What's up with Atlanta Radio

Hey all,

Just recently moved to the area from Cincinnati and I have to ask, what is up with the Atlanta radio scene?

I figured coming from a mid-sized city like Cincinnati with WLW as the only station worth remembering, I would be in for a big surprise here. I was wrong: I am just not impressed. I will listen to anything, with my favorites being local talk radio and country.

I like 101.5. In my opinion good personalites and decent playlists. I pick up a Carollton country station out here in Winston, it is good, but I don't listen to it much since I can't pick it up on my daily drive to the airport.

GST! Geez. I have seen many posts about the station. Some people have said they are/were trying to emulate WLW. If that is the case, they need to do a lot better. I don't know what the deal is with the station. Perhaps, I am just not used to it and miss my WLW personalities, but I think they could do better. The Kimmer, though somewhat entertaining and worth listening too always does stupid little laugh line bits. Some of the phone calls are good but I wish there was more of that. Just need more local call in shows about local issues (or even national issues on a local level).

Other stations I have heard. B98.5? I think that is the staion, but I have never heard so much Elton John and Boston in my life. Same song, once on the way to work, once on the way home from work for the past 4 months! There is so much music out there. PLAY IT!

Just my two cents. Stictly my opinion, but had to get it out there. It is just me or do others feel the way I do. Any suggestions for good local talk radio?

Thanks much!
Dave

Welcome to Atlanta

Welcome to town Dave!

Ditto to virtually everything you posted!

We need some local talents that stick with you after their shows are over.

Kimmer is sort of an institution after all these years and reallly the only talent worth listening to at GST. I have heard a rumor about him going over to WSB which could really use a local show to shake hands with Atlantans. We'll see.

GST meanwhile will continue to accept the mediocre standing that has has now become their trademark unfortunately.

Sports radio is really no better although 2 Live Stews seems to be the flavor of the month lately.

Atlanta radio is pretty bad.

Sad but true.

It's not just Atlanta, but a lot of markets nationwide. Like it or not, radio in general has become a laughingstock. The main problem is not many people are laughing, more like complaining, just like Dave. Or if there is some laughing, it's probably directed towards the "fat-cats" at conglomerates like Clear Channel, Cox, Infinity, etc. Unfortunately, it's all about the money, and not about what the average person wants to hear.

Have you listened to WSB-AM yet? That's sort of our heritage station.

Local talk radio stinks here. I think Hannity put a curse on WGST when they didn't pick him up after leaving to be syndicated. I'm hoping XM uses that little 10 Mhz of band over our heads they've acquired to give us some better local content.

Re: Welcome to Atlanta

GST, a Clear Channel station like WLW, is indeed a WLW wannabe. With a lousy signal and bad programming, it will never get there. WSB-AM is closer to what WLW does. FM here is a vast wasteland. You can still hear WLW at night and in the winter, sometimes for most of the day. Maybe that, along with the WLW internet stream, is your best bet.

Radio doesn't exist in a vacuum, and in my opinion Atlanta radio stinks because the expectations of the locals is so low. Our local governments are so bad we aren't too surprised when elected officials are murdered, and we're taxed for a multi billion dollar sewer system that wasn't even approved by real design engineers. We are treated like crap, and we take it. Why should we expect anything more from a radio station?

Yes---a "rumor" that you made up, post here repeatedly, and NOBODY believes.

But I love ya jeffco---nice to see you've taken a short break from fellating Dino Costa on the Denver board to come back to the ATL entertain us with your wisdom.

Re: Welcome to Atlanta

>Its amazing that most of ATLANTA has the same thing to say I would. I think that clear channel wasted a ton of cash on WGST. What a joke of a radio station!
The signal is the worst, and better yet, when they were on am 920 they sounded a lot better. Kimmer is boring now. Even the bits, Newsmaker lines are boring now. Its like the same old routine over and over and over. I like the sounds of stations like WRFG, Now thats original radio.... For Real........

Re: Welcome to Atlanta

>Ha ha...funny you should say that about GST's signal.....if I am working a 6a.m. shift, I leave the house at 5 and can pick up a better signal from WLW and listen to the Cincinnati news better than I can the Atlanta news on GST!

Re: Welcome to Atlanta

Well, I am glad I am not the only one that feels the way I do about the Atlanta radio line up.

You know, GST is a Clear Channel station, so why don't they go all out and copy WLW to a tee? (They already got the same voice guy and some of the same news jingles. ) That may not be possible though. I am 27 and WLW is still running with most of the same personalities that have had since I was 7!

WLW has: A halfway decent local morning show (most of interviews seem pre-recorded to me and Jim Scott is too fake..). Midmornings with Mike McConnell (I've heard him on "The Weekend" here..not as good as the local show)...local/national issues. Early afternoons with Bill Cunningham (who is a bit full of himself, but entertaining), an AWESOME LOCAL sports talk show in the evenings and a semi-controversial 9-midnight LOCAL show. I mean, geez, with the Atlanta population, the listeners have to be there!

Let's revolt for the local shows!!

I like WSB though. I just started listening to it.

Take Care all,
dave
