What's up with KTFM?

KTKX is down too. I guess they're just having trouble with the transmitter... Are the two stations on the same tower?

Looks like it...

I was wondering why all of a sudden 106.7's signal became weaker on the Northside of town by the Airport. They must have moved towers after the beginning of Power 106.7 in 2006.

I just used Radio-Locator.com real fast.  Was at work and didn't feel like looking through the FCC's page.  Radio-Locator looks to be off only by yards though :p

When did KTKX move from the Tower of the Americas? I remember when KTFM 102.7 FM ran spots that mentioned, 'broadcasting from the Tower of the Amriecas' or something like that, way back in the late 70s or 80s. Does any one still use the Hemisfair Tower anymore?

Are you sure it wasn't KQXT? Didn't then KSJL 96.1 broadcast there since there office was downtown? KTFM had it's own antenna farm when it was on 102.7, and so did 550.

My apologies. When I glanced at your map I thought I saw Eisenhauer Rd. It said Englehart Rd.

Sorry, but KTXK wasn't on the Tower, nor were its previous incarnations. Starting out on 106.3 (as KTUF) in 1979, within a few years it switched to 106.7 with an upgrade to 100,000 watts at their present location.

Yes, they do. KQXT, KJXK and KZEP are there.

You can say all you want about how big your coverage area is, but nothing beats having your transmitter in the middle of where the people are.

That explains when riding the VIA bus listening to a analog walkman radio 102.7 is overpowered when trying to listen to 106.7. I remember riding the bus home from Downtown and the signal would bleed out 106.7 until I got past Broadway and the 35/281 split when they were 106.7Jamz and I could continuously hear both KTFM and KZEP. Then KTFM must have been using 2 towers or their antenna farm on Eishenhauer Rd was just for KTSA.

Are there any other downtown office buildings being used to broadcast any other radio stations? I think that back in the mid 70s, 97 fm (KEEZ?), used to broadcast from the Tower Life building. Last year, the TLB got a new single spire, flagpole type antenna (?), or just a flagpole. Is it used by anyone besides those pesky cellphone carriers?

FM's don't use towers to radiate, they use an antenna mounted on a mast, pole, post or tower to radiate. Typically, they look like to to 10 roto-tiller blades spaced several feet apart. There are some single bay operations, and some with more than 10 but the bulk of stations are in the 4, 6 or 8 category.

A tower is only used to put the antenna (consisting of the bays described above) high up in the air and to hold the transmission line that feeds them. In early FM, many were mounted on an AM tower, but those did not give much coverage due to low height and poor location.

As time went on, FMs built tall towers or went on TV towers (Senior Road in Houston). Or they went to the top of mountains or hills (Cedar Hill area in Dallas) for the added height.

FMs like height. AMs like low, marshy land or salt flats if available. FMs like to be close to the center of population or overlooking it. AMs often are, if directionl, to one side of a market, shooting back in at it.
