What's up with KISS-SA?

anthonydt06 said:
Maybe the lack of an updated playlist. KISS has been pretty stale the last few years regarding adds.

and they have the 90s in heavy rotation. In the last 2 weeks traveling from Austin to San Antonio in New Braunfels I heard "The Youth Of a Nation" so 2001.

Not too long ago I heard "Blue Monday" by Orgy on 99.5 KISS. Also 97.7 plays the same exact songs as KISS but with no DJ chatter.

Maybe KSMG will flip to KONO's Music under a new moniker San Antonio's Greatest Hits Magic 105.3, KISS will be Rock 101 KISS, X1067 will remain for now, and 99.5 will go Dance as Mega 99.5 KMGS, or it could be 99.5 KSMG Mega 99.5, Rock 101 KISS, and KONO 105.3. or KSMG Mega 99.5, KONO stays put because of the AM simulcast, and 105.3 KISS.

Yet another possibility all other stations stay the same except KISS moves to 105.3, and KSMG becomes Magic 99.5 KSMG San Antonio's best variety of Hits and Oldies as a Urban AC format.

I also think something is going to go down at Cox Radio SA.

I think it is crazy to see the numbers at KISS so low. Look for a tweak coming real soon. I mentioned this to a friend of mine but I think Cox will hang onto the station rather than jump ship like they have been known to do because of the former success of KISS in SA. If things don't improve from there.... who knows? **shrugs**

Anyone knows how KISS is selling?

i think the problem is the lack of compelling new product and the aging of the head-banger audience. Hip-hop/Rap may be going through the same thing... how many more ways can you say the same thing musically? Country went through a couple of similar cycles, and each time a new crop of 'New Traditionals' or 'Hat Acts' or 'Hot Chicks' came along. Oddly enough, polka never has this problem. It just keeps rolling out the barrel.
If I was in charge of KISS, I'd go back to the '70s and play all that Budgie, April Wine, Triumph, Judas Priest, Ozzy and Captain Copter & the Whirlybirds. Lou Roney knows where the bones are buried. The kids coming up now haven't heard it yet, and unless someone tells them their parents listened to it, they'll think its new and different.

I would definitely like to see either 99.5 or 105.3 go Top 40/Dance. Preferably, move Magic's format to 99.5 and Top 40/Dance on 105.3 to catch some of the Austin market. Anyone ever heard of XHTO in El Paso? Very cool playlist.

99.5 KISS needs to update their playlist. KISS from 1999-2002 (or thereabouts) had a good balance of current and older music and they had a solid presentation. KISS started phasing out the Aerosmith, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC (they will play a couple of tunes from AC/DC still) around that time. They also tightened their playlist to the point where Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, and Red Hot Chili Peppers are almost always playing. KISS has a tremendous legacy dating back to the days of Lou Roney and the late Joe Anthony. The current jocks are good, but the playlist as Anothydt06 correctly stated is stale and needs an overhaul.

i laugh every time i read this board. if a station isn't top 40 dance or alternative it is terrible. nobody on here talks about how kono is kicking everybodys but in the market. meanwhile yall love ktfm and theyre 15th. nice observations. san antonio and austin need a dance station about as much as i need a hole in the head.

I would have to disagree my friend.

I helped launch that station. That entire market is.... hmmmm what word am I trying to use here? CRAZY!

Dance and house are huuuuuuuge in that town and it carrys over onto the radio stations both HitFm and also CC's Power 102. Power 102 is a station that says #1 For Hip Hop then goes into a dance song. (BTW dance/house is played only on mix shows or at night on weekends)

As for HitFM... they rely on music research. Very SLOOOOOW research at that. I remember we used to tell the PD to add certain songs and he would not make a move without it being researched. He even refrained from adding certain songs he did not like.

That is why I wouldn't suggest flipping KONO's format maybe the frequency. An Urban AC format would do good on 99.5 because of 98.5, and KSJL 810 lost their LMA in 2008. Urban AC doesn't have Alternative, rock, or too many dance songs for that matter. San Antonio has a huge African American population and Hip Hop is not all they listen too, however the radio station owners think otherwise. They are some formats such as X1067 that belong in a Austin, Texas or the Hot AC version of KTFM that belongs in the midwest. KSJL did well when they were on 96.1 not when they were on 92.5 or 810 for that matter. I am no total fan of Urban AC as it gets too soft for me, but I know that would be worth a shot if Cox cares about ratings.

What demo are you looking at? Because my understanding is KTFM is doing well in 18-34 and 18-49.

The Powers at Cox do not like to break music nor formats.

The Powers at Cox like to keep it simple and not take risks.

Only with Flankers not Cash Cow stations.

Most folks I know in Radio hate Magic...but the 25-54 numbers are always healthy at least every other book, so no changes...

I would venture to say the same will be true with KISS heritage calls and all. Look for changes more in airstaff and music tweaking not formats!

The station I don't get is KQ...what a dog. YUCK and I get the format. Boring and resting on Christmas music station numbers...I guess.

a friend of mine does sales at magic and says ktfm is in 9th or 10th 18-34. i dont no about 18-49. if u consider that doing well................ok.

Good solid simple programming teamed with compelling marketing and promotions will always win in south texas. Understanding the market is also helpful.

Making something simple complex will always set you back.

I'm always amazed at some of the silly ideas I see on this board...

I think your "friend" is telling you what you wanna hear but let me break down for you just a bit-

In 25-34, KTFM is within 400 AQH persons of The Beat.

KTFM has doubled (25-34) from 900 AQH to 1800 AQH since February.

Overall, KTFM cume continues to grow across the board. Remember KTFM format didn't go full Top 40 Rhythmic until late March/early April. The Beat & Mix know that KTFM is making progress and the numbers are there to back it up.

25-34? are you searching for a magic pearl with that tiny demographic?

Im not sure that Ive ever heard that demo used in a "were doing great in the ratings"

"in persons 18-21 that only listen on tuesdays, were doing great!"

I never said "great"...I said well. And besides, KTFM has only been doing this format for a short time span. Give KTFM time to grow and get the word out as it continues to evolve. Hell, it has only been 3 wks since Stick and the weekend line up changed.

the weekend line up change will affect almost nothing.

just stick with the "we just started". and stay away from the "we're doing great people ages 24-25".

Until you get a morning show, you will be in the same boat. lost in the ocean.
