Whats wrong with KEES in Gladewater?

Their signal has been screwed up ever since Ike. They were off the air for a couple of weeks right after the storm, then, once they came back on their audio has bee unlistenable. I have a lot of respect for the way that Paul Gleiser runs his Tyler stations, however, I do not understand why a heritage station like KEES is being so neglected.

It is sad what has happened to the Longview AM dial - KLUE gone, KFRO relegated to a crappy audio quality simulcast, KEES seems to be on it's deathbed.

I don't know why the "boys" in Tyler think Longview is no longer a worthy sales market. I wish they'd unload KEES, KFRO-AM and KBGE if they are going to do nothing but simulcast what's on their Tyler stations in poor quality audio. I guess they think one day HD radio will save the day for AM radio...riiight... ::)

The only station that has improved greatly over the past year has been KWRD.

And they have no AM monitoring equipment in their Tyler studio so if an AM transmitter goes down they don't know it until someone calls them. Disappointing.

Gleiser Sells KEES in Gladewater

Looks like Gleiser has just sold KEES to the Rev. Darrell Martin for $100,000 cash, according to the FCC today.

Rev. Martin already owns KGLD-AM, which has a Black Gospel format. Not sure what he has planned for KEES.

He also owns AM stations in Baytown, Wharton, Beaumont, Austin, San Antonio and other places.

OK then, looks like black gospel may be coming to 1430. It may even be a simulcast of KGLD. Wonder if they will keep the heritage KEES calls?

There is a lot of history related to KEES/KSIJ. If you ever have some time to kill, do a google search on KSIJ Gladewater, and read the interesting stories related to Tom Perryman, Jim Reeves, and Elvis.

Does anyone know when the calls changed from KSIJ to KEES? I moved to Longview as a youngster in 1973, and they were KEES by that time, and still playing country music.

I doubt Rev. Martin will change KEES. Gleiser sold KGLD 1330 to him and he didnt change those calls. I hope he does well with the black gospel format in Longview.

I always thought it was kind of redundant for Glesier to own KESS when KTBB comes in so strong in Longview during the day and 1430's 1K night signal is just too weak to cover Longview.

I remember in downtown Kilgore the old Goodwill store had a old KEES sticker on the door. I believe during the 70's KEES was a country station. And I remember reading a story years ago in the Longview newspaper about KSIJ and how Elvis visited the station many times in the mid 50's when it was in that 3-4 story hotel.

Many Sun Records acts played Gladewater High School, and Carl Perkins debuted "Blue Swede Shoes" there.

Even before the current signal problems, KEES gets wiped out in most parts of Longview at night by 1430 from Tulsa.

The old KEES studio building on Hwy 80 between White Oak and Gladewater is still there - but it looks like it is a private residence now.

It's even worse trying to hear KEES outside of Longview during twilight now that KTBZ-AM in Tulsa got a 20K upgrade a few years ago.

Gleiser would be better off trying to buy KFRO-AM to get nighttime coverage for KTBB, if they ever put in a good transmitter with loud Optimod proccessing equipment in there.

When I drove by the old KEES studios yesterday they had a "for sale" sign out front.

(My apologies to the admin if its against board policy for bumpstarting an old topic again)

Any news about KEES? It's been off the air for over a month. Did the sale go through or are they having technical problems?

On the other hand, KDOK 1240 sounds great.
