Whats with all the classic rock on KRXQ?

I've noticed lots of oldies in the past week. Seems kind of redundant IMO. If I want to listen to classic rock, I'd listen to their sister station, KSEG. I don't listen to KRXQ for classic rock, I listen for NEW music. Any insider know the rationale behind this move?

Lately, I've taken great affinity to stations and their call letters. I believe they can symbolically stand for something.

So looking within KRXQ, I spot the RX meaning "prescription."

If this is the step they've decided to take at this time, I hope it means they want to heal Q=Quickly.

If you're wondering about any more meanings, I've been known to say 'K' out loud, which in the growing Hispanic market is "Que?" which means "What?!"

Hi John,

I can answer your question. I program the music on 98 Rock. Feel free to call me any time at 334-7777.

In a nut shell though, nothing on 98 Rock has changed musically. We're playing the same ratio of classic rock as we always have. Songs come and go from the older categories, but the number is essentially the same as it was 3 or even 4 years ago.

Anyway, call me any time to discuss further. Have a good one, and thanks!

With the exception of Rob, Arnie & Dawn, I love listening to 98 ROCK. And I love the Blend of Both Classic Rock and New Rock. Brings back memories of the legendary KZAP which by coincidence, was on the same frequency as 98 ROCK. I see my old friend, Craig The Dog Faced Boy is working at 98 Rock. I remember him from KTRB-860 and KHOP-104.1/95.1 Modesto. Good Guy! Pat, You are doing a great job programming 98 Rock. No Changes Is necessary.

But, is that the real Pat?

Either way, when I first heard Craig, my first thought was that he really sucked. That gravelly voice and curmudgen-like attitude. Goes to show why I was never a real program director (although I held that title at one point) He, Joe and Pat really give the station personality.

Maybe the number of classic tunes is the same, but my perception is that they're going further back, with the likes of Steppenwolf, Ram Jam etc. Not that it's bad music, to me it just sounds out of place mixed in with Tool and the like. But I'm not a music programmer and am definitely not the typical radio listener

My bet is that that is Pat.

When I was rolling down 80 on my way in to Sac to start at KRXQ in '01...I heard one of my favorite breaks:

Caller complaining about the station:

"Who's your boss?"

"I'm sorry?"

"Who's your boss..I'm going to tell then how rude you are!"

"Pat Martin...Give 'im a call!"

...and into spots.

Made me glad I was going there :)

Yep John, Neanderpaul is correct...it's really me. I've been looking at the boards lately to see all the chatter surrounding the RAD debacle. Like I said, feel free to call at 334-7777 or e-mail directly at [email protected].

I know some of those classics are kind of a curve ball, like the Ram Jam and Hotel California...and then there's Crazy by Gnarls Barkley. We play these not only because they test well, but they help us in our evil plan to be a cume-friendly rock station, sort of a rock I-Pod on shuffle.

I appreciate your comments on our personalities, thank you.

One of my favorite Paul Marshall bits: Paul interviewing Joe Torre's tumor. Still cracks me up to this day!

PM, truly a class act as always. Tis a good thing that 'ol Ugly Shirt doesn't axe people for reading, let alone posting on the boards. Probably the biggest reason I don't apply for a PT gig with you guys... I read the boards every so often, which is a major career limiting move anywhere you go!

Thank you for keeping the open-door policy... very rarely do you find such a transparent operation in this day.

I originally kidded about the RX = Prescription. Maybe it was more fitting than I first thought, seeing this outreach in motion.

Even though radio stations compete against one another, I hate when something negative happens to one station because then the entire industry gets marred. Such bashing gives radio naysayers (e.g., Fairness Doctrine huggers) a field day casting dark shadows over ALL Program Directors. That really concerns me when listeners have so many other sources of entertainment to turn to { TV, iPods, DVD's, DVR's, etc. }

So this reminded me of one company that used a negative incident to now be seen as an extremely trustworthy one. I'm thinking of the Rx/pharmaceutical Johnson & Johnson and their whole turnaround with the Tylenol tampering. They addressed it, changed their packaging and now are frequently cited as an example of what a company can do after it tripped over itself.

I'm also reminded of something I read recently in Advertising Age. The marketing guest said go ahead and use your cause marketing efforts for what they really are. They're "not about philanthropy, they're about enlightened self-interest." Make it part of your branding, and realize there's nothing wrong with a profit motive. I'd really like radio to be seen more as the medium that cares about its local community, especially when it makes money for everyone it touches.

Some people will respond nicely to both individual stations and an industry that wants to recover, including financially.

98 Rock is one of the best sounding Rock Stations in the U.S. In all of my travels, I always check out the Rock Stations. In Stockton, Where I now live, the Rock Stations I can pick up include: "Active Rock, KMRQ-96.7 Manteca-Modesto And KRXQ-98.5 Sacramento", "Classic Rock, KSEG-96.9, KHKK-104.1 Modesto and KSAN-107.7 San Mateo-San Francisco", "Classic Hits, KCCL-92.1 Placerville-Sacramento, KHJQ-93.1 Pollack Pines-Sacramento and KSTN-1420 Stockton" and with the recent loss of KWOD-106.5, No Alternative Rock Stations, Can't pick up KITS-105.3 either. Of all of the stations that I mention, My favorite Active Rock station is KRXQ, favorite Classic Rock station is KSAN (aka THE BONE) and favorite Classic Hits has to be KCCL even though they do have the Rivercats sports.

They Must Be Doing Something Right Since They Are Now #2 In The Ratings. It Must Be That Extra Added Blend Of Classic Rock With New Rock!

They inherited most of KWOD's audience. KRXQ plays a lot of what KWOD played plus some classic rock and a lot of how should I put this gently.... more of T & A appeal delivery.

Fox is a meticulous programmer who has put together as good a staff as any rock station in the country. A lot of people on this board don't get the morning show, but RAD have not only mastered the fundamentals, but display brilliant character development and a perfect balance of conflict. They work their asses off and are worth every penny they earn. Pat's longevity in the market is a keystone, and Craig and Joe are so relatable to rock fans it's scary. The only thing I can think of that would make 98 Rock a better station would be the return of Vader in morning drive.

Congrats on the ratings! That's because 98Rock DOES rock! With the exception of mornings, every daypart is great!
I like the music, new and old, and there's just enough jock talk to make it interesting. Speaking of good guys, when I interviewed at Entercom, Pat was only one of two people in the hall to say Hi. Rock on!!!
