What's Up At STAR?

Anyone notice a change at STAR since KLSY switched to KQMV? I am hearing stuff like the new Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gnarlz Barkley, Keane, Cold Play mixed in with Rob Thomas, Sheryl Crow and 80's. Seems an odd mix that leans AAA. My guess is they are running away from KQMV, who will kick their asses on the pop female side, so they shift a bit toward THE MOUNTAIN or THE END, a couple of loser stations. To be honest STAR is old and worn out. They are trapped inbetween two true variety stations in JACK and MOVIN. Their format is dead and as this board points out the airstaff is ready for retirement, especially the PD. Marcus D at KBKS will rip into STAR and KUBE, plus pick up the KLSY old listeners. KQMV and JACK will battle for the 25-54 females. STAR is putting new paint on an old house and it ain't gonna work this time. That station's nine lives may have just run out. Their PD Phillips can join Preston and Gary Nolan in Oldies or consulting. Change is comin.

You know - if I had a dollar for every time some newbie comes on here and says "Star is changing" - I wouldn't have to work.Star is ADJUSTING. Star is NOT CHANGING. Period. Haven't you figured that out already?

KPLZ is an OLD HIPPIE

"It's an OOOOOLD HIP-PIE..and it don't know what to do.....should it hang on to the old?..should it grab on to the new?"=======================-Bellemy Bros

Star is now positioned to easily own women 25-34 0r even 25-49. Movin' is going to come on with an initial impact if their marketing campaign is noticed, but like other Jack stations, this new Black Jack will quickly fizzle. It is just too wide of a format. In typical Sandusky style, the library has not been tested to Seattle audiences...King Mark has appointed a mediocre (at best) mid-day jock/music director with no experience programming in a major market. This allows him to call all the shots, as he enjoys doing (ask KRWM PD Gary Nolan who just announced his resignation). Look for Star's number to easily double now that KLSY is out of the picture, and Movin' will change formats again in less than 24 months. Hot AC is still very profitable in other markets where there is only one station in the format.

I don't agree with you... why would STAR's numbers go up with KLSY gone? Is STAR going to take the small amount of listeners KLSY had? Putting KLSY's old #'s as MIX and STAR's numbers together the station still looks like crap. You're correct that other HOT A/C's do well in other markets, could it be that Seattle just isn't a HOT A/C town? KLSY and STAR both sucked in ratings! And on the new PD @ MOViN, look @ KLSY's #'s after Bill West left, in the short time she was under control of MIX the numbers shot up after Bill was let go... Could it be you're bitter because you were kicked off and didn't get the PD gig?

It is unlikely that all of KLSY's numbers would go to KPLZ, but if they did the resulting station would have a 5 share 25-54 (on a four book) making it third in the market and an 8 share 25-54 women making it first. This speculation is dumb. STAR does fine in women and may pick up some strength from KLSY leaving. My bet is STAR continues to be near the top in women, but may grow slightly. KLSY had a couple of shares 25-54 women and KPLZ hovers around a five share. Combined it would be number one, but I bet KPLZ picks up a half a share at best.MOVIN will undoubtedly do better that KLSY, but the question is how much better and for how long? Four-book averages tell the story!

At least know what you're talking about if you are going to bash a person, a station or a company. Sandusky has completed a minimum of two music tests for each of its Seattle FMs in each of the last few years. Pinnacle has been doing the testing for Warm and Mix and Broadcast Architecture has been doing it for KWJZ. That's a heck of a stronger commitment to local music testing than any of the other groups in Seattle--especially CBS, but also Entercom and Clear Channel--have made to their stations in recent years.

Oops. That's what you call a Smackdown right there, folks.
