WHAT'S WITH ALL THE HALF PRICE DEALS?

The CC, Cumulus, Radio One and Entercom clusters have all been promoting these offers in Indy. And now I hear independent WTTS has their own deals out there. It seems like rather than selling ad time to clients, these stations are selling directly to their listeners. Is anybody having success with this type of program?

It depends on several factors:

1. Are the items being sold any good. Half priced tooth whitening certificates are easy for the station to get, but tough to sell.
2. Is someone in the cluster focusing on keeping the half price store stocked. Veteran sellers shouldn't be spending their time chasing after the owner of the all you can eat Chinese buffet at 38th and Mithoeffer.

You have to keep the store full with good items. This is not new, it has been around for years and years in a variety of markets. In smaller markets many stations do entire shows offering this type of merchandise, and many of those stations are very profitable.

That sounds about as tough as herding cats.

... so to speak.
