Just curious... I know that is a saltwater path for you. I've very clearly heard all the NYC biggies on the Outer Banks of NC on my car radio at noon. What kind of rig & antenna are you using at Daytona Beach? A beverage antenna????

I've heard WOR on Bermuda mid-day on a mini-portable (Tecsun PL-606) which I would estimate about 800 miles--all over saltwater..

Nope - unassisted GE Superadio 2. They weren't the strongest, but they were there. Understand that the barrier island was only two blocks wide at the location I lived, and my house was on the intercoastal waterway.
 
In the past, I have heard WLW, WJR, WSM, WHAM in northern VA, all with very weak signals. On the Outer Banks, I have heard NYC stations, WTIC in Hartford, and on the southern NC coast, I have heard WOKV Jacksonville, FL.

The barrier island of Daytona Beach is much wider at the area where I did my DXing near the beach.

Just that little difference in being surrounded bu saltwater can make a big difference in reception.

Here on the west coast, I get noticeably better daytime reception of distant AM stations out on Honeymoon Island (which is thin and well isolated from the mainland by a lot of water) than I do on Clearwater Beach.

Anyone who is ever on the west coast of Florida should really check it out Honeymoon Island. It's worth the few bucks to get on there.

one "block" north of Dunlawton on Venetian Circle. I really wish I could try again from that location - DX was amazing!
 
I tried from Ponce Inlet 2 years ago, w/ GE Supe II & Select-a-Tenna. Really tried for WCBS, but only WZAB showed. Maybe I shoulda tried 6 years earlier.

Twas August 1969 and I was in Clearwater, on vacation, staying with my buddy (a DXer from Long Island) and pitching some form of 20-year old's woo with a gal in Largo (also from Long Island originally).

The cheesy Philco transistor radio I had in tow was laughable (and probably unphotographable). Yet, during the day, there was WJOE from Port St. Joe -- 1080 or 1060? -- on what was maybe 1000 watts.

At night, the glorious must-listen was the R&B KYOK Houston 1590. Wow, what a playlist. 'Midnight Hour' by the Mirettes and 'Stay With Me' by Lorraine Ellison remain indelible favorites to this day.

Where my pal Rodj lived was maybe a good two miles inland, off the Gulf. Maybe there was augmented water-path reception provided by thousands of beer-can empties in the yard.

I looked at the map and the barrier island is almost three times as wide there as where I was which could have made a difference.

Did you hear anything at all weaker in the background behind WZAB or even the fluttering sound I did?

On Honeymoon Island during the day, I got the 1kw WSHO from New Orleans with a listenable signal and an ID...

@Steve Green NEPA---WJOE is no longer. Was at Cape San Blas FL in July, not far from Port St Joe; the 1080 I heard was Radio Cadena Habana in Cuba, in the day :)

@Gar---If I heard anything at all under WZAB, which was faint to begin with, it wasn't worth reporting. I thought that being along the beach would help.

Could you PM me with the best Google Map link? I might try again in Feb.

I don't know how close it was to noon, but the best daytime DX I've logged, i.e. early afternoon or closest to noon, was KUGN 590, Eugene OR from my location here in W Washington. KUGN is about 250 miles away. It was during the 1980's, either on a boombox or old GE TRF transistor radio.

CJDC is a regular nightly visitor in Puget Sound. The farthest northern signal you can get in most areas. Weirdest damn format ever in 1991. I once heard "Against The Grain" Garth Brooks segue into "Looking For A New Love" Jody Watley.....
 
Heard today at noon EST on car radio in NE NC. WGN 720 @ 725 miles and WSM 650 @ 580 miles. Nothing unusual heard on high end of the band.
 
Sometimes I can get KTKN 930 in Ketchikan, AK. They air mostly Hot AC.

In the Charleston area: 820 Tampa a readable copy almost all year. Over 375 miles. Water path consistently gives us 760 and 640 from West Palm Beach plus 610, 670, 710 Miami, and 560 mixes with the closer Columbia station. Other stations would be audible on a better radio. This is every day reception even in the summer.

The Miami stations are 475-480 miles.

CMCA is the farthest. Comes in every day on car radio. Over 700 miles, all over water. I can hear the ticking clock every day.

In land, I've gotten WSM two or three times, and WSB used to be a constant daytime reception a few years ago. Now it comes in only during the winter.
 
I have to update my daytime DX 'record' -- this afternoon about 12:50 p.m. I switched on my Realistic DX-350A and tuned around to see what I could hear. I used my Select-A-Tenna, curious to see if any daytime DX was present.

To my surprise, I heard both CFFR, Calgary (660 khz) (440 miles) and CBK, Watrous, SK (540 khz) (800 miles); both stations were clearly readable with a Select-A-Tenna, but both stations also came in barefoot with mostly readable signals.

I also got KBOI-670 khz, Boise, ID (400 miles) with grainy sounding reception. Obviously the propagation was working more towards the north from my location in Western WA.

I hadn't tried the daytime DX thing before, I guess sometimes you never know what you'll hear.

This is the best time of year to try MW daytime DX as the days are the shortest. Keep at it, December is prime time.

I could hear KGDD under KKXA on 1520 in Bellingham, WA yesterday. And I heard a talker under KBRC (not sure if it was KCLK, KYKN or even KLO.)

I'm also starting to hear some scattered Part 15s here and there in the X-Band (1630 and 1640 seem to be fairly busy.) Some running Alex Jones, others Christmas music. Well worth a leisurely weekend drive around Puget Sound.....
