What's up with local jocks?

I was recently been involved in several American Cancer Soicety Relays for Life here in the Valley and found none of the local radio station personalities involved. The most local station involvment was B-104 had sent a couple of interns with a Bose radio and some bumper stickers to the Allentown relay. Yet up in Central PA several of the stations sent out personalities to the Relays. Many of the stations have the same parent companies so, is it that local jocks in the Lehigh Valley won't do these events because they're not getting paid? ???

you'll notice not many in the Lehigh Valley will go above and beyond to promote their station. It's a stale market. Accept and move on.

After years of over involvement in local charity events, most stations have backed off these things. Jocks can get involved on their own if they want to but for the station to become entwined, MONEY has to make a transfer at some point. A GM doesn't want to use station resources (jox, van, sound system etc.) unless there is a financial payoff somewhere down the line. I'm sure the promotions people have been reigned in, too. I was at Mayfair and saw ONE LV station represented: B104. WFMZ TV had a van and a booth as well. Musikfest will be the next test. How many unpaid personell can these stations get to "volunteer" to spend hours working at this event? Most states have laws prohibiting employers from requiring employees to work overtime or on weekends without compensation. A lot of factors play a part of the answer to the question, "What's up with local jocks"?

sad.......very sad.........the town fills out the diaries........the air talent should be at these things....and the GM'S should be ashamed of themselves for not working with the charities (assuming you're correct)

I can't speak for the Lehigh Valley, but I can speak for our radio station in Reading, Y102. We are at MANY charity events in a year's time. All of our airstaff walked at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life at First Energy Stadium in Reading. One of our morning show hosts, Jackie, was involved with the Kiss-A-Pig contest to benefit Olivet Boys & Girls Clubs. I have emceed Bowl for Kids Sake for Big Brothers and Sisters amongst others. We have done things recently for Make-A-Wish foundation and the Greater Berks Food Bank. In 2005, our station along with local GM dealers collected and loaded 7 truckfuls of food, clothing and supplies for the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. And yes, we the jocks and our PD and GM were the ones loading the trucks! Did we get paid or was there money involved for the station at any of the events I mentioned? Not one dime went to the station and none of us jocks were paid for these events. We do these events to give back to the Community that has made us a part of their lives for so long. I'm not tooting the Y102 horn, I'm just showing that there ARE stations that do charity work in the community and aren't just interested in making money....

i listen to WRFY frequently, and i do notice that they are remote at charity events and also have info on the site...WFKB is also doing this sort of thing, as soon as jocks start on air (other than Randi Ellis who is already in promo's)
BTW chuck....love Flash Back Saturday Night!

Reading has always been a great market for jock participation and jocks caring for the market....dating all the way back to the time when WRAW was a top 40 station.......and jack gounder did mornings at WEEU.....
whey to go Y 102.......(always loved the pagoda)

Thanks FrankB-town...sorry it took so long to reply. Been a busy week with all the flooding. Call in some Saturday night for a request!

From what i'm reading I guess what my sister-in-law says is true. That the NYC attitude is seeping into the Valley...I've got mine so everyone will just have to catch up. Although I have to give props to Chuck Morgan of WMUH, he is already a community volunteer at a college radio station & he still volunteers his time, equipment and personal music library to both Easton and Whitehall realys. I know that he got to the Easton relay at 10:30 am to set up on Friday and didn't leave until 4p on Saturday. I don't think he slept all night.

Maybe the jocks are too busy with their 2nd jobs (so they can put food on the table and pay their rent) to have time to put in more unpaid hours? Most of them worked long and hard for free before they even started getting grossly underpaid for their services. The "NYC attitude"? I noticed it in full force in the weeks and months after 9/11 when people volunteered in droves to clean up after the towers fell...many have died from lung disease since.

Everyone......do your part, for your community, we really hate to promote the fact "we are family" here at Y-102, but as I am sure you can hear, it's true.
We are not looking for a boost in our paycheck, nor do we care if people commend us for what we do, but we get our bonus from watching the joy in a child or parents eyes when we do our part with raising money for the Make-a-wish foundation, the Luekima and lymphoma foundation...(for crying out loud, do you think I was paid to run a half marathon?) The olivet boys and girls club...(70 hours of my time) aside from raising my own two children. The American Cancer Society, and many many others. Chuck Corbin, Nick Harris, Scott. St. John, Al Burke, Suzi Summer all do their share for the community in which we live. Our listeners are well aware of us, because their "family" will be there every time they turn on the radio. The ratings said it all, and we remain doing what we do best, and that is serving everyone who wakes up with us, and ends their day with us.

thats true im most cases, but some DJ's think "the Sh*t pay isnt worth doing anything for the community". some dont realize that the fact that they are there makes a difference for some people.

Actually, I think you're misinformed. WLEV was involved with Whitehall's relay for the past 2 years. Morning show personalities did live broadcasts...and it was for free. They've also sent people over to numerous other community events, for example, walkathons for the March of Dimes, the Walk to D'feat ALS, etc. WCTO is very involved in St. Jude's Childrens' Research Hospital. I think the issue is there are so many activities, so many great, charitable causes that it is impossible to send representation out to everything. You do have to give people a day off every once in a while.

Gee, I just met Kelly Travis last night at Musikfest and certainly would have remember her if I'd had seen her at Whitehall Relay for life. Didn't recognize Dave Russell at Musikfest either from up there. But if you say they were there I believe you. They certainly didn't come over to the entertainment tent to let thier presence be know cause I'm sure Chuck would'nt have I'd a problem turn his system over to them for little while if they wanted to spin for awhile.

The other issue I forgot to mention is that I believe the ACS partnered with the Hawk this year, is that true? Because that would be the other factor that would prevent other stations from participating/claiming ownership. WLEV did not go to this year's Relay in Whitehall, I believe there were other scheduling conflicts...but I can tell you first hand that Kelly Travis was there last year and the year before. ;) And she did make several announcements...and talked to Relay people live on the air.

If ACS partnered with the Sqawk, they never showed up. Not even at Easton, where one would think being the hometown station would be most important. The only major station that I saw invovled was B-104 at Alllentown and they just sent out interns.
