What's Up w/ WZNN?

D

I tuned in this morning and they were running, not the local morning show, but Fox Sports Radio. Just now at the top of the hour, where they normally do CNN Radio News, they did a TOH ID with a different V/O guy and not even a reference to "Supertalk", just "1350 WZNN" and then they resumed FSR's feed.

What on earth is happening over there?
______________

How come no one in Asheville does MOR...like Westwood One's Adult Standards format? When WISE was airing the ABC Stardust format..which to me isn't as good as WWOne, they pulled some good numbers and were grossing north of $600,000 a year. Lots of retired folks in Asheville area plus even younger folks there have a greater appreciate for "good" music than other places.

Radioland,
There is more to the story about WZNN than what Ken put on his website,
but I am NOT going to put out any sour grapes. I'll just say that
HRN Broadcasting treated me fairly and with respect at all times.
I realize this is a business. We all know that sometimes decisions
need to be made, this is radio, nuff said.
Although I don't agree with the choice, I respect it.
Look for me to show up in a radio near you soon and I wish all the best
to Ken Bagwell and 1350.
On with the spin, see you on the radio,

Re: WZNN Flips to Fox Sports

I know it's easy to "arm-chair quarterback" progamming decisions for those whose pocketbook it's NOT affecting, but it seems like stations like WZNN have the potential, put forth lots of effort, yet they seem to not give the format a chance. Is this just me? In looking through the WZNN-related posts on this board, SuperTalk 1350 debuted around September, 2004--the format was given less than 18 months. That just doesn't seem long enough--to me. And since I don't pull the purse strings, it's easy for me to say. And, while the 10kw day signal has been a tremendous improvement to this station, the flickering night signal probably contributed to the demise of SuperTalk 1350--however, changing the format isn't going to change the night signal, either. So, I think they should've stuck it out a bit longer.

Thank you. That said it all.

I will second that...but with an upgrade to a modern easy format like WDUV in Tampa, The River in Grand Rapids or Classy 92.1 West Palm Beach (all are streaming). The traditional Stardust format is way too old when you could go soft AC and bring in females in the 50 plus range. Stardust tries to mix tradiitional MOR with AC. But, done right it would certainly outperform even what WISE did and find a real niche in the market.

booger!

I agree...not enough time was given or especially the vital promotion needed to create awareness of the format and station!!!!! I don't the believe the nightime issue is really a factor when it comes to AM...unless you're covering live games.

Re: WZNN Flips to Fox Sports

This is a much better idea!!!!

You switch the station to Classic Country...complete with national and local news. A hour Swap and Shop on Saturday morning (like KMOX in St Louis) and even some bluegrass programs on the weekend. In other words a complete full service station for Asheville!

You know...like the one Cheap Channel completely screwed up....WWNC!!!!!!!

I'm telling ya with the right people, promotion and programming...it would definitely get some attention in Asheville. Certainly a lot more than another News or Sports station on AM. That's exactly what we don't need more of!!!!!

booger!

Precisely. With most live sports airing when the signal is at its weakest, I personally believe HRN is shooting itself in the foot with this sports format.
______________

First you have to have a foot to shoot. This is what happens when you have a small potatoes owner try to compete with the big guys with nothing more than an aggressive attitude and empty promises. Throw this one on the growing pile of, "we could have taken down the big guys if only..."

In addition to a lousy nighttime pattern, their affiliation with the WCU Catamounts isn't exactly going to bring in the bucks.

Wow, looks like I'm not the only one in radio that thinks this was a
bad idea. I'll see all of you in the anger management class tonight.
And on the radio in Charlotte, from #161 to #37.
Damn I'm gonna miss being at that station.

Curious about your "we could have teken down the big boys" line. What makes you think they want to take on the big boys? Not everyones goal in life is to take on Crap Channel. Maybe the "small potatoes owner" is tring to do something different than spew the same crap out about who is wrong or right. Sports is non-offensive, (for the most part)and Asheville is offended no matter which side you take. Like it, don't like it, the fact is WZNN is now Fox Sports. You can either wish it success or wish it failure, but I assure you the man that holds the license does not lose sleep over your opinion of him.

My checks come from local radio, my entertainment comes from satellite (XM).

PS. If any of the "armcahair GM's,PD's" have a cool million laying around, call HRN maybe they'll entertain your offer to buy. Then you can spew any crap you want out over Asheville during the day.

The grass is always DEAD on the other side.

Re: WZNN Flips to Fox Sports

Hey Mediatech,
How come you didn't make it to the Someone-peed-in-my-wheaties
group meeting last night? We really missed you. And yes, panties
are still fully crammed, thanks for asking.
Just for the record the grass in NOT always dead on the other
sied if it's FERTILIZED!
Your turn for a cliche'
And we both know your entertainment comes from Playboy and cheese doodles.
