What's up with this?

TRIAD Classic Rock WXRG/GULFPORT-BILOXI, MS flips to Classic Hits as WHGO (105.9 GO-FM) after a day of stunting with FLEETWOOD MAC's "Go Your Own Way" on a loop. WAYNE WATKINS remains as PD, and the "JOHN BOY & BILLY" show segues to sister Classic Country WUJM (96.7 HANK-FM). WHGO, which will run jockless for the time being, is voiced by RICH VAN SLYKE.

Thought they were holding their own against Z95.3. Was it the Spring book (that has been embargoed)?

Glad to see Wayne stayed on, hang in there man.

Are they positioning it as "Classic Top 40?" This format intrigues me a great deal. IF it's done the RIGHT WAY (energy and live personalities who know and "get" the music), there is huge potential. If not (voicetracking and sweepers), it will die a premature death as did "The Greatest Hits of the Seventies" 10 years ago.

good!! the classic rock format is dead! and weirdo bro worked at wfmf in the early 80s. he knows classic top 40 as well as anybody.now to go turn my antenna..

I can count the # of complaints on one hand. Overwhelming positive response...
Thanks SmashedCD & DumbRadioGuy...I did my 1st remote under new format yesterday, and people were really enjoying it. Sure, we'll lose some of the hardcore classic rock males...we'll add females. We still play the rock hits of Aerosmith, Zeppelin, Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, etc. We will run "jockless" for a few weeks...and no one has been released.

weido bro thats my favorite format. i wish you could stream. i am not completly against radio..just clear channel radio :)
i am just sickened that rock radio ala 1983 evolved into the 200 or less song playlist classic rock format. i cant pick you up right now..i usually can ???

It's that time of year (fall/spring equinox) when radio signals go haywire. Watch for some weerd skipping/DX'ing in the next few weeks...

Signals duct less in the Fall than in the Spring, generally speaking. There was some jaw-dropping stuff along the Gulf in mid-April, lasting 4 days straight. But, along the Coast, ducting across the Gulf can get interesting most anytime. And, Fall can be pretty good.

Now, true "skip," reflections off the E-layer that can bring FM from 1000 or more miles away, is really a Summer thing. Look for that from roughly mid-May until early August.

can anyone list the core artists and possibly a 1 hour playlist..or post an mp3 of an aircheck?

I'm putting together a scope for our new voice guy, I'll share it with you guys here soon time permitting. Extensive TV campaign running "I've got a radio in my finger." Funny as hell.

The Coast was a great location for both AM and FM DX'ing. AM from Florida across the saltwater path (540/Pine Hills, 620/St. Petersburg, 720/Hernando, 970/Tampa, etc.) and FM because of the moist trop ducts.

The reverse was true also. When I lived in Ocala, Florida, there would be a few times a year when the band would open to FMs from New Orleans to Pensacola. My best catches were WRNO/99.5, WJLQ/100.7, WABB/97.5, and whatever was on 104.1/Atmore in the early 1990s. Country, I think. (They had just gone to their big stick and moved into Mobile.)

True. Of course, the mechanisms bringing in AM and FM are different. The AM can be quite striking. Back in my days on the Mississippi Coast, Cuba was in daytime, everyday. Wow. That's over 600 miles.

But, on the same token, Tampa FM and TV were exceptionally common. Most days (but not all), I could point my FM yagi at Tampa, and get 104.7. Similarly, the Tampa UHF TVs, while not as common as FM, were simply no big deal. Many an evening, I planned my TV watching around WTOG-44.

Most interesting stuff I would get in Gautier included high-band VHF TV from Cuba (though, only once), and several high-band VHF stations from Mexico (the XE transmitter plants are a bit more robust than the Cubans). One afternoon, channel 9 from Tampico was in -- snow-free. I have some pictures of those somewhere.

Of course, we don't get that stuff in Memphis. I did, however, get a nice tropo opening into FL & TX back in April. I worked Corpus Christi on 144 MHz with just 5 watts. That's 137.4 miles per watt through the troposphere! Report was S8, if that means anything to you. Running more sane power levels, I seemingly worked every man, woman, and child in FL. Fun.

I miss living a mile from the water.

Dead Elvis,

When were you in Gautier? I lived in Ocean Springs last year. Right on the water. Katrina put an end to that, of course.

The Cuban "tick-tock" station on 570 was easily audible on my car radio both day and night. Could you hear this also, or were you living there before WTNI migrated from 570 up to 1640?

104.7/Tampa would be a tough catch now since there's a local on 104.9 (licensed to Moss Point.)

Drew

It has been -- gosh -- twenty years since my Gautier days. In fact, my Mom had moved to Ocean Springs, to a subdivision just off the Back Bay. Her home didn't do too well last August, and she only just moved back in a couple of weeks ago.

Actually, Tampa on 104.7 was with 104.9 on. Of course, it was a Class A back then, had no IBOC, and was not yet transmitting from Vancleve. Still, with a directional antenna, much of that can be eliminated.

Other Tampas were often available, but 104.7 seemed to be the clearest frequency.
