What's YOUR Favorite AD (or radio) Jingle?

Good article....I would guess probably over the years---Coca Cola jingles seem to have pretty good staying power with me.....so many great infecteous jingles over the years that became a part of our culture......

Honorable mentions to McDonalds.....

And now jingles for radio probably the greatest......has to be the one and only
"KJR Seattle Channel 95......" Anyone who grew up here HAS to remember those.....I do remember some others---like the top of the hour KVI Jingle........"KVI..Seattle"....into their news sounder that sounded like an intrumental version of their jingle back in the 60's. Remember that well with Bob Hardwick and Roall Erickson in the morning. And I do remember some of the KING/1090 jingles as well from the 60's and 70's.
______________
Your Spokane & Seattle Radio Pal..and Seattle Moderator...

J.J. Hemingway

When I lived in Eastern Washington, Pullman, WA always seemed to have the most jingles. I'd say 95% of the commercials on stations out there are jingles and they all are freakin catchy as hell for some reason. I hate to do this, but Meyer's Auto Rebuild and Towing...this one is for you...

"Meyer's Auto Rebuild and Towing, where service is no accident....Accidents happen, yes its true...and if one ever happens to you. We'll get your car back the way it was...it'll look like new, it's true because....We're Meyer's Auto Rebuild and Towing, where service is no accident"

Glad to get that outta my system

"Do you know the muffler man, the muffler man, the muffler man... do you know the muffler man- Dan Fast is his name!"

And the one I miss the most every holiday season: "Merry Christmas, from PayLess, Merry Christmaaaaaas!"

The "old skool" KJR jingles are on top of most peoples' lists. I also liked the old KUBE jingles from the 80's.
______________

I echo both of those sentiments. Those jingle packages were both good stuff.

On the flip side, I threw items at the radio when I heard those Bon Marche jingles ripping off "The Banana Boat Song." That got old REAL quick.

Of course, who could forget the flood of live Nutri-System spots in the late 80s?

"Oh with the rap of a hammer (tap tap tap tap)
And just a little bit more (tap tap tap tap)
Washington Builders (tap tap tap tap)
Will make your old home look like it never did before
Washington Builders (tap tap tap tap)
Call Sunset three two four oh four!"

I haven't heard that in close to 40 years but it's still stuck in my brain.

I'll always recall the old SEAFIRST BANK radio dittie:
(starts with banjo plucks going into a choir with strings)

"It started back in eight-teen seven-ty, Dexter Horton was his name...
..look for it first - Se-att-le First"

then an announcer cuts-in:

"For something new in banking - (loud falling clang sfx)
- look for it first!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The 'Washington Builders' jingle was a standout also:

"With just a rap of a hammer (rappa-tap-tap)..and just a little bit more..
Wash-ing-ton Buil-ders (same sfx) will make that old place look like it never did before"...
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Still trying to find ANY of the "You Get Alot to Like with a Marlboro"
orchestrated jingles from the 50's and 60's.

NOT the ones where Julie London sings, but the splendid instrumental versions -
- in tempos ranging from 'soft and beautiful' to 'fast and conga'...

Very rare to find, since they were originally produced on medium-sized '78' RPM vinal records -
I was only a child of 5 when we had a neighbor that moved to
Seattle from New York who used to work for Phillip Morris over there -
- loaning us one of these special records...

There's one version I recall with a seductive SAXAPHONE solo that I've just GOT to hear again...

It's amazing how some of these things stick in your head. Especially numbers for me. We all know that 02134 is the zipcode for Boston, Mass.

The telephone number that will always remain in my head comes from TV spots that ran during the daytime in the 70s and early 80s (remember being sick in bed and staying home from school watching them).

So, trivia -- what company had the phone number 623-7713?

I've only been in Wa since 1980

But I still remember the WABC jingle, from when I was growing up...

Seventy Seven....double U A...B...C.....back when it was Cousin Brucie (Bruce Murrow(Marrow?) and Scot Muni (Who later went on to that horrible terrible underground music on FM at a nothing station WNBC FM...LOL)....
I think that was WNBC 102.5?

The KJR jingle referenced above reminds me of that 70's style of positioner.

Most, at least radio, jingles of late are insipid.

The State Roofing spot....Roof Roof Roof Roof..I envision this army of Lunchbucket Joes marching down the street like the flying monkeys from Wizard of Oz when they're walking into the Wicked Witch of the West's castle.

Geico's radio spots suck...who elimated the middle man? Good grief.

One of those that does stick though...is the Kiel Mortgage jingle.
At least you never forget the phone number!!!

> > And the one I miss the most every holiday season: "Merry
> > Christmas, from PayLess, Merry Christmaaaaaas!"

The PayLess Christmas jingle was so infectious, I can remember not being able to drive past a PayLess without singing that jingle to myself.. in March.

I have to disagree that the jingle is dead though. I think it is more a case of advertisers not wanting to invest in a good jingle, leaning toward fancy special effects or, as the article mentions, licensed music. Some folks out there are still using the jingle and using it well. My 5 year old neice can belt-out without blinking an eye:

"800, 800, 8553!" or "Da-Da Da, Da Da, I'm lovin' it"

Anyone down in Oregon, or who spent more than a week in Oregon, could probably chime-in with you on a "George Morlan Plumbing, the water heater king!"

I think it's just a matter of an advertiser being committed to a campaign. Commitment, is something that is very lacking in advertisers these days.

How about favorite commercials in general, with or without jingles?

I love the Bud Light, "Real American Genius" campaign.
______________

I recall the channel 11 jingle...

"Kay Ess Teeee, Washingtoooon"

i think of that jingle with the Christmas in the Northwest song too.
______________

"Da-Da Da, Da Da, I'm lovin' it"

Cute story:

A buddy has a 5 year old son who loves McD's. He sang the little jingle in the restaurant. My buddy's response: "Da-da da, da da, I'm HATING it." To which the little guy responded again, "Da-da da, da da, BUT YOU'RE EATIN' IT!"

Sorry... just had to share.

Oh yeah, I remember that one. How about "...And like a good neighbor State Farm is there"? Here's a jingle from the early days of KCPQ(off topic), "Take another look at channel 13, KCPQ".
______________

I have a bunch of boxes ... maybe William Tanner but I don't remember for sure. The slogan on the box = "No one ever hums the announcer". It has composites of those older campaigns....will see if any of the Marlboro series are on there....

Coke, Pepsi and Dr. Pepper always stood out in my mind as best jingles because they got you so jazzed (though Coke often more emotional and visual, as in the "I'd Like to Teach the World" campaign). Behind that ... the beer jingles. "Weekends were Made..." or "Here's to Good Friends...tonight is kind of special..."

One thing that intrigues me is A-Busch. Bud Light spots are always funny and brilliantly creative ... but other bud brands are things like "True" and about quality, horses with big .... feet and so forth. Clearly the agency has done homework about which consumers are drawn to which brands. Always find that a fascninating case of agency not just recommending "you should always be funny" or whatever.

And ... LOVE that story about the 5-year old & McDonalds!!

And agree that Jingles are dang effective ... even today. People saying they are "dead" are simply saying "we don't want to spend the money to make it work". Fred Meyer jingles are probably still on people's, uh, list today...??
