What's the verdict on KBKO?

So... 15 months later, what's the verdict on KBKO? Do you think it's where it needs to be? What direction is it going in? Up? Down? Do they have the personnel that will last, or do they still need to make changes? What have been the best and worst parts so far? And where do you see them in one more year?

Thoughts?

good question, but I think there is more interest on this board about 103.9 and 105.3. They are the same age. Are they here to stay?
______________

OK, what's the verdict on 96.5, 103.9, and 105.3?

OK, 105.3 has obviously been a huge success. I think it is the best rated station CC has in their building.

103.9 has probably been a disaster. Lots of personnel changes, the music hasn't connected with this community, and their most memorable moment has been getting sued for giving out a toy car.

At least 96.5 can say they've had a better run than that (although ratings wise for their particular demos-- I only see 12+ on all access-- I don't know who's been better).

More interest? 105.3 shows that CC can create a Spanish format and the locals here can plug it in and let it run. Not much local control over what is virtually a satelite format.

103.9 is a mess...half-hearted attempt at best from a group that didn't know what the heck they were getting into in the first place. I love the stations that flip just because a challenger has gone away (Kiss leaves, Play comes in...K-Lite leaves now The Breeze tries). Being the second in a format only will pay off if you DO IT BETTER AND STICK WITH IT! K-Lite had started to beat KGFM fairly consistently in their demos, but it took 2 years to do it. Play didn't start well, and has finished worse.

That brings us back to the ORIGINAL QUESTION...KBKO. I know what I like...and I like KBKO's music, morning show and energy better than KUZZ. But it will take TIME for it to really dent the 25-54 audience...most of which has only known one country station and never had a button on their radio set to 96.5 when it was Hip Hop, so they can't sample. It's gonna take persistence and some creative marketing...I'm SHOCKED to see CC not spend the dollars on KBKO to make it a great challenge. They have the product. They just need to start screaming at every rooftop that it exists. Not sure if the new PD is up to the challenge or if the GM and OM really want a winner to take away from KRAB or Fox. My advice to KBKO..KEEP FIGHTING!!

I agree with a lot of your points. It does take a long time to build awareness for a new station, especially when you have a monster like Buck's station in the market. I also agree the morning show is better, but the music I'd have to say is about the same. You hear the same hits on both stations. People I've talked to at CC say they don't think the GM or OM are concerned about KBKO outshining their other stations... a winner is a winner. But I think the amount of transition may have been a problem (I don't know how much of that is under their control-- people quitting vs. people being fired), and it seems like Buck may have more money to throw at the fight. However, the morning show has always been a constant. I have never met the new PD, but I haven't heard anything bad, so he must be all right. I don't know what else they considered when Logan left. I think they have a much better chance than 103.9 to do some damage eventually with their respective audience.
Edited by jimmyjam on 12/12/05 01:47 AM.

Steve King... how many posts are you going make where you talk to yourself using all of your multiple screen names? It gets very annoying seeing you trying to be clever and hype your stations (and tear them down with another name)... please just get a new hobby instead. As a hint for the future... when you make another screen name... don't share it with all of your employees. It loses it's "magic".

If the poster would please e-mail the moderators with a list of all the screen names used by Mr. King, we will deal with it. The creation of multiple logins is a violation of the site rules and terms of service.
______________
