What's with B103 in Rockford?

What the heck is B103 doing in Rockford with this "on-air music test"? Do they not have the money to do one off air? Give me a break. We'll take the listeners!

I find it funny when "talent" (cough, cough) from other stations become so bothered by another stations business! :D
Do you feel threatened by a "lite rock" station sweetheart??

It's a similar move that's being done at B101 in Philadelphia. A pretty brilliant move, in my opinion. It's a way to connect with the audience and give them a feeling like they are participating in what happens. It's a whole lot better than just looking at some blabity blah research done by some company in California.

It has had great success in other markets and is actually pretty smart on their part. What a great way to show your listeners you care about their musical choices.

I do think it was a better marketing choice than a faux suspension on ZOK...circa Spring 2006 with Stone and Double T. Been there, done that.

Wow! I guess someone is feeling pretty insecure themselves to pick on other talent! Oh...did I mention that we are the #1 morning show in Rockford? Or maybe you forgot that didn't you? BTW, don't ever call me sweetheart.

Denise,

As a morning show host and MD, don't you have more to worry about than what B-103 is doing, and what "listeners" are posting on message boards?

How about concerntrating on making sure your own show/station doesn't suck.
(Thus, becoming the next object of Geek's radio hatred)

Ya know...I don't think it's really picking on her...she started this subject with full knowledge of what she was saying and the feedback she could receive. I also would like to make her aware that the ratings go up and down and I'm pretty sure Sean Henry and others have "whooped up" on the country station a couple times. I wouldn't get too comfortable on that high horse.

Dear Denise Pagano (aka MY Sweetheart) - First off honey, YOU are the person that started this post. Secondly darling, The MAIN talent of the morning show that you are a small part of, has had fantastic numbers LONG before you came along. Thirdly baby, I was NOT "picking" on you..I found your post quite funny like the majority of posts on this website, so I needed to include my part.
I hope you can relax, and understand that I love you snuggle-bunny!
Have a great day, beautiful.

Thanks again for the beautiful comment...I'll take it as such. I don't want this to be a fight...that wasn't my intent. That's not who I am quite frankly...so if it came off as such I'm sorry SlashsHat.
Just was curious on why they did what they did, that's all. You would never hear anything like that on Chicago radio which is where my career was until I came to Rockford.
Also,(just fyi) I know wholeheartedly I work with one of the most talented men in radio...and we are 50/50 partners on the show.

Guess someone needs to be the parent here......OK, enough going back and forth. I can tell you Denise that where I come from, the music test hasn't happened on-air either, so I am wondering how well they will do. When I noticed it in the paper, it was a little hard to read (yeah had to put on the glasses) and when I tuned in for a short time, it was a little hard to follow. But again, anyone hear if it went over well?

WBEB in Philadelphia is doing it. Top 10 market...

Yeah but you know what? People in top ten markets do stupid stuff too. Just because you're Rockford and they're Philly doesn't make them right and you wrong.

When I left Rockford for a much larger market, I was amazed at how different the standards were.

I'm not saying an on-air music test is lame... though it sounds lame to me. But even if it is, 103.1 always seemed to get away with lame crap. Some things never change.

Yes, but I still fail to see why this is so bad. The company probably isn't paying for a perceptual study. It probably isn't paying for a professional auditorium music test either. So, if a heritage station in a top 10 market that CAN afford all of the above to do something like this shows it's not just a stupid idea.

Nobody has yet to point out why this is such a bad thing other than "It's lame." To me it seems like a great way to connect with your audience and make them feel one with their radio station. This is even more important being it's a female-targetted station. Even if you don't use any of the information you get in it's still a good way to get a buzz generated about your station.

Well I haven't heard it. But if Denise says it's lame, I trust her. ;)

My last post was a bit unclear...when I said the standards were different.... I thought Rockford standards were HIGHER than some larger markets I had been to. My point was that it's not a good idea to say, "Well we're market 154 and they're market 7, so obviously everything they do is right."

Although the concept was done a few weeks ago in Philly I give B103 credit for trying something different!!! Although the idea was taken from market 7 for a market the size of Rockford this was probably the most creative thing done in Rockford radio in the six years I have been living here... I would love to see B get rid of some of the 70's stiffs that keep being played, but for the most part they are trying and for the most part are sounding pretty good and that is KEY!!! BTW who is PD'ing at B now... They had a new PD that came in and poof he was gone in no time... CC1

Yeah Justin was in and then out! Problem is Jay Chapman. Not a great GM and they have some other issues too like Jim Stone. He's a jock plain and simple. Not a great OM.

Maybe Justin can get in at ZOK after that hack "Jammer" gets blown out for sounding like an amature. He's just BAD! I predict a major drop for 97ZOK come the release of the fall numbers. Back down to a 7 share.
