What's the story at WGCL?

I just saw on titantv that WGCL plans a major overhaul
of its daytime schedule with the departure of Guiding Light.
Let's Make A Deal is apparently going to run at 10 AM, Better
Atlanta at 12:30, and Young And The Restless at 3 (GL's former
timeslot). Can anyone confirm this?

Will be interesting to see how Y&R goes up against General Hospital in the 3 pm hour. Of course GH is not as good as it used to be.

Since 46 isn't one of their stronger affiliates, you have to wonder what CBS is thinking or will do. The Y&R lunchtime audience in Atlanta will be very annoyed by this. However, I think other major market affiliates are moving the network's daytime line-up around, too.

Any other stations in the south making any similar moves, since this is the only region where GL has had decent ratings in the past few years?

WTVR Richmond will run LMAD at 10 AM; WIAT Birmingham at 9 (CT). Both stations ran GL in the afternoon. In Orlando and Miami GL has been on in the morning, so Deal will air then as well.

Perhaps WGCL felt Y&R was the strongest lead-in to its 4 PM newscast that it could find. WRAL Raleigh and WLKY Louisville run Y&R at 4 and have been extremely successful not only neutralizing Oprah (who airs on the ABC stations in both markets) but in providing a large enough audience to make their 5 PM newscasts number one in their respective markets.

CBS is expecting a minimum rating for those who move LMAD to the morning. If ratings are not delivered, the affiliate will owe the network compensation. Not sure how they define compensation here but I bet it's inventory on the station in possibly another upgraded time period. As for the Y&R move to 3pm on 46, the network can force them to return it to its original time period if the numbers suffer after a certain amount of time. You can bet CBS is closely watching this move. I think the public outcry will hurt 46 since Y&R does extremely well for them at 12:30.

I remember a few years ago 11 Alive moved "Days Of Our Lives"
to 4 PM and it turned out to be the best lead-in its 5 PM news ever
had; when it went back to 1 PM the news ratings went down and,
as we know, "Dr. Phil" is on at 5 now. Did NBC force 11 to move
it back? I know the station's management (I think Craig Dubow was
g.m. at the time) took a lot of heat for that call.

What is Better Atlanta at 12:30pm? Don't we have enough local shows(ex Atlanta & Company and now Good Day Extra)??

Too much local programming? I thought the complaint is usually not enough local programming on radio or tv.

Looks like Better TV is a syndicated show. It's got it's own website www.bettertv.com

There is a syndicated show called Better TV. The one on WGCL
is called Better Atlanta. Whether there's a connection I don't know;
I do know that 46's morning show is called Better Mornings.

"Better" is syndicated out of WFSB in Hartford. I guess you could call it a "lifestyle" show, kinda like Martha Stewart's. There are provisions for the local stations to insert local segments.

The trend is certainly towards more local programming on local TV. (a lot of it repeats, then again an awful lot of network and syndicated programming repeats as well!)

"Better TV" is a part of "Better Homes and Gardens", which is a publication of the Meredith Corporation. WGCL is owned by (and the flagship of) the Meredith Corporation (broadcasting division HQ now based out of WGCL's offices). WFSB/Hartford is also owned by Meredith. Do the math. WGCL has to pretty much air this per corporate orders.

"Better Mornings" is named after said Meredith publication, although it has nothing else to do with the magazine. Meredith is trying to use their successful magazine to prop up their TV stations (synergy).

I'd like to hear the reaction when people tune into WGCL
at 12:30 tomorrow and "Y&R" isn't there. Maybe the 3 PM
slot will work once people get used to it (as 4 PM does for
the show in Raleigh), but I expect a whole lot of outrage in
Atlanta tomorrow.

Just when you think CBS ATLANTA was trying to do something right, they fail once again. The news operations made a huge 360, but the programming is awful! How many people actually watch the 700 Club? Price Is Right on at 10am and 11am? The Better show from what I seen yesterday is boring! No more Ellen and Peoples Court at 5pm. How dreadful!

Price Is Right is at 10 AM only until Let's Make A Deal starts Oct. 5
(but that's about six of one, half-dozen of the other, if you think
about it), and Ellen is now on 11 Alive at 4. My encounters with
CBS46 have been very limited, since I was in Georgia when WAGA
was still the CBS affiliate, but I wish some other station would relent
and pick up CBS.

With the move of Y&R to 3pm, WGCL is now airing the program in SD instead of HD. Apparently, WGCL still cannot record, and then playback, a sat feed in HD (which I can do at my house using a variety of methods). I know most people who watch Y&R probably watch it in SD, but this change to SD, more than the time shift, is a slap in the face to the thousands of us who purchased HD televisons to actually watch programming in HD.

That makes sense. Meredith owns Fox affiliate WHNS/21 Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville, which has a show called "Better Carolina." I would suspect all the Meredith stations have something with "Better" in the title.

WGCL is airing syndicated programming in HD (currently..."The Insider" is in HD). Why this capability does not extend to CBS programming is beyond me.

WSB-TV and WXIA are wired for 100% HD operation (including commercials). WXIA does not time shift network programming, but WSB-TV does. WAGA has no local or syndicated HD outside of news (the 1 AM replay of the 10 PM news is SD). WGCL is HD except for commercials.

Also...WGCL is centrally hubbed with WSMV/Nashville (NBC) and WHNS/Greenville (Fox) out of the WGCL studios. This hub is new, and should have been 100% HD out of the box. They just saved money in their attempt to save money.
