What's up at Fort Myers Broadcasting?

I noticed that 1460 WNPL-AM has signed on with a simulcast of WINK News Radio, but 1460 along with 1200 WPTK have signed up to air Seminoles Football this fall. Is WINK Sports Radio on the horizon? Could WPTK's days with Spanish language formats be done?

They signed up for the football games and coach's show according to Seminole ISP Sports.

SW Florida Sports Radio Scene
770 WWCN: ESPN Radio (talk/MLB/NBA), Marlins/Rays/Yankees/Red Sox, Hurricanes, Everblades, Firecats, FGCU, Westwood One (NFL/NCAA/Olympics/etc.), NASCAR
1200 WPTK/1460 WNPL: Seminoles, maybe Fox Sports Radio?, maybe Westwood One?
1410 WMYR/1660 WCNZ: Miracle
1480 WVOI: Gators
1580 WCCF: Rays, Buccaneers
98.9 WGUF: Buccaneers
96.1 WRXK: Dolphins
98.5 WDEO: Notre Dame

Bob in Naples has informed me that WNPL-AM 1460 has not signed on yet. He theorized that I heard 1240 bleeding over since I was close to the tower in Fort Myers. I agree with that, since it makes alot more sense. ;D

Thanks to Bob.

No. 98.5 does not sound like AM Stereo.

I have heard 98.5. I have heard AM Stereo (on the late, great WDCQ among others, since we're on the subject of WPTK).

98.5 sounds much, much worse than AM Stereo. It sounds like a very bad Real Audio feed. Like they're getting their audio from the 'Net (so why then have an FM signal)??

The crowning moment came last year (yes, they've been doing this travesty for this long), when I was up there and they went for something like 2 days with nothing but dead air (oops..."buffering" issue?).

Note to engineering: if you are going to have this horrid Mono audio, turn off the Stereo pilot...You can improve coverage.

The Naples Daily News reports WPTK will become a Fox Sports Radio affiliate, launching tomorrow at noon with Jim Rome. They will carry all 12 Seminoles football games and 6 USF Bulls football games. It will have a local show in the afternoon drive as well. 1460 out of Naples will launch with a simulcast in the next month and WPTK will see the daytime power go up to 50kw soon as well. This is good news for SW Florida sports fans that want Florida sports and not New York/Boston/Minnesota 24/7.

With 1200 beaming 50 gallons north in the daytime, does anyone see it becoming a force in the Sarasota - Bradenton market (especially if a lot of diaries get placed in North Port and Venice)?

I stand corrected. They are worse than AM Stereo. :D

While on the subject of FOX Sports Radio 1200 Sports Now (the new slogan for the station), WINK TV Sports Director Clayton Ferarro did a simulcast during the 6:00 p.m. newscast.

WNPL won't be on until early next year, as it is unbuilt. Maybe late this year...
I built two AM Stereo stations on Marco Island. Damn, they sounded good. Past tense, though.
