What's up with the HD2 Channels?

It sounds like WNOU HD-2 has been off the air for the better part of the weekend. I was listening to WZPL-HD 2 last evening and on the way into work this afternoon and both times it sounded like "the needle was stuck in the groove."

I know that HD radio's aren't exactly flying off the shelves... but for the 40 people or so that have them... we would like to, at least, think that those boxes in the tech center are just as important as the main pipe. :-\

Also, keep in mind that people who know the 40 with HD radios aren't likely to rush out and buy them if they hear the HD2's are being neglected. DX'ers would like to say people aren't buying HD radios because it destroys the AM band, but the biggest reason is that radio operators aren't giving anyone an excuse to go out and buy them.

Ya know how your Windows desktop computer locks up every once in awhile and has to be rebooted? Well, all those HD2 boxes are running on Windows too, so you can guess how reliable they are.

I noticed the HD2 of WZPL was "stuck" beginning Thursday and lasted most of the
weekend. Last night I tried again about 6pm and the comedy channel was back on.
One would think it would simply be a duty of the on-air jock on WZPL once an hour to simply
check the HD2 program. Had that person done that, then I think we would have been
able to hear the comedy all weekend instead of the technical flaw.
Their HD2 now has an ID about every hour, but the person giving it sure slurs
through the name Indianapolis rather fast.

Why is it that the HD stations signals sound so terrible? And why does no one have them? I mean, didn't they supposedly have this technology for 10 years before the radio industry finally stopped bickering over payouts and unveiled it to the public? A year and a half ago, I remember when Russ installed the 2 channels at WKLU. He made a huge advertising push, spent a whole bunch of money getting them up and running, and really promoted them. I can remember being pretty excited. Only I found I couldn't A) Find an HD radio in most stores and B) the few HD radios out there had terrible signals. I couldn't even get WKLU HD1 past Plainfield. When I brought this up to station management, the only response I got was something to the effect of that the kinks still had to be ironed out and it would get better over time. Things of that nature. If I were Russ or any other station owner I would be pretty upset with the industry that I spent all that time, money and effort installing them and then have them be a total flop.

Here we are two years later and the product appears to still be total junk. Why is the radio industry letting this sort of garbage be promoted and why aren't they doing anything to fix it? Do they really think that anyone is going to purchase an HD radio over satellite with such a terrible signal? Are they incapable of doing anything about it or do they just not care? Seems like it would be a wonderful opportunity to bring back community radio and maybe some music genres people would like to hear. But not if no one can hear it.

Once upon a time, a local man thought he had a great invention. It was the RCA Video Disc Player,
a record player that played movies. But, darn it! Someone else invented the VCR and it went flop
flop flop.
Now do you think it's a good idea to stream with a low bit rate on your local limited signal
when someone else has invented something called the internet?
It will cost you tens of thousands to put IBOC on your limited local channel. Meanwhile
my kid is streaming all over the world with more bandwidth from his bedroom.
IBOC. Too little! Too late! Digital belongs on something called the World Wide Web!

I live just next to Broad Ripple Park and have two HD receivers. One is the Accurian from
Radio Shack and the other is the Radiosophy unit. Both receive Indy's HD2 and
HD3's quite well. I listen most to the comedy on WZPL HD2.
Occasionally I listen to the DELTA format on 107.9 HD2(I do not remember their calls)
....the former WTPI.
