What's Up With The Buzz?

P

Anyone listening to The Buzz (99.3/105.5 FM) today (Tuesday, June 3)? Heard The Fray, Miley Cyrus, Chris Daughtry, Ashlee Simpson, Fall Out Boy. Mighty white for a "hip hop and R&B" station. Also noticed the imaging has been altered to remove the terms "hip hop and R&B." No DJs either.

Anybody have a clue what's going on?

Hi Phoebe (or is it Rob or Gary?)

Wasn't that a clever stunt to stir up some talk during the New Jersey Broadcasters convention.

ho hum

Interesting how you came on and made your first post using all the right words, and you
even figured out how to put your bogus message in a nice bold font.

It's Phoebe. You had it right the first time. Not Rob or Gary.

I have no vested interest in the station, its programming or its ownership. Nor do I have any interest in the New Jersey Broadcasters convention. Perhaps if it was the New Jersey Press Association gathering locally...maybe...that's my branch of media. I'm just a listener with some loose ties to radio through my own genre and was curious if anyone had noticed and perhaps knew why.

As for the message being "bogus," you can check out the logs at mediabase247.com for yourself.

Regarding the right words, I would hope so, I write for a living, all the spelling is correct too. Personally, I like bold fonts, and sans serif to boot.

I said your message was bogus, not the fact that The Buzz was playing games today.
I saw that on yes.com I'm sure you have NOTHING to do with it. Right!

What the hell? Now The Buzz wants to position itself as a CHR? With WAYV and SoJo adding a little bit more Urban music (albeit the lighter stuff), this is an incredibly baffling move. Hey guys - ever hear of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"?

While I'm not much for modern hip-hop, this station was a gold mine. Despite not being quite as dominant as it once was, it still has put up very solid ratings. Now they're playing tons of acts that can be heard millions of other places.

My predictions: Expect "The Touch" to boost its audience substantially at the expense of "The Buzz". Right around Tuesday 12 AM, they played the likes of Nickelback, Colbie Caillat, Miley Cyrus and Christina Aguilera. Guaranteed to chase away ANYONE that was listening the previous hour. Very questionable move here - I don't know what the owners were thinking. I'm quite certain it will backfire on them.

Even tho I totally DETEST rap and hip hop, why in the blue Harleysville Hell would The Buzz do this? Has Gary finally lost his mind?

Where can we find your blog, or samples of your work?

Look, I'm typing like you now...

Buzz now Top 40

Just saw it on the front page. Was there any stir going that one of the Atlantic properties was due for a flip to Top 40 (with Paul Kelly's expertise at AYV)? Altho it would make sense to stave off a challenge by having The Buzz handle the lower end of the demo, and 95.1 tailored to the upper end, but why leave a gaping hole for an Urban-formatted station, unless Fisher tends on skewing The Touch younger?

If I were Coastal, I'd be adding more RCHR tracks to Q107, eventually dropping most, if not all, pop rock titles.

The move was done to block 98.3 from going chr- top 40....I think things are going to get interesting in this market...any word on who is taking over as PD of WAYV?

Buzz no more! The station is now 99-3 Kiss FM.

No jocks, no legal ID's (none that I heard anyway), just liners and internet-quality jingles?

It's still a very boneheaded move. Why would you flip one of the top-rated stations in the market? Couldn't they have opted to flip another station instead? Buzz listeners are NOT going to stand for this, and will surely listen to something else. None of those people want to hear Miley Cyrus, Chris Daughtry, etc. - all of which already receive heavy airtime on WAYV and SoJo. This is definitely going to blow up in their faces, and I'll be saying "I told you so".

They should have flipped WZXL, or had WAYV lean a little more Urban. The latter played Sean Paul's "Temperature" not too long ago - not what I necessarily consider to be a Hot AC track.

And ZXL? Who listens to that station anyway? They call themselves a rock station, yet they play Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, The Eagles and who knows what else. It's the weakest performing Equity property by far, and for good reason. It only gets better ratings than WJSE because of its heritage and flamethrower signal.

The Buzz was #3 in the market, and they flipped it. Even if they were trying to beat the competition to the punch, it was still a boneheaded move.

Huh ? I was on the air at WYSP during the Classic Rock days and:
They call themselves a rock station, yet they play Fleetwood Mac,
Billy Joel, The Eagles and who knows what else.
and they did VERY well. Those are core classic rock artists.

The web site still say’s it’s a Buzz. Is it a Buzz? Is it a Kiss? It's a BuzzKiss? Or, maybe it's just a bad case of chapped lips. Well, buzz or a kiss means pain either way, when you're tinkering with a top numbers achiever. That is unless you’re prepared to make WAYV an urban/churban slant, with the big signal, and cut 102.7 off at the pass. Cause you know 102.7 is getting ready to flip and fly. Musical chairs is always amusing. Pass the planters peanuts. Which way to Kohr bros.

Sam, right this way, my friend (as I point to the Wildwood Boardwalk). It's on me and we'll raise a toast to your father (whom I admired greatly).

And, as always, you are correct.... this will be fun. Every other year, it seems something major happens down-a-shore, and I love to watch the goings-on in this "little quirky market".

Rob its Kiss not Kiss Sam Lit's ass....Anyway to tinker with the Buzz was a stupid move. The ratings were high and the station had the urban demo won.Now AYV and KISS will be competing against one another not to mention JSE doesn't have the strongest single...I'd be more worried about the Shark and 98.3 and what Atlantic may do with them.Equity managed to alienate the Buzz's audience and to hurt WAYV on the same day..

kiss-fm how much longer until clear channel tells them to take the name down

the buzz sounded good last weekend with a current playlist i knew something was up

WZXL is #1 with men 12+, tied with what was the Buzz. It's not Equity's weakest station at all.

Men whose idea of excitement is Diagnosis Murder and Matlock marathons? :p

As far as the big picture goes, it only rated about a 4 compared to the other Equity FMs, which were in the 7s and 8s.

The one negative in flipping ZXL would have been conceding the Male audience to the competition, which the new media outlet that runs WMGM and WJSE (Atlantic?) would have to themselves.

I still think the smarter approach would have been to add a few more Urban tracks to WAYV's playlist, giving them a Mainstream CHR format. For the record, WAYV is even billing itself as "South Jersey's #1 Hit Music Station" on air, so even their IDs position them as a CHR.

My point is that tinkering with a successful formula is foolish, and that's exactly what Equity did. They went into panic mode when a new media conglomerate entered the market and made a BAD programming decision. It will take until January '09 for them to find out, but they will regret the choice to flip The Buzz into a CHR.
