What's With The Xmas Music Speculation?

Seems every year there are a number of posts from throughout the land speculating on when/if certain stations will start airing Christmas music. Since these seem to begin a bit earlier each year, as seem to be happening with retailers as well, I'm wondering why the radio community seems continually interested?

Not looking for an argument here (because I personally have nothing invested) and I understand that in certain markets (KESZ in Phoenix for example) the format switch for the holidays is a revenue/ratings enhancer but that can't be true in every market. Or is it?

It is. In general, except possibly where more than one station goes all Christmas music, the results are pretty uniform in that the audience doubles and the station is almost always #1 in the market for the duration.

Since the advent of the PPM in the top 50 markets and the delivery of 13 ratings books a year, the time has moved up to coincide with the December book, which is mid-November to Mid-december. In addition, the "Holiday" book includes the last week of this programming.

For retailers it seems the Christmas season starts November 1st and the shopping season begins on Black Friday. I guess some stations go Christmas early in hopes of being put on stores radios so they can reach a larger advertising audience. Besides that I cant see the reason for going Christmas before Thanksgiving. Most sane people aren't going to want to listen to Christmas music for over a month.

Some retail stores in Phoenix have been playing it over their PA systems since Halloween. Wal-Mart has had at least some Christmas decorations on the shelves here starting around Labor Day for years.

I like Christmas music as much as the next person, but save it until at least December 1st.
