What's up at NAK?

On 94.3 this morning they were playing John Tesh (as in his radio show) and going by the liner Light 94.3. Meanwhile over on AM 730, Mike Kay was still going strong and still calling it 94.3 WNAK. Could it possibly have been some DX'ing, or something else?BTW, I like this style board much better. Easier to navigate and read.Northernman Returns

(a) Depending on where you live, what you heard was from the southwest and came in stronger than Carbondale (you are familiar with the FM capture thingy).(b) FM was temporarily down and the next strongest station took over.(c) The frequency of your antenna was in pi-R-square megahertz, rather than kilometrics divided by sine waves. Get it fixed. Now(d) "Lite 94.3" is a less-filling beer. You were looking at the label. Go to meetings.

Mack184, in the "Lost our online community" thread, says this:"I told you something was going to happen VERY soon. Did you listen to WNAK-FM this morning? They're now Lite 94.3!"The WNAK web site, www.wnakfm.com has changed, as well, but makes no reference to that. It also redirects you automatically to www.wnakam.com Note the difference.

WNAK AM and FM are not simulcasting anymore. My two radios are playing two different songs. Lite FM and Olde AM (not Oldies AM, but my kinda music AM). My car preset goes back to 730.

This is modern radio management at its finest. You take a combined AM and FM that covers about 75 miles north and south and simulcast a format that has proven to be a consistent winner, you have quality advertisers on your best day you never dreamed of having, in a radio market with "same stuff" programming, you have a format that stands alone, both of your transmitters are clean so people can pick up your signal, your message and imaging is not confusing at all, (a listener wants to hear good music, whether it be a re-make of a Cole Porter tune by the Happenings or the original standard by Sinatra, that listener knows where to find it), people are actually responding to your remotes and your every aspect of your consistent, non confusing, one stop shop radio station..................all that said, then what do they do? CHANGE IT!!! In effect, by putting on Lite 94.3FM, they are duplicating the KRZ FM lite format in the 100.3FM frequencies, toying with a format that has been successful and most importantly, cannibalizing sales, ratings, listeners and the two frequencies. And dollars to donuts, the genuis who thought this all up will be gone inside of a year and leave the wreckage for the survivors to sort through. Modern Radio Management. If they were cavemen, the wheel would've been reinvented into an isosceles triange!!!!Yonkstur

Margie had it nailed. Brought the station from 25th place to 5th. Got fired. I don't know the circumstances, but she seemed to be doing it right, unless Roger was doing it right and Margie wasn't.I really do wish Route 81 success and maybe the three AM's doing Sinatra will make it happen. (Actually, I haven't heard any Sinatra yet, but it's not been long.)EDIT: I spoke too soon. It's five minutes after I posted the above and Sinatra's on with "Fly Me To The Moon." I sit corrected.

Ok..NAK had numbers. No doubt there. But, and it's always the case with stations that have high demos, it becomes a near impossibility to sell to anyone represented by an agency. It's not necessarily right, but it is for the most part the truth. Grinding out the orders on a local retail basis is very hard work. KRZ, Froggy & Magic, aren't grinding it out on the street. They're answering the phone or the fax and putting in lots of agency orders. I think that they were faced with a need to pay their bills. No matter what someone thinks about Route 81 and it's history, I'm sure they have bankers who want their money..NOW!! So I suppose that they looked at trying to lower the demos on the FM to help boost their billing, and if they do it right, they can retain the older demos, and those clients on their AM's. I wish them well.

If WNAK-FM was as successful as some here claim, the format would have stayed the same. I'll miss that music on FM, but I didn't see WNAK's balance sheet.

I agree with Yonkstur- The move to FM was huge move, getting the signal up & down the valley. Putting the classics back to AM only is a step backwards. I live in Pittston, and once 730am goes to reduced power, I barely receive a signal. Too much interference. Could be their numbers are down somewhat. They seem to be trying to feel their way around since Terry & J Kris left. Paula has a pleasent personality, but works bests as a second banana. I thought they were messing with things when they were injecting new music into the mix, but I guess that was a test they felt worked best for them. Tesh is ok, but WNAK-FM is now just another station that doesn't stand out anymore.

On a related WNAK note, the recipe book they are promoting is going gangbusters. The places that have them are running out. THey are free and in the interest of full disclosure, I got the centerfold with my "Third Date Meal" recipe.LIstened a little bit to the FM today and Hilsted sounded good. But it's almost like they are going for the old 1988 Joe Frank/WBAX/WYOS split format. Contemporary lite on the FM, standards like Ella Fitzgerald and Sinatra on the AM. Roger Heydt did afternoon drive on AM today. Good music mix but it would've been better to hear the standards on FM.Yonkstur

Just another reason that Sat. Radio is booming. Next time your walking through a populated parking lot take a good look around at the cars, you can see it.
