What's up with 87.7?

I'm hearing Spanish language music on the old Channel 6 audio channel, it comes in loud and clear here in Ft. Lauderdale. Is this a pirate station or something legitimate?

I think its legit, guys. Almavision had a CP to move a low-powered TV station to channel 6. Since LP stations are exempt from broadcasting in digital at the moment, 87.7 is probably the audio portion of channel 6.

I have heard somewhere that many stations (WNYZ New York and WDCN Washington) use the audio portion of the signal as a commercial broadcast, while the video portion is a studio cam or a test pattern. I'd imagine the same is true in Miami. This channel 6 CP is covering about as well as a class A FM signal, so things could get interesting.

If the channel 6 protection laws still stand as they did before the switchover that's going to make life difficult for any NCE looking to increase their ERP or HAAT.

Isnt there a rule that low power sill has anoher year before they have to stop?

- The station in question is WEYS-LP, Miami. It was originally a translator on channel 56 in the Keys. It is in fact a legitimate station.
- The FCC has not yet set a date for the end of analog LPTV.
- I don't think low-power stations like WEYS are protected from 88-92 FM. Regulation 73.525 (which provides this protection) says

(1) An affected TV Channel 6 station is a TV broadcast station which is authorized to operate on channel 6 that is located within the following distances of a NCE-FM station operating on Channels 201-220:...

Emphasis mine. Regulation 73.601, for full-power TV stations, reads

...TV broadcast, low power TV, and TV translator stations are assigned channels 6MHz wide, designated as set forth in 73.603(a).

again emphasis mine. I would read that as indicating LPTV stations are not considered "TV broadcast stations" and thus are not protected by 73.525.

- All analog TV stations operating on channel 6 can be heard on FM radios. (provided those radios tune down to 87.75MHz) However, the modulation standard for TV is 1/3 that for FM -- this means that either:
- WEYS is operating with TV standard modulation. It will sound fine on a TV set but will be only 33% modulated (pretty soft!) on a FM radio.
- WEYS is operating with FM standard modulation. It will sound fine on a FM radio but will be 300% modulated (and probably fairly distorted) on a TV set.

The regulation limiting the modulation of a TV station is not incorporated by reference into the regulations for LPTV stations. Neither is the regulation limiting the aural power of a TV station to 22% of visual power. WEYS is authorized 3kw visual power, and the same limit applies to the aural.

Almavision operates both a radio and a TV network, I don't know which one WEYS is carrying.

Was coming on here to start a thread on this very subject but you guys are good...Beat me to it....

Just heard it this week while driving through the Pines on my car radio...They seem to be modulating the audio like a regular FM station...A check on an old analog TV of Channel 6 reveals they are running the video portion of their Almavision Network (which is what they had audio//video when they were on Channel 56), but the audio is not in sync with the video. Audio seems to be a full fledged local Spanish Christian FM station, which was promoting an event at SW Dade's Alpha & Omega church today (Saturday 9/19).

Full power stations have priority over low power stations.

I have not heard whether these 87.7 stations are on 87.75 with 25KHz deviation and the TV pre-emphasis curves or manage to use the standards of the FM broadcast band including stereo and SCAs.
