What's wrong with WMJC?

Reviewing the latest PPM results in the thread below, I was wondering why this station just can't seem to find a significant following on the Island. Their current 12+ share of 0.9, I believe, is the lowest since they flipped from country in 2000. They have a pretty decent morning show with Fathead, Jon Daniels is a great PM drive host and knowledgable PD, Rob Rush is a talented jock with a great voice heard on literally dozens of the ad spots, Malibu Sue is a heritage personality in this market and the music mix, occupies the area between WALK & WKJY on the one side and WBLI and Party 105 on the other. My only thought is that since the ACs and CHRs tend to score so high, there just isn't anyone left for this Hot AC.

I think they're just going up against too many similar Hot AC and AC stations. WALK, Lite, PLJ, Fresh, co-owned K-Joy, and so many other stations from CT, eastern LI, etc. all overlap with WMJC musically to a large extent. WMJC's signal is also among the worst on the island, and gets torn up even in its primary contour by WYBC from Connecticut. Even with heritage personalities like Malibu Sue, I think the station is far too limited musically, especially compared to, say, Malibu Sue's old home, WLIR.

That said, I'm pretty sure they've been even lower than an 0.9 several times, especially with the diary method. I'm pretty sure I've seen them get 0.7 and 0.8's in recent years, maybe even an 0.6 once but I'm not sure.

For January-June 2009, here's WMJC's 6+ overall shares per month (all in PPM ratings methodology):

0.9 - 0.9 - 1.2 - 1.3 - 1.2 - 0.9

Who cares about 6+ and 12+? How do they do in their demos? Barnstable still has the lights on, so they must be making some money.

the signal is tough and the area that has a great signal is serviced by many stations with the same exact format. So why listen to static when you can listen to Walk, Wplj, Wltw, Fresh, Star out of CT, I can go on and on. PPM tells no lies. with the diary method, someone can write down MJC and listen to something else. can't lie with ppm

From that list, I would only consider WPLJ as their closest format competition (Hot AC). Some of the others on that you cite, ie the mainstream acs, are going for older demos with shows like Delilah, and playing currents every 4-5 songs.

I agree with you Mike when you micro the formats, but you have to agree that all that I mention are going Female 35+, and that's MJC. No 25-34 year old is going to MJC. Party owns the 18-34, BLI is a little older, and then you have a slew of them going after 35+. Fact of the matter is the signal is bad and you can hear the same stuff on numerous outlets in the area. That with the PPM is the kiss of death for a so-so station.

I have to disagree when it comes to talent. MJC sounds like the land of misfit toys. Phathead has nothing to say, even his jokes sound scripted. Jon Daniels needs to slow down or work Top 40, Rob Rush needs some inflection in that "great voice", Malibu Sue sounds tired and needs to talk over the music, not under it.
