whats with all the complaining

there seems to be no end to the complaining about how bad things are in the triad. I do agree that the modern standard for mainstream, adult contemporary is crap-- and by that I mean the hip-hop, urbanized rythmic crud being generated by beyonce, justin timbergojumpinalake, american idol pipsqueaks etc. But isn't that really the music industry's fault? stations have to play what's being produced, and like the old saying goes, you can't polish a turd. At least the jocks don't sound like college amatuers in this market, and believe me, there are top 100 markets where that is not the case, so count your blessings. But let's put music radio aside for a second.......

from the perspective of a talk listener, I've found paradise on earth! So many choices for a market this size, especially if you include PTF as part of the triad. Put that station together with SJS, ZTK, NPR (stop laughing, I like NPR), and you've got a menu worth bragging about. I admit that I'm partial to ZTK because i like the variety throughout dayparts. Even that goofy handleman is starting to grow on me. judging from other posts I've seen, brad kranz seems to have burned some bridges around here, but he obviously knows how to engage listeners, or at least get them stirred up. About two weeks ago, I heard his sidekick brit doing an impersonation of Strom Thurmond, and I literally peed my pants in the car. We just dont have that kind of talent or dry humor in the stuffy northern wasteland where I once resided.

is it ironic that your screen name is disgruntled and you're complaining about complaining?

one day, i hear that brit will imitate someone who isn't dead...

well if you must know, my full name is Disgruntled Former Employee (there was a time when it looked like i would be known as "Gone Postal" but thats a story for another day.) as for brit, i believe he does a dan rather "news" update on a regular basis; I know Dan's career is dead, but he aint quite in the coffin yet.

If those guys were any good, they would be beating...

Chris and Chris
Chuck and LeeAnn
Murphy
Wicker
Eloise
John Boy and Billy
Tom Joyner
Steve Harvey
102 jammity jamz
Flynn

or ANYONE.

Also, if they were any good, they would be in Atlanta or DC or Chicago or Philly or even CHARLOTTE for Gawd's sake. They are treading water as it is...that liberal twaddle just ain't sellin'.

(although, brit did do a bang-up Tony Danza once, but in typical krantz fashion, he put the kibosh on it)

Simon pulls some strong 25-54 numbers, but no one ever talks about them
on this board. I don't work there, just curious as to your opinions on their
format. Big playlist.

Dittohead, let's keep in mind that talk on fm is still a relatively new frontier, and i'm estimating that ZTK is about 4 years old in its current format, so I think its fair to say that neither the fm-talk format or the morning show at that station is anywhere close to being as established as most of the other stations/shows that you listed. moreover, brad and brit are going up against music stations, and most people still tend to turn on fm to hear songs, more or less, which even includes stations that play two songs (or less) per hour during morning drive. Its true the numbers are not spectacular at ZTK, but if mr. curtis is willing to stick it out and see the long term picture, it should pay off in a few more years..... by the way, don't put too much faith in those arbitron numbers-- altogether now, lets say it: WEIGHTED BOOKS

arbitron...complete balderdash when it screws ya and the ABSOLUTE GOSPEL when is kisses ya.

BTW, Chris and Chris play ZERO tunes 7 hours a day.

When will it be fair to call ZTK and the morning show a complete failure?

year 5?
year 8?
year 9?

those guys talk over each other all the time, like a couple of 2nd-semester freshmen doing a show at a 3-watt college station. they have zero panache and they can't figure out WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE? are they the naughty rock morning show skirting the line of good taste? are they the hard news show trying to break down complex issues? are they the morning zoo fraught with wackiness?

the listeners clearly are confused...

(the syndicated stuff is good and i like the football)

as far as chris and chris are concerned, i was speaking in general terms about FM morning shows, but thats not really the point i was trying to make. That "liberal twaddle" you referred to earlier may very well seem liberal when compared with the usual right-wings rants that dominate talk. I think its perfectly fine to be intellectually honest during a politically-oriented morning show, even if that means not being in lock-step with hannity every minute, or being in lockstop with randy rhodes every minute, but I digress......I rarely get to listen to brad&britt or any other morning show on a regular basis because of my work schedule, but the times I've heard them, they seem quite willing to skewer pres. bush and hillary with equal enthusiasm. BTW, does anyone know how well ZTK is hitting their target demo in morning drive? isn't that more important than how many listeners they can pull away from johnboy&billy or steve harvey?

Dittohead, im afraid we'll have to agree to disagree about a timetable for calling ZTK a failure; I believe that station is ahead of its time, and within five years there will be a lot of wannabes playing catchup based on the ZTK model.

Also, for someone who detests their morning show, you seem to have a lot of detailed knowledge about its day-to-day presentation. Could it be that somebody is, perhaps, a little........disgruntled?

So, now I am going to be criticized for knowing what I'm talking about? I truly apologize for having specific complaints about something and being detailed about why they suck. I think if you would listen a little more to the ZTK morning show, you wouldn't be quite so high on them.

BTW, happy Thanksgiving.

;D Could it be that somebody is, perhaps, a little........disgruntled?

I'm Not, I think they all stink!

Well, at least we have a great Oldies Station. Of course, I'm a little biased.
Now if only we had an Active Rocker~!

I really don't know what to say at this point. Its pretty clear that the glass is always going to be half empty, as far as this group is concerned. I really don't want to get in a pissing match with dittohead, but again, I must say it seems odd that he can't stand the ztk morning show, yet he listens to it regularly. My question is.....why? thats the only point i was trying to make about his critiques.
The only other morning show I've heard occasionally is Wicker a few times, and it was kind of lame, with lots of self-directed giggling and not being all that witty. BUT thats no worse than what I've heard in other markets, even top the top 20.

Hey, I ain't mad atcha, son. It just seems to me that if I told you or someone like you I didn't like the AM show on ZTK, they would aske me why. If I answered "I dunno", they would tell me I don't know what I am talking about. Clearly, I do. I love radio just as you do and many of the people who post here. I can tell you something about most of the AM shows and a lot of the jocks in Greensboro AND in Raleigh. I don't know why knowing the subject makes me "bitter" or "disgruntled" (that's your name, remember?). I think it makes me knowledgeable. I don't get why that is a liability or weakness in your eyes.

I gotta chime in about the ZTK morning show. I used to think it sounded really right wing, now I think it reflects what most of the country thinks. I agree that they are equally willing to bash Bush and Hillary, and I've heard them say some good things about Ron Paul (a Libertarian), so I don't really think they can be classified as Liberal.....unless you think Rush Limbaugh is somewhere in the middle between Right Wing and Liberal. I think ZTK is doing a good job. I don't think they'll ever have huge numbers, mostly because of their lack of signal power in the Western part of the Metro. That doesn't mean they're not a station that can get great results for their clients. This market needed an FM Talk station and I think they fill the bill nicely.

Ditto to Mask Man. I really like the station and so do a lot of people I know. They bridge the gap between NPR and the am talkers and they have won me over. There is no way to predict ratings but Brad and Britt are the real deal. Chris and Chris are just djs. Brad and Britt make me think. To each his own but give those guys a break.

awright guys...but that 101.1 frequency would make a HELLACIOUS active rocker (as some of y'all have been clamoring for)...and it might even get better male numbers...just think about it...

You guys are missing the boat here...Have you not listened to the oh so talented Weather Dave Aiken????

Does anyone remember a couple of years ago when r92 was auditioning dave and his buddy (nom de air: will bastard) on sunday afternoons? It was horrible radio. I wish someone had the tapes. I think they were dangling that carrot in front of Dave that he could be the afternoon show. It was just atrocious.

Disgruntled,
You're a good guy. It ain't personal. You realize I never took one shot at you personally and I appreciate that you gave me the same courtesy. I enjoy reading your stuff on the board. Let's keep it light this holiday season. Everybody get happy!
