What's with the no-tie thing

Since when do news anchors and sports guys these days go on the air without a tie?

What's worse is when you have these oldsters on the air with their turkey necks previously hidden by a collared shirt now with a tacky T-shirt!

I hate it! It looks so tacky and unprofessional.

The first time I saw this was Hawaii in the early 80s, when anchors still wore ties and those stupid blazers with the station logo. Anchors in Honolulu did the full coat/tie thing for the evening news, but always wore Hawaiian print short-sleeve shirts for the late news. It was jarring to see your favorite distinguished male anchor in a shirt with colorful flowers all over it.

Wow, thanks for joining us David Stern!
It's evident all over...no tie-wear. Personally I feel you can do your job just as well without a tie than with a tie. But, as TV being a visual, these anchors, news or sports, are still representatives of the company they work for and as much as I can't stand ties, it does look unprofessional.

Not only the no-tie look but now the blue jeans are showing up. For years, on-air staff was usually shot from the waist up or sitting at a desk. What they wore from the waist down did not matter much. But today's new directing style has people away from the desk, standing at the wall or sitting in a living room setting. We now see them in their blue jeans with shirt/tie/jacket or just the shirt and jacket.

It does look unprofessional.

FOX6 here in SD has all of their anchors and on-air people in very fashionable ties/suits/blazers and they have a real edge, IMHO.

KUSI-TV SD's independent station with some 6 hours of newscasts is looking very dogearred these days. Notwithstanding that they have not changed their news set since I can remember (they really don't have all that much room to play with), KUSI these days with its reporters and anchors looks more like a small public college TV station than its competitors....IMHO!

But the skin-tight tank tops and remarkable cleavage sported by most of the LA newsbabes is fine, isn't it?

If you swing that way.

>Funny you should mention that. I saw Leila Feinstein on KTLA when I was in LA about a year ago, and was amazed at how much Channel 5 had "babed her up" in comparison to her attractive but modest look on KRON in San Francisco. Perhaps its the difference between LA and the more politically correct Bay Area - or perhaps it's recognition of her budding star potential. At KRON, she was mostly a general assignment reporter.

LOL

I remember about a a year ago, they had some producer guy, from CNN, being interviewed about how FoxNews had higher ratings. He said something like "If we wanted higher ratings all we would have to do is put Bill Hemmer in a T-Shirt."

Well so much for THAT theory.
