what's the verdict on "smells like the end weekend"

Overall, I give WXTM an A. There were some songs I havent' heard in a while, some were good to hear again and some weren't. Then there were some songs I don't remember ever hearing, again some I liked some I didn't. It was good to hear Rocco, (oh my god I'm drawing a complete blank, the guy that was Rocco's partner in the morning on the end, he was with Rocco this past sunday night and he was on solo yesterday 12-4), Pat The Producer, and Bull. As far as the DJing went overall, there was some rust, which is to be expected from people that haven't been on the air in 6 years. Tying in with the related post a little further down the board, here's what I'd like to see WXTM take out of this weekend (ie. hopefully this weekend was a sign of things to come).

1. Expand the playlist. It'd be cool to see 92.3 become a classic alternative station playing music from about 88-02. But, being more realistic I'd like to see bands like PJ Harvey, The Toadies, Veruca Salt, The Ramones, Stone Roses, etc. added into the playlist.

2. Drop "cleveland's xtreme radio" out of thier name. Throughout the weekend they were running promos calling themselves just "923 X". So either go with just "923 X" or come up with a completely different name.

3. This one is fantasy. I'd offer Rocco and "the guy who's name I always forget" (see 1st paragraph) the Mon.-Fri. 7-12 shift, Bull and Pat The Producer weekend shifts. Or I'd put just Rocco on during the week and put "the guy who's name I always forget" on the weekends. Heck, I'd even go along with putting Rocco on weekends and either Pat The Producer or Bull during the week. Yes, this would mean bye-bye Nelson, Fenix, Iggy, and possibly Verlane. I know this would break the hearts of a lot of you reading this right now. Sorry. *yes, there was extreme (no pune intended) sarcasm in that last statement ;)*
 
I loved it, and I agree with all of your points, although
I was never really a huge fan of Rocco. I have always had a hard time buying that he was a fan of the music played on "the end". I always felt like he'd rather be on a station more like the current WMMS or even a classic rock station. It kind of reminds me of Kenny Roda talking Browns when you know he's a Steeler fan. Additionally, I thought he was the engineer for Radio One here in town. Would he leave that gig to do nights on 92.3...or wherever they would end up on the dial?

Overall it was great to hear the songs and the personalities. I hope something more comes of it. Maybe they can take a page from WKSU, KFOG or WHFS and put a couple of streams on the website. By the way, what ever happened to Howie Greene?

I think maybe the "other guy" you speak of was Tobin.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the "Smells Like The End" weekend as well. It was a complete surprise to me to hear what they were up to (I didn't do any of last weekend's imaging and found out about it on this board)!

I haven't even thought about some of those songs in 10 years! I have to admit, I didn't recognize a lot of songs because I was a WNCX listener in my high school years 1994-1998, and a WMMS listener from 1993 to 1995 ...and obviously when I worked there ;) ('99-'01).

Overall, I give it an "A" too, because any radio promotion that keeps me glued to the radio for 3 whole days is a success. Great work Kim, Nard,and everyone else at 923X!

By the way, I know they started the weekend with a loop of REM's "It's The End Of The World", did they end it that way too?<P ID="signature">______________

Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool too. But I'm only giving it a B. The music overall was pretty cool. Lots of fun!! I heard a lot of tunes I haven't heard on commercial radio in a while, and some tunes I had really no recollection of ever existing. I was more of a Next Gen WMMS listener back in the day, mostly because I couldn't pick up The End well in Parma.

Most the DJs were obviously very rusty, and at times I felt it became too much of a love-fest for themselves and for Xtreme. Rarely did I hear them talk about the music...and I really would have enjoyed more about the history surrounding WENZ. It ended up at times sounding very amateur/college. Hearing Ted do the imaging was very cool....if 92.3 ever does go full fledged alternative he would sound really good again. Two notable absences were Number One Son and Howie Green (last I heard Howie had an internet show a while back).

I thought playing that REM song for a whole 6 hours to kick it off was a bit much, especially considering it was only a weekend promotion. And what was up with all the repeats of songs? Heard the same Garbage tune three times. Same U2 tune three times. And "Rooster" by Alice In Chains was spun twice within 3 hours. Overall though, a very cool promotion....kudos to Kim and Nard. Just a reminder that those on the westside can enjoy that type of format on a daily basis over on The Sting btw ;) <P ID="signature">______________

I listened to WMMS more because of the horrible signal in Parma also. I used to always find it interesting that I could pick up The End in my car 80-90 miles away in Edinboro, PA but couldn't pick it up in my bedroom in Parma. This was before I understood how radio waves worked (ie directional signals, etc.)

On saturday one of the DJ's said Kim gave them the freedom to play whatever they wanted. If that was indeed the case, you can understand how there could be repetition.

IgroRadio: Tobin is the guy I'm thinking of. Thanks. The last two songs they played on Monday night starting at about 11:50 was Nirvana-Smell's Like Teen Spirit and the REM-It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine).

I really enjoyed listening to 923X this past weekend. I know on the website they had a link where you could give your opinion about what you thought. Hopefully alot of people liked what 92.3 did and Kim realizes the need for a classic alternative station here in town.

In the case of 107.9, their transmitter is way out east in Newberry, Ohio, over 25 miles from Downtown Cleveland! That's part of why their signal is so crappy
in lots of areas of greater Cleveland, especially west (distance) and south (among all the interference from the big TV and FM towers in the Parma area).

This is why the station came in way out in PA.....the tower is halfway there!

I really believe though that if they were to incorporate more of the classic alternative music...they should really blow the whole thing up. Drop the Xtreme. Get new DJs. Get all new imaging. Everytime you feel like playing Metallica, play Radiohead. Everytime you feel like playing Godsmack, play The Cure. Mix in some female artists. Play some good local bands (they do exist). Make yourself as listener friendly as possible. This could be successful in Cleveland, no doubt. <P ID="signature">______________

I would give them an A as well. It was great musically. I was surprised at some of the stuff they played. I really wasn't expecting them to do as good of a job as they did. I mean, Southern Culture on the Skids, The Ramones, and even that Dixie the Tiny Dog song haven't been on the airwaves in Cleveland in awhile...yet they were this past weekend.

I also hope this is a sign of things to come at 92.3.

What a great weekend.. Glued to the radio.. Makes me think of all the good times when The End was on the air...

If you have access to mediabase check out their programming for the weekend.. It will take you back in time to a great period in music. <P ID="signature">______________
