What's Up With Miss 103 and Porn?

Ahhh, I like country music. I generally like country music listeners. And I especially like the family values associated with their salt of the earth lifestyle. So imagine my surprise when after a long hiatus I turned on WMSI and discovered that they actually run adds on Miss 103 for porn- and specifically talk in the spots about what we used to refer to as "Training Films." No one has ever accused me of being a prude but that is just too much. You can dress it up, give it a cute name, say it's "Romantic" but it is still porn. It says a lot about whats going on in the heads of management and sales types so busy chasing dollars that they don't even stop to think that advertising a porn distributor is wrong-especially for the country audience. Apparantly the decision makers over there don't understand that porn is not an everyday part of life for their average listener. I can't say what's normal for their employees but I'm sure Miss Irene at tax office or Miss Mabel knitting baby booties at home doesn't want to hear about the latest sale on skin flicks at the local "crank" shop. I know the spots run on Z-106, too, but that's different-people actually listen to Miss 103. Just please tell me they aren't running those with the casino and beer spots on Halleluah!

Isn't it a Clear Channel station?

I've often wondered the same thing. If it were my station, I wouldn't advertise anything that my mama wouldn't buy. That sort of stuff in my opinion gives the station a bad image. I feel the same way about shock jocks talking about how much they drank last night or how big some chicks (BLEEP) were or telling fart jokes. The same goes for dirty song lyrics. I don't even like the strip joint ads on the radio either. Everyone knows that the strip joints are run by crooks anyway. That sort of stuff really shows a stations true colors. Some people just have no sense of responsibllity, decency or pride in their station. Its all about the money. Could you picture Farmer Jim Neal doing a titty bar spot? "Well folks, ya'll come on down to Danny's Gentlemen Club tonight! I better hush, that old fice dog is humping my leg" Think about it Miss 103. WWFD (what would farmer do?).

oh and seems I heard a casino ad on 95.5, but didn't know about the beer. That was the single most stupid thing I've ever heard on a Gospel station in my life. Don't these people read the bible?

Its ok to call me a right wing, bible thumping conservative. If doing whats right and proper makes me one, then its a label I wear proudly.

Whenever I go through Tunica, I always see lots of billboards for CC's Memphis Hallelujah station!

Money's money... adult book stores buy spots just like everyone else and you would be amazed who you can see at one of those places. More people go to those places than you would realize and even more people who listen to a country music station would go to a place like that than you think. Don't get all vocal-minority on me because, trust me, it's more than you think.

You can be on a moral high horse all you want but if an adult book store came in and wanted to purchase $5,000 worth of spots, would you really turn that down? I think not. I know I wouldn't. I got bills to pay too and I know I'd want some of that going into my pocket if I were in sales.

Besides, if the spots offend you that much, you have a button or knob that will enable you to change the station until it's over.

RE: The previous post...

See what I mean, while it may be normal for you and yours to cozy up to a porn flick at night it is not for the general population. I think you missed the point entirely. Next time you're browsing through the smut look around and instead of who you see there with you imagine all the people who aren't there. (That would be most of the universe.) Some people go around all day and don't even think about vibrators, XXX Movies, and fetish films. If you had any understanding of the fundamentals of programming and broadcast ethics you'd know that you have to strike a balance between profit and community values. And for the record, $5,000 is a cheap price for someone's principles. At least you admit that you'd be for sale, cheap. No one can call you a hypocrite. Where would you draw the line on what's proper to discuss in a spot for an adult book store. Can we talk about the viscosity of the various lubes and which is better for what? How about a run down of the various apparati genitali (Pardon my Latin) including size charts and suggested uses. I'm just curious since money is money.....

This whole thread about Clear Channel running strip joint and "adult materials" reminds me a lot of an old WKRP in Cincinatti episode. You may remember the one in which salesman Herb sold some spots for some type of "medicine" that were described as "black beauties" on the air. The pills were perfectly legal and technically WKRP did nothing wrong. However it didn't take long for them to find out that a listener had overdosed on the "black beauties" that WKRP was selling (Yes they were just as guilty) In the end Herb had to go on the air and apologize and beg the listeners not to take the drugs. The basic moral of that episode was that just because something is legal and you can get away with it still doesn't make it right. So Clear Channel: Leave the sex in the bedroom where it belongs. Stations could learn a lot from WKRP Reruns.

Incidently there was also an episode where they looked into the future and WKRP was being run by a machine and Herb was the only employee left. That actually came true. Except its worse than that, now they've got a computer running everything and nobody is home.

Amazingly, Pat, you run into some people that seem facinated by the appeal for working for the "big" company, and automatically jump to their defense when someone has the audacity to question the ethics or skill of the operations of that company. Just "changing the dial" and ignoring something that you know is wrong is a selfish, childish, uneducated view that's keeping a lot of people at a low class level of existence. Sadly, when you try to point it out to them, they get angry and lash out at the messenger. Myself, I think the fact that Miss-103 and fellow stations are desperate for revenue, and not turning any money away. What bugs me is the two-faced way that Miss-103 and Hallelujah 95 presents themselves in a holier than thou way, telling listeners that they'll pray for them, or what their "ministry" is about for the listener, then not adhering to any standards as far as sex businesses and the like are concerned. The very fact that you hear casino ads on a gospel station is absurd. Clear Channel didn't used to be this way. I know, I used to work for them.<P ID="signature">______________

Amen on that post. If I hear someone use that tired old "just change the station" remark one more time I'll pull my hair out. Anytime you voice your oppinion they start saying to "Get a Life" or "Youve got too much time on your hands" and yep I've noticed that sometimes Rick and Kim get a little religous in the morning but yet the same cluster is peddling smut. And don't even get me started on the hip hop lyrics that "the beat" used to play

Back when I worked for CC-Jackson,('95-'01) we used to run Strip Club ads (after 7pm) on Katfish 95 and Z-106... we even did WEEKLY remotes from Tiffany's, Danny's and other "Gentleman's Clubs" ...and that was 10 years ago.... in those days, you'd never hear anything like that on MISS 103, but it has been done for a long, long time... -Gil

I remember that pretty well; I thought about it the other day. I changed the car stereo to 95.5 one night back about 1995 and my Dad was not happy. He wouldn't listen to Katfish 95. He told me he listened to Miss 103 because they didn't have those ads.
