of the operation...?

What would you do with a guy named Dick Ring? Keep him on the radio, or set him up in a porno shop.

The cash call was dropped a couple of weeks ago, and the business report today was being done locally, not via AP radio.

I'm betting Monday, August 1st will be the day. It's just a guess though...I got no inside scoop or anything.

Would work, except for the slogan, which makes them sound like they're X-Rated.

Will there even be a WGUL-FM? On 7/14, the St. Pete Times' Weekend section had an ad for some kind of function in Tarpon Springs (don't remember the specifics, unfortunately). One of the sponsors of the event was "Real Oldies 106.3 WJQR" (I think).

And with WGUL-FM being on 106.3 -- you'll get the picture.

WTAN would do much better with a format that consisted of Imus in the morning, a weekly call-in sports show, and the rest of the format devoted to music from the late 50's to early 70's The music format could be devoted to songs that you do not hear much anymore (i.e. not the songs that Clear Channel plays over, and over, and over............. and over, and over :(
