What's wrong with Barry Manilow?

So many AC stations play disco, and yes, that includes "Copacabana" on at least one station I know of.

Perhaps the fans of "Don't Forget the Lyrics" are the wrong ones to ask. I find it amazing how many contestants on that show like him. And host Mark McGrath made the statement that "We're all fanilows."

At the same time, I suppose a corny show like that is not representative of the AC audience. These people seem to like everything (Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Ke$ha but also hard rock and alternative), which makes them more like fans of Jack, only with more disco and Motown and really old oldies and, yes, even the likes of The Carpenters.
 
The AC format targets people in their 30s and 40s - if you're in your 50s and 60s (and like Barry Manilow), you should probably be listening to Oldies

Oldies are, by definition, Rock n Roll. Manilow is not - no matter what your age.

In any case, there's no way he tests well with the current AC target audience

Both his old and new material fit the adult standards format.

He does seem to test well with contestants on "Don't Forget the Lyrics". And they're in their 20s and 30s for the most part. Maybe some are in their 40s.
 
You guys have apparently never been to a Barry Manilow concert. My wife dragged me to a few and there's more women in their 20s there than women in their 60s. The last concert, I was right in front of this woman, couldn't have been more than 25. Tattoos. Looked like your typical rocker. She was screaming and singing along to every Barry song. I kid you not. Manilow somehow attracts young people, too, despite his music. So I agree. Why not more Manilow on pop stations? He just came out with a new album of original music, by the way.
 
^Just cause he's got some younger fans doesn't mean Hot AC and CHR can play him - 80% of their listeners would change the station cause they couldn't stand listening to it
 
I was always a little bit repulsed by Barry Manilow. In high school everyone I knew referred to him as Barely Manenough.

I have read some accounts back in the 90s where shortwave pirate enthustiasts copied broadcasts
on a VERY strong nationwide signal, that seemed to be all Barry Manilow original recordings, except that
they were all unrealeased, never released recordings. There was agreement that the voice in the recordings was
Barry. or someone who could perfectly sing in the style and voice of Barry.

Either someone else has accesss to unreleased material, Or Barry is/was a pirate radio operator.

KISN sometimes ran some of his earlier, pre-Arista work during the late 1990s-early 2000's.
 
Getting back to "Don't Forget the Lyrics", to win $50,000 you need to choose to try the Encore Song. Or if you didn't make $10,000 in the first four rounds you can only double your money. Once you have chosen to go for it (which you must do before knowing what song it is), you have to get the lyrics right or you get only $1000 if you had $10,000 or nice parting gifts if you had less. You can't change your mind after finding out you were given a song you don't know.

So a woman chooses to go for it and the song is "Copacabana". Asked if she is a Fanilow, she is reluctant to admit it. Host Mark McGrath says it's all right. "You're in a safe place here."
 
Once in a while Renda's AC KMGL/Oklahoma City plays "Copacabana" on "Saturday Night Fever". This past Monday, "Copacabana" came up in their regular playlist around 12PM at noon.
 
On another "Don't Forget the Lyrics" episode, Mark McGrath said, "We're all Fanilows" to a contestant reluctant to admit she liked Barry Manilow.

By the way, I heard "Somewhere in the Night" this morning.
 
If any adult contemporary stations in your area play American top 40 the 70's on the weekend you can catch plenty of his songs on there. In the 70's top 40 radio wasn't so limited on music genres.

The last station I am aware of that did that was an oldies station which is now Christian. I don't think AC stations do this, though some do weekend gold shows.
