What's up with WABC's signal

Does WABC power down when Limbaugh comes on? I live down in Delaware and I 77 is my only Paul Harvey outlet besides WEEU from Reading, PA. 77 comes in OK until Rush comes on, then the IBOC hiss becomes unbearable and I have to change to a more local station to catch the show. Is there a liberal in the woodpile trying to hurt Rush at Citadel by turning down the juice once his show comes on? I do notice a decline in signal strength over the past few weeks in the daypart. Check for saboteurs!

Try adjusting your colander or tinfoil chapeau.

Consider yourself lucky if WABC powers down when Limbaugh comes on. To my death, I'll always consider it a tragedy that the once free and great musicradio was transformed into a repressive, hateful talker....

I have not noticed any problem. I do listen to Rush on WABC while in my Philly part of the drive home at 2pm, particularly when the Phillies are on 1210.

Is something electrical turning on at your location about that time? I have problems even with KYW in Philly at certain times, in certain locals.

They needed to die in 1982... They were really getting old.
But without getting into too much politics on this thread, first let me say I am and have been a Democrat voter my whole voting life. But I do listen to talk radio a lot. Lots of people who feel as you do like to call these talk show hosts "hateful" and "repressive". Whenever I have challenged anyone to give me specific examples of Limbaugh's (or Hannity's) so-called "hateful" remarks, they rarely have a response, and if they do, they quote something that's always out of context. You DO believe in free speech, don't you?

Classifying something as "hateful" or "repressive" is an old tactic of the Marxists when they can't defend against the facts. Have you talked to a lefty lately? I did last night for what turned out to be a rather unsatisfying evening. Weak on the facts, but they did know that they hated Rush. Pretty sad.
Back to WABC's signal. I have really worked hard to figure out what the problem is and there doesn't seem to be any local conditions that effect strength that I can't isolate. It just seems that hiss increases as the day rolls on. It must be the IBOC, because in the good old days (pre IBOC), WABC boomed in relatively unscathed. WOR is now louder during the day and so is WCBS, but 77 definitely has taken some hits. Oh, and by the way, Imus can't suck enough!

OK. Getting back to RADIO here....

WABC probably has THE LOUSIEST signal of all the 50,000 watt stations in New York City, bar none. I seriously think someone needs to check the ground system at the tower in Lodi. I live in Holbrook, NY (Suffolk County), and frigging WLIB 1190 comes in better than WABC at night!!!

Jeeze. :-\

I was comparing the strength of NY stations again today, and 77 has become the loser of the gang. I get WOR the best, then 660. 880, 1130, then 770, followed by 1560 (which has improved over the years). Is there a new guy at the helm at Lodi? There was some fella that was named something or other for being under 30 who was from WABC engineering. Is he maybe too young to correctly tune an Orban or what ever they run nowadays? The IBOC hiss from itself kind of drowns it here in Delaware. It used to boom in here 24-7 except for Fidelaradio noise, but no more. The signal to carrier ratio is poor. It is a good sounding signal, just no power to it any more. I notice the poblems on my Bose, a few Panasonic clock radios, a good Sony portable, an old GE table radio circa 1968 and on the Grundig table set I brought back from Wolfsburg.

SHAME ON YOU! WABC was the best station in NYC ,unltil it switched to TALK.Why doesnt the NYC area have any music on AM anymore?Ohio does.If they put WABC musicradio back on ,i'd trash my Fm radios.

Wow...surprised you actually use a COMPUTER!

Had "Musicradio 77" still been viable, it would still be. It stopped being so more than a quarter-century ago; congratulations on being one of the very last to hold out hope.

Remember, skywave propagation changes with time of day. Groundwave signals travel faster than through the air. Changes in propagation speed and distance due to soil conditions, moisture, air pressure, sun spots, temperature all affecting either. Now arrival times of both waves could be out of phase. You can calculate your distance, estimate sky wave or line of sight travel times and compare it to ground wave arrival time. Now you understand how the two can combine to create a null or even change direction.
Engineers will attempt to correct me so understand I had to put this in a simple definition and language. I am sure some others will have the time to calculate this for you, provide computer models, graphs, charts and perhaps a computer program you can fool around with at home.

I live in Northeast Ohio. WCBS [880] comes blasting in here at night time like it's a local station, WFAN [660] is second best and WABC [770] is way behind those two. About music being on AM radio, sometimes I miss it, just takes me back to the 60s when I was a kid laying in bed listening to the music float in over the static and crackling from the thunderstorms. I had a boss who did not get an FM radio either in his car or house till the early 90s, said there was no reason to since he only listened to baseball games. Even though they now broadcast games on FM stations he still refuses to listen to them on FM. [and this is coming from a guy who owns movie theaters and refused to install DTS, THX or any other stereo sound system till 10 years ago. His reasoning was that "people don't come to the movies for sound". I told him to turn off the sound one day and he could tell that to the customers when they came out to complain.

Close but seriously, have you tried to listen to the Knicks or Rangers at night? Sorry, WEPN is the worst, but I do agree that WABC runs a close second. PS, I'm in Nesconset.

They're running an Omnia audio processor and are one of only two of the big AM's in NYC now running an Omnia. I know FAN, CBS and WINS now have 9400's on the air, BBR is still using a 9100 and 1050 has a 9200.

I've lived in Western NY since 1989 and I have pretty much the same experience as the gentleman in NE Ohio.

It's generally been problematic getting WABC; WCBS is generally the most clear with the occassional known interference spots (like driving right by another station's tower, for example!).

All nighttime listening of course.

I suppose with streaming it doesn't make that much difference what I can get over the air, still, there is something about listening that brings me back to hanging out the bedroom window DXing on summer nights...

Hell, I can barely hear AM 77 in my room in Holbrook!!! But then again, Long Island's poor ground conductivity doesn't help.

Ehhh....no great loss. *shrug*

*tunes to AM 1580 instead* ;D

Yeah the computer is for looking up all the old songs that 77 used to play and to look up when they do the rewind shows ....This may sound totally stupid but dammit,I loved that station!Im not the only one...
All my friends remember it like it was yesterday and Im only 36.only-
The best were all the jingles. That was good radio.Bubble gum music and rest assure there were less murders and cynical people back in the 70s-80s,it was a happier and more easy time.

Sure it was, crime was sky high back then. Couldn't even feel safe going into the subway when it was daytime outside much less night. Son of Sam was running loose..the lingering effects of the oil embargo. People were very cynical back then, just doesn't compare to how bad it is today.

It WAS good stuff! I remember it very well, along with WMCA and the Philly AM's, WFIL and WIBG. It's not coming back, unfortunately, except for a neat little 12 hour stretch tomorrow, from 6a-6p.

And, you know, there were social problems then too, but, somehow, they didn't seem as overpowering as they are today. Those things are sort of hard to quantify, anyway, outside of crime rates.

Enjoy Rewind on Memorial Day! And remember the brave men and women in the service of our great nation around the world. They make the great experiement called America possible!!
