What's up with Bill Handel?

Like all talk stations EXCEPT KFI, where the spot rates are higher than most of the other stations in the cluster.
Not really. Because the station skews so old, it does not get on programatic buys unless the rate is placed lower. And it depends a lot more on local direct than on agency accounts, so the rates are limited there as well.

KBIG, KIIS and KOST all outbill KFI. KRRL and KYSR are more niche formats, so do not do quite as well although KYSR likely will overtake KFI as well by next year.

a radio board that has a stated policy of keeping the discussion on radio topics,
A lot of programmers on here so maybe you can relate - what's that thing we all worry about? Putting something on the air that causes people to tune out? EVERY SINGLE TIME this board is allowed to drift into "left vs right", "conservative vs liberal", that is MY tune out factor. I come here for the RADIO DISCUSSIONS, not noise from the political peanut gallery. I expected better from the moderators. Oh well.

The biggest subject of discussion on radio today is the pandemic. Urban, country, CHR and Hispanic morning shows talk about it. News shows and talk shows talk all the time about it. Even sports stations are constantly discussing the effect on games, players, attendance. And TV news and talk shows are nearly non-stop pandemic talk, unless they are dealing with Cuomo's touchy-feely activities.

Oh, yes, and as a break some TV talk shows featured a feral cat that got onto the outfield at the NY-Baltimore game. Then, back to the pandemic.

But that is not the subject of this thread! So, as the moderator here - PLEASE, I beg you... explain to me what the actual hell that has to do with the REAL subject of this thread "What's up with Bill Handel"? This thread has veered so far off the rails it is hideous - and you David are not doing anything about it other than making it worse. Just one crazy guy's opinion. How about keeping things "on topic"? Isn't that what moderators are supposed to do? Let's ask Mr. Berry.

Threads here veer into new areas quite spontaneously. Generally, we let them run their course. If they go into areas that are separate subjects... such as talking about Seattle in the Boston group, we may move the thread or the appropriate part.

In any case, if you want my opinion, I think that the discussion of the Handel show is about talk radio, and we are still on that subject.

Of course, like all things in life, each of the moderators will occasionally have differentiating opinions on topicality. So, if Frank concurs with you... he can create a new topic. In the meantime, I'm not terribly distress by the "sidebar" posts on the Handel thread.

How mistaken you are: I am a registered independent, but was a Republican until Trump; the Republican affiliation came from my decades of participation with the New Progressive Party in Puerto Rico (which is the pro-statehood party).

My friends, of course, say I am somewhat to the right of Attila the Hun.

There are many who are actually socially progressive yet are fiscally conservative. Painting everyone pure blue or red is a deceptive and inaccurate procedure.

But I totally disagree with the "free to spread the virus and kill others" attitudes of the governors of Texas and Florida. I believe thoroughly in the concept that my freedoms can not impair the freedoms of others. So I find the attitudes of Ocasio-Cortéz as repugnant as those of Ted Cruz.

And... as far as this board goes, subjects that are among the principal topics of everyone from the Rush wannabees to Charlemagne Da God and from Fox to CNN are viable topics (even if political), just as comparing Alt rock with traditional progressive rock.
YOU ROCK, DAVID!!!

KSL has been coasting a bit, though. Its sounders are the same ones they'd been playing when I moved out of Utah back in 2018.

KFI is more fresh with clever stuff for the VO guy to say. Sassier. KSL is more newsy with its sounders, e.g. "Major February winter storm — live coverage starts..... NOW." Promos are pretty straightforward and plain.

Sidenote: I once interviewed for a job with KSL's PD. Didn't get it. But when I made a KFI comparison, he gleefully started talking about how "KFI has the best newswriting in the country," etc. Clearly a fan. A lot of the news staff over the years have been KFI alum (Michael Castner, Brian Martin, etc.) KSL would probably be sassier like KFI, except Salt Lake City is a pretty uptight market.
Unless you are a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, you might have a better chance being hit by a comet from a clear blue sky than get a job there. Of course, this is not official written policy, but more or less a "wink-wink-wink" policy.

I really love the sound of KSL-AM.... Even the start of the chat shows on that station are sharp and crisp. Some of the KFI show opens unncessarily run 45-60 seconds....all wasted time. I would reduce the commercial load somewhat and increase spot prices a hair just to get rid of the aural clutter. Too long opens are too much opportunity to make listeners start to turn elsewhere or an opportunity to fire up a streaming mp3 device.

Except for the executive producer I interned for (at KSL 1160). Or the PD. Or about half the TV staff.

"Church" businesses (direct line) like BYU are nearly 100% active LDS working there. But non-direct-line stuff which actually makes money (DMBA, Bonneville, etc.) are more interested in hiring people who actually perform. You'll get hired easily at the bottom as an LDS member, but never climb. Or you can be a superstar and get hired in from another market, and actually get paid. It's a weird (but not toxic) office environment.

Speaking of Bill Handel, it sounds like everyone on KFI is on vacation or out sick except for Tim Conway Jr. and company. John and Ken are gone this week, Gary and Shannon are on vacation (but are suppose to return tomorrow) and Bill Handel is out sick. I know it’s the summer time, but the revolving door of guest hosts is getting nauseating. They are even having to bring back some old KOGO San Diego and KFYI Phoenix personalities like Chris Merrill to fill in (who I am pretty sure is still doing the show from Phoenix since I last heard him doing Election Day 2020 coverage on KTAR-FM).

John was out, but I heard Ken going solo on Monday (well with a lot of anchor Debra Mark).

Gotcha. I did hear Ken say yesterday at the end of his show that he was going to be gone the rest of the week too along with John. So KFI probably tried to coincide John and Ken both being gone at the same time with the return of Gary and Shannon today.

I have deleted a number of partisan political posts from this thread.
Damn.. Nurse Jeff and I were about to pour several yards of concrete down this rabbit hole. At least you saved us the trip!

The B team at work on 6~Forty, but so what. Radio listening is quite different during the summer months, and by Labor Day weekend all should be back to more stimulating talk. Here's hoping Handel is back in the saddle of AMD, too!

Why dont they just put on replays of classic shows when all these people are out. Theyd probably get more listeners then the actual live shows.

They stay timely. It's today's current events.

Fun aside (I wish I'd gotten the entire exchange recorded, but this is the portion which made it on the podcast): About ten years ago, Conway walks into J&K to do crosstalk for his 7 o'clock (back when J&K ran until 7). And he read Friday's promo live, on a Monday. Including one about "I think Tim Tebow will beat the stealers come Sunday."

Ken thought it was a bit and started awkwardly laughing. Conway, hilariously humiliated, blurts out, "THIS IS FRIDAY'S PROMO! MAAAAAAAAN!" And then walks out, slamming the door of the studio.

John replied: "So.... did that just happen?"

For those wondering, KFI is doing just fine and remains the #1 news/talk station in the country with 1.2 million weekly cume according to Nielsen, the only News/Talk station that reaches at least a million listeners. Not too bad. #2 is WSB in Atlanta with 856,600 weekly cume.
