What's the story at WGCL?

"Better TV" is a part of "Better Homes and Gardens", which is a publication of the Meredith Corporation. WGCL is owned by (and the flagship of) the Meredith Corporation (broadcasting division HQ now based out of WGCL's offices). WFSB/Hartford is also owned by Meredith. Do the math. WGCL has to pretty much air this per corporate orders.

"Better Mornings" is named after said Meredith publication, although it has nothing else to do with the magazine. Meredith is trying to use their successful magazine to prop up their TV stations (synergy).

That makes sense. Meredith owns Fox affiliate WHNS/21 Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville, which has a show called "Better Carolina." I would suspect all the Meredith stations have something with "Better" in the title.

The program is syndicated by Meredith. I'm not 100% certain all Meredith stations carry it, but they probably do. (actually I know there are some Meredith stations that don't as there are two duopolies..) There are a number of non-Meredith stations that carry it as well -- Journal's WTMJ in Milwaukee for one.

The station I work for (in Nashville) only has one HD satellite receiver -- we don't have the capability to record more than one sat feed in HD at the same time. If we had two programs feeding simultaneously, one would have to air in SD. I don't know if that's what's going on at WGCL but it's certainly possible. (the issue hasn't come up for us)

Also...WGCL is centrally hubbed with WSMV/Nashville (NBC) and WHNS/Greenville (Fox) out of the WGCL studios. This hub is new, and should have been 100% HD out of the box. They just saved money in their attempt to save money.

It's still under construction and not up and running yet.

I noticed that "Better" is not confined to the Meredith stations;
it airs on non-Meredith stations in Denver, Cleveland, and San
Francisco. The San Francisco station is a CW affiliate in a duopoly
with KPIX (CBS o&o).

That "BETTER" show sucks!! CBS Atlanta would've been better off sticking this into the overnight wee hours. Sooooo many people got adjusted to watching Y&R at 12:30, especially during lunch breaks. Heck, I grew up watching Y&R at 12:30 in Charleston, SC on WCSC-TV. Just when you thought CBS Atlanta was making great improvements. As far as the news operations, are they going in the ALL FEMALE way? Adam Murphy would make a great evening anchor at CBS Atlanta, but he's not a feamale. WSB-TV and FOX 5 remains my news source.
