What's the Rarest (Self-Recorded) Video in Your Collection?

We had an interesting thread awhile back to the tune of "What's the oldest video you have that you recorded?" Today, I ask, "What's the rarest?" Something that you, yourself, taped off-air. Maybe an obscure special, a news event, some classic sign-on/sign-off or between programs continuity, a priceless blooper or major screw-up, etc. Something not commercially available (or only available in edited, truncated, or otherwise altered form) and that no one else you've encountered caught. The kind of thing that, when you pop it in now and then to watch, you say to yourself, "Man, I'm damn glad I thought to run a tape that day!"

...my own choice here would be the breaking news coverage of the 9/11 attacks on KTLA/5 Los Angeles via Dish Network, then the afternoon and evening coverage that HSN relayed from the CBC via Newsworld International. (Obviously, I suspect the latter is a lot less "rare" in Canada as it is in the States.) After mainly watching Dan Rather on CBS and having seen the NBC and FNC coverage on rebroadcasts, I still find the way Peter Mansbridge carried himself through that day and evening to be on a higher par than his Stateside counterparts...

I quite agree, and I have often found that it is a refreshing change to see U.S. events covered from elsewhere, with an "on the outside looking in" perspective that avoids our own insular prejudices and attitudes. One thing I found interesting about the CBC coverage: while U.S. nets were initially hesitant, even reluctant early on to acknowledge the WTC crashes as a terrorist attack (even after the second plane hit, some broadcasters were still trying to convince themselves that some navigational error or other innocuous cause was to blame), the Canadians immediately and almost matter-of-factly asserted that it was obviously terrorism. Perhaps we were at first hampered by a self-righteous "it can't happen here" attitude.

Frankly, of all the coverage I have seen, I give the lowest marks to Dan Rather and CBS. Rather was frequently tongue-tied and spent a lot of time resorting to the same repetitive phrases. (I know it was emotional for all involved, but Rather has been far more professional in the past, and other anchors managed to keep their feelings in check and present the unfolding horror clearly and intelligently). And CBS seemed woefully unprepared to cover a breaking news story of this magnitude: they had very few people available in key locations, relied mostly on a single, not terribly well-situated camera shot of lower Manhattan, and had precious little video footage that they ran over and over and over.

But enough -- I don't want to divert from the main topic of this thread....

I think I qualify for this category...

First, there's a segment from CBC SPORTSWEEKEND previewing Game 6 of the Montreal/New York Islanders series. It aired on May 5, 1984.

On that same tape is a CBC ad break from that same date.

There's also some university volleyball on that same tape (the recording ends when the men's match ends and the next recordings are of various stuff from '86 and '87).

I have a tape of footage recorded off of WVII in 1985. A few samples below...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XD8ZmlCCyQM (March 24, 1985)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QywNcNsYZYE (April 24, 1985)

I think this one was a total surprise, and one that remained a mystery to me until recently, 30 minutes worth of an episode of THE DAVID SUSSKIND SHOW from 1986...

It's not much, but a few seconds of WLBZ footage from late 1984...

Nothing rare in my collection but I do have a good friend of mine who has on tape a mid 70's newscast from Harrisonburg, VA's WHSV-TV "TV3 Action News". What made this newscast "special" was their weathergal Suzanne LaValle. At the time she was pregnant and right there in the studio as she was doing her weather LIVE, her water broke.

In 2004 when WHSV celebrated their 50th anniversary it was annouced that Suzanne would be coming back to WHSV for a one time appearance ( she has since got into selling real estate ). My friend calls up WHSV and asks them if they would be interested in a copy of that tape. Ah WHSV said no even though Suzanne did talk about the incident during WHSV's 50th.

How about a recording of the PBS TV movie "The Lathe of Heaven", recorded from KTPS, channel 62 in Tacoma, WA in the summer of 1980? This movie became a cult classic, and is based on an Ursula K Le Guin novel about a man whose dreams can change reality.

Why is this a rarity, when it was rebroadcast on PBS several years ago and subsequently released on DVD? Well, for two reasons. The first reason is that the original broadcast includes the Beatles' song "With a Little Help From My Friends" on the soundtrack, whereas the rebroadcast and DVD release had to substitute a weak cover version since they couldn't clear the rights for the Beatles' version anymore. And the second reason is that the DVD was made from a very poor master tape, because the original 35 mm film print was lost. Since there weren't many VCRs around in 1980, I'm guessing not many folks recorded this one in the original version.

A few Cubs & White Sox games, including the mid-season, post-strike exhibition game between them at Wrigley Field, from 1981. This was the last year for Jack Brickhouse doing Cub games and Harry Caray calling the Sox. All games were on WGN-TV Channel 9 (recorded OTA in suburban Chicago, not on cable).

A comedy special called "Chicago Stuff" starring Rich "(Son of) Svengoolie" on WFLD from 1984 or '85. Apparently a pilot for a possible series that went nowhere. This was when Metromedia owned Channel 32.

Aside from a couple of episodes of "Captain Nice", somewhere in my stuff I have some CNN raw video sent back via satellite from the first Gulf War. One thing I think I still have is Charles Jayco(C.D. Jayco if you remember back to NBC Radio's "The Source" days) getting ready to do a stand up on a rooftop when something blows up real close to him and just off screen. He hits the floor(yelling something) and comes up putting his protective head gear on.

A WANE TV 15 Ft Wayne documentary "Last Voice from Kuwait" about the then GM of WANEs contacts with a ham in Kuwait during Gulf War I

That, of course, should read "Rich "(Son of) Svengoolie" Koz" on WFLD.

I have several..now stashed away in the basement since I'm into You Tube now.

Original pilot episode of The Monkees where Davy Jones is seen playing rhythm guitar instead of tambourine and maracas..this is also the episode where Micky introduces two black and white film clips of Davy and Mike's screen tests near the end of the episode.

Several episodes of "Trailer Park" hosted by Tom Davis on the Sci-Fi Channel. Wacky sense of nerd humour introducing 50s/60s era monster and sci-fi "previews of coming attractions." Usually aired on Saturday afternoons in the 90s right before MST3K.

"Behind The Music-Grand Funk Railroad" taped off VH-1..back when it STILL had music videos.

My 2001 camcorder recording of the Ohio Renaissance Festival with The Daring Develinis,Hey Nunnie Nunnie,The Mud Show and The Naughty Navels (opah!)

1955 Grand Ole Opry Christmas Show-TNN

1999 Cleveland Browns Expansion Draft-ESPN (They basically havent gotten out of expansion mode, sadly..after 9 seasons)

What's Going On-One of the rarest of Goodson-Todman Shows-1954 (off GSN)

This may or may not be a surprise, but I also have the full series of WHAT'S GOING ON from 1954 recorded off of GSN.

I did think of another rare recording just now: I have a few minutes of a schedule for the CBC Parliamentary Television Network (the predecessor to today's CPAC - Cable Public Affairs Channel). The schedule is for November 17, 1986...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3qybMG8RuA
(Only 30 seconds of it is presented as the same image was shown throughout the few minutes I have of it.)

I just remembered something else! Because it has (at this moment) rarely appeared on anyone's tapes, a station ID on WTVS-56 from around September 1986. I don't think anyone else has it posted online but myself. Here it is...

Also, some "Cinema Seven" bumpers that aired on WXYZ-7 on September 14, 1986 during a broadcast of the 1968 Richard Burton/Clint Eastwood film WHERE EAGLES DARE. (The tape only had two-thirds of the film; I later got a better quality version in full.) Here it is...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Un5ThgcS5JU

Oh, and I also have two rare commercials from a CBC tape that was recorded in August of '84 during a broadcast of the 1982 FIFA World Cup Soccer film called GOLÉ. These are the commercials...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32LT1sn-MAM (Budweiser)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWbL84bPBMs (NDP Campaign Ad)

Do note that most links I bring here were encoded in higher quality. Some of the videos that say "HD" indicate I used better encoding methods. Most videos in general prior to March 2008 were done in Windows Media.
