What's Up With The Tonight Show??

What's going on with The Tonight Show? It has been in reruns the past few weeks and they have been showing reruns from a month ago already. Tonight's Tonight Show has John Travolta on it in a repeat from just a few weeks ago. I was wondering if Jay was sick or is he doing a movie or something?

I didn't know Jay took a month off, never happened before to my knowledge. Does Letterman take the whole month off? Conan? Kimmel? Craig? Not even Johnny Carson took a month off. A week, YES. But a month, NO.

Beats me why that Jay took the month off besides it being August. I miss Headlines on Monday nights.

Speaking of which: Whatever happened to guest hosts? When Johnny went on vacation, he had many guest hosts, the most annoying IMO of course, Joan Rivers. I'm sure there's a few personalities out there that'd take a stipend to be a guest host. CBS surely didn't find a lack of them while they were in transition at the Late Late Show.

Jay took two weeks off at the beginning of July, and last night began the second week of another two-week vacation. He has not been out a month. In fact, it has only been a week. Letterman has taken the same weeks off this summer. You will very rarely see them not go on vacation at the same time.

NBC's research shows that more recent reruns rate higher than those that go back two months or more, that's why you're seeing recent repeats. The movies that the stars are promoting are still in theaters and the jokes are still almost funny.

With NBC being owned by Universal, there is an upper hand in the timing of recent reruns that promote their movies, but is that still better than having guest hosts?

Carson took off 3-4 weeks every summer to vacation in England, around the time of Wimbledon.

Oh, and 20 years ago, most cable systems had 30 channels. Jay is a notorious workaholic, which has been great for NBC. After his heart attack and then the birth of Baby Harry, Dave seems to take much more vacation throughout the year.

There is no doubt that another reason to run "recent" reruns is that many viewers will watch it and not even realize it is a rerun. The guests are more relevant and the jokes are more current. It's not until you hear a guest intro'd with a specific date that you realize it's a rerun.

Here is a great listing of talk show guests and schedules:
