What's The Point?

Just wondering: what's the point of putting a standard def. version of your main channel as a simulcast on your subchannel? Three channels in the Sacramento area do it 19,42,and 64. All are Spanish language if that means anything.

Examine carefully. 19-2 is on 64's signal, while 64-2 is on 19's signal. This means that if you receive one or the other (remember, different transmitter locations) you can receive both Univision and Telefutura regardless.

As for 42, the spots are different. 42-1 is the San Francisco feed of Estrella, while 42-2 is the Sacramento feed of Estrella.

Dunno about Sacto but here in Phoenix RF 10 has such lousy coverage on their digital signal they simulcast on 10.2 in SD so people can actually watch their station. Very poor implementation of digital and equally poor "solution".

For those not in Phoenix, 10.2 is actually a subchannel of Fox-owned sister-station KUTP/45, RF26. There's about a one-second delay on 10.2 compared to KSAZ 10.1, and some TVs have to tune in 45.2 instead of 10.2 to get the station.

If Fox was smart, they'd swap the KUTP and KSAZ transmitters, putting the latter on 26. KUTP is a MyNetwork affiliate with little of substance to offer (mostly 2nd- and 3rd-tier syndicated programming - they no longer carry the Suns), I would think they'd want the better coverage on the "mother ship." It would also put another nail in Gannett's coffin since KPNX/12 would be the only commercial station in Phoenix on VHF (KAET/8 is also there, but it's PBS).

Good suggestion on the xmtr swap. I've wondered that myself.

I don't understand your "nail in the coffin" on KPNX though. I have no trouble with 12 and 8 has been clean for a number of months now (xmtr power increase?).

I've had daytime reception problems with 8, 10, and 12 in recent weeks. It varies depending on time of day. With the sun inching its way northward (the South Mountain towers are NW of me) as the days get longer, maybe it's some kind of solar disturbance that "isn't supposed to happen" with digital signals.

But if I want to watch NBC (and outside of Meet The Press and sports, there is absolutely nothing on KPNX or NBC in general that I have any desire to watch), I can point the antenna southeast and watch KVOA/4 (RF 23) from Tucson.

In Bakersfield, KBFX 58 (FOX), which is considered a low power station, is on their sister station's full power signal , KBAK 29(CBS) Virtual channel 33, on the sub channel 58.2 which is a 480i wide screen format, while they broadcast full 1080pHD on their low power station, virtual channel 29 at 58.1, the reason is to extend KBFX signal to the high desert, Mohave, Lancaster, Barstow, Palmdale, and Ridgecrest, originally 58.2 was the ONLY signal, until recently 58.1 was added.
The reason KBFX cant be Full power HD is because of KMPH 26, they have a hugh signal from just north of Bakersfield to Merced, and originally KBFX used to be a Sister station to KMPH, when they were owned by Harry Pappas, and they simulcasted most programming from KMPH.

All other Fresno stations (CBS, NBC, ABC, My, CW, Univision, Telemundo) TL are located at Meadow Lakes much further north than KMPH 26, and have no (Good) signal in Kern County.
