What's up at 98.7

The music seems to be more like 96.9 these days, the morning guy left and now there is some gal there...Detour Dan seems to be distant, and I heard that PD was just fired. Can any body tell me whats going on over there?

This is a format change, and not so much on the sly. And yes, Joel has been let go, allegedly because somebody "out of town" thinks the target is the Mix.

Hey Bonneville...you're absolutely stupid, on both counts.

Changes have been made at 98-7 The Peak; many are subtle including the clocks, plus the shifting of a few weekend jocks, others not so subtle. You will notice the Peak has a new positioner--new in the sense that it's only been around a few weeks, "The Best of Everything", as opposed to "70s, 80s and Whatever We Want!" and they also ditched the sub-positioner "mountains of music, tons of variety". The imaging has been worked over a bit, ostensibly eliminating the "peakerman" character.

Joel is a fine program director and a good guy. I went in for an interview and met him in 2005; Hell of a nice guy and we just talked the business for over an hour... he's actually a guy that gets it--which is incredibly rare in the business these days. I hope whatever happens, he does well, especially given the climate of radio these days.

The rest doesn't really matter to me, but I really enjoyed the "Peakerman" character. That's really a shame.

If this is true, it's a HUGE loss for Bonneville. Joel hired me when he was PD/Operations Manager for Entercom here in Portland. There is no finer boss and he's a great friend. Joel is missed here in the Rose City. I have no doubt, he'll land on his feet somewhere.

This makes perfect sense in the twisted world of radio. The Peak had a pretty good image when it first signed on and built solid, if unspectacular, ratings. The minute they watered down the product and turned it into another Mix, the lost their unique sound. The ratings have been sliding for some time, but I think that's because the shift to a "Mix" sound has been going on for more than a year. Now they've made it official and the ratings will not be any better. There's no reason to "out-Mix the Mix." Do something CREATIVE!!! Oh, that's right... this is music radio. Creativity was let go in the last round of layoffs. Dang.

That is an absolute shame about Joel. What a stand up pro. About three years ago I was helping launch a format similar to 98-7 The Peak and had some questions about music categories, etc. I emailed Joel and asked if I could call him sometime and bend his ear for 20 minutes or so. Joel didn't know me from Adam. He replied with his cell number and told me to call him anytime. I got to talking to him about my old days at the station when it was K-Lite and he was a joy to converse with. Great programmer...great guy.

Joel, you'll land a great gig I am sure. I'd love to hear from you. [email protected]

Let me second that motion on Joel...I was his Chief Engineer at Emmis in Indy many years ago & I was so bummed when he announced that he was heading west. Arguably my favorite PD of all time...not only because he was a real person, but because he didn't feel the need to "put his fingerprints" on a product that was already working well. The man was born without the "ego gene" and the next station to snap him up will be doing themselves a favor of biblical proportions. You rock my friend!

BOTJ, that was my experience with Joel in Portland. The man knows what he wants and seeks out the people to make it happen and then sits back and lets his people work. Joel was a true door's always open manager. I loved seeing him everyday because he always was in a great mood and always with a smile on his face. It was a bitter sweet day when he left Portland. We lost a great boss and friend, but knew he was moving back to Phoenix, the place he and his family loved and missed.

I've known Joel for fifteen years. Had the pleasure of working for him on a fill-in basis at Sunny 97 back in '93-'94. There simply is no better programmer or human being.
