Hearing Oldies 96.1 still running the same jingles and liners, but the jocks and traffic people are calling it "96.1 WSOX". And the processing has been backed WAY down. Whazzup here?

That change was made at WOGL in Philadelphia a few years back, dropping "Oldies 98" for "98.1 WOGL". And they have done well in the overall ratings since, much better than many other FM oldies stations these days. Apparently dropping the "Oldies" title may help bring in listeners who like the music but don't want to identify as "oldies" themselves!

> > I gotta tell ya, if I was WGTY, I'd be buying billboards FOR WSOX right now---WARM had a poor book, and tied w/SOX 12+. If they blew up SOX and went country, WARM could pick up some of the oldies listeners, WSOX has a far superior signal to WGTY, and Susquehanna could be sitting pretty again.

Note to WSOX Oldies 96.1: leave the station alone! PA has the 2nd highest population of elderly & has a older than average population overall. 98.1 is being lead off of a cliff....dont go with it!

I have allways loved Oldies 96.1 - please dont mess with a station that has stayed true to the format.
______________

So then you haven't noticed that SOX added all of the 70s tunes that KOOL was playing before Clear Channel pulled the plug in 2001? There really isn't a "true to the format" oldies station left in this part of PA. SOX has evolved, but the format is in its last breaths.

As a veteran oldies jock, I feel your pain; however, when you see the legendary WCBS-FM drop the format and dozens of others switch to Classic Hits, you have to prepare yourself for the inevitable. My advice to you: research the satellite services... no commercials and you pick your format. I think people in your age group might just be one of the larger demos who abandons earth-bound radio for XM or Sirius.
______________

That is something we do not need, another country station. I'm still holding true to my suggestion: either a CHR to fill the void from WYCR and maybe a Jack. I think this will happen by years end for sure.

Nothing wrong with 70's music - CBS-FM has always played 70's, 1st as future gold then in regular rptation 10 years later. But the allways included pre 64 music.

But theres no local connection. Thats why I listen to Holiday on WOGL and Don K Reed on Golden 101.

Its one thing to hear that radio is nothing more than a glorified ipod meant for background music from people my age - its another to hear it from a radio vet.

You won't get an argument out of me about '70s music. I begged my PD for several years to add more from that era. I understood why we couldn't, but my personal thirst for '70s music never died.

I understand your need for local connection. All I am trying to say is that the writing is on the wall. The decline of oldies radio to me was the end of my career on the air, so please don't misunderstand what I am saying. Eventually, you may only have two choices for oldies - satellite and internet radio. Neither will offer you local flavor, but both will at least satisfy your craving for 'old time rock and roll.'

Again, I'm only pointing out the realities of the business. If it were up to me, Harrisburg's KOOL would be back on the air, on its original freq at 94.9, playing the goodtime oldies from the '60s and '70s... maybe even some '80s.

Oh, well... ob-la-di, ob-la-da...

I didnt mean you - a relative of mine who works in radio says that and it saddens me.

About oldies - from the resarsch that is avalable to me, people who like music from the 50's are able to tolerate 70's music, but not vice versa. That seems to be the reason WSOX has dropped the pre 64 tunes.

A new logo appears on the website! The slogan remains as "The Greatest Hits of All Time," but haven't the jocks been saying "Feel Good Songs from the 60's and 70's?"

BTW---The new logo is OK, but I liked the old design a little bit better.

Good answer. But add to that this: WSOX is going through all of the pains of dying that KOOL did four years ago. My advice to the jocks: aircheck, aircheck, aircheck.
______________

And according to stoneage.yes.com, 96.1 played "Every Breath You Take" by the Police---an 80's tune. Wow.

The station is just confusing as a whole right now---I just heard "The Greatest Hits of All Time" and "The Greatest Hits of the 60's and 70's" within ONE jock talk break, and the old voiceovers still say Oldies 96.1 not 96.1 WSOX! This transition was done poorly---when a station makes a transition, like a positioning change or slogan change, new sweepers and jingles should be in hand before the changes are put into effect on air! What a mess!!

Tony Griffin Productions: The Oldies 99X package is what they're running right now. Before the 99X package, it was Radio 1 from TGP.

I wouldn't be surprised if "Super Hits 4" begins airing on the new 96.1 WSOX sometime soon.

overall i like tgp jingles---actually groove addicts have a nice package for oldies 103 wods nice folks. good cutting edge sound......actually i think oldies/classic hits should go back to the good old shotguns and let the music stand out and have the talent handle the positioning etc......

I still think that the best oldies jingle package is Do It Again from JAM. Shotguns and acapella jingles are nice if you had a heratage Drake station like WOR-FM or 93KHJ, but a good jingle package can assign a melody to your station (and reduce the dependence on sweepers that seems to be taking over oldies...er excuse me, GHOT 60's/70's stations).
