Whats Up At Mix 104.1?

WBMX sounds like a tin can now.... It was really good for a while, almost like they had kept the WBCN's processing. It is too bad that radio stations that are digital can't listen to themselves due to the delay between the studio and what is transmitted.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed. I tuned in to listen to Back To The '80s Friday Night a little while ago (which I sometimes do on Friday nights) and it sounds like I am listening to a 64kbps stereo MP3! I just turned it off actually. It bothers me too much to enjoy it.

While we are pointing out Mix 104.1, another thing that bothers me is that the music was all loaded into their automation system pitched at 2%. Since about 2 years ago, all the new music is loaded in NOT pitched. The end result is all of the '80s, '90s and early 2000 stuff is pitched and everything newer is not! It bothers me hearing some songs sped up and others not. 106 WCOD on the Cape did the SAME EXACT thing. To me, I have a trained ear and the pitch changes stick out like a sore thumb and bother me very much.

This is unbelievable! It's sad that such a big station in a big market these days can sound like this for more than a few minutes. They must have had some kind of catastrophic failure to be putting a product like this on the air for a few DAYS!

No. the same crappy processing that BMX has used for years was loaded back into 104.1's soundchain just minutes after the BCN/BMX flip.

I remember Mix having a lot of terrible sounding music back when they were on 98.5, especially during the old Lander show. Like another poster said, the audio during some songs sounds like a 64k MP3, but then when a personality comes on, it sounds fine.

The one audio problem I've noticed on Mix over the years is when jocks talk over records, especially during Lady D's show. It sounds like the levels are changing drastically, almost as if the jock is riding the fader too hard.

Its kinda funny, but when they first made the move, I was listening to some song and realized that the processing was indeed a little bit different at the 104.1 frequency. :D

BTW, when the initial flip happened, I did have some technical questions, but whereas both 98.5 and 104.1 moved their studios anyway, there was no real way to ask the question, but I will try to attempt this anyway.

When they made the move, did WBMX acquire WBCN's old microwave feed, or did they just move the antenna for the 98.5 feed instead? See, I said it was hard to explain. ;D

They just started feeding Mix's audio instead of WBCN. Certain that the STL's, processing gear and 104.1 transmitter plant are unchanged. I had, and lost, a recording made when they switched the processing. It was during a song by the Fray, playing using WBCN's sweet processing. Suddenly the song cut out.. a few seconds of dead air, then it came back on - louder, way more compressed, somewhat distorted. That was the switch from the WBCN "setting" on their Omnia to the WMBX "setting". Since it was a recording - i could see the waveform - went from healthy audio with lots of dynamics visible to a brick. Awful.

I was recording when that happened and have it if you are interested.

EDIT: It was actually "I'd Rather Be With You" by Joshua Radin that was played around 3:43 AM on 8/12/09 that the audio cut out for 30 seconds and came back with the "Mix" processing. The event you are describing above when it cut out during a Fray song was the following night, past midnight on 8/13/09. The processing changed once again to a very lightly processed setting, and then about an hour or so later, it switched back again during a Fray song. I also have this recorded.
