WHAZ-FM, HOOSICK FALLS,NY GOES SILENT

WHAZ-FM, 97.5 Hoosick Falls, NY has applied to the FCC (6/19/13) to go silent. The equipment has already been removed from the site on Mt. Anthony in Bennington, VT. The religious broadcaster, Capital Media Corp. took this action after the landlord significantly raised the tower rental. The Alive Radio network as it is known simulcasts on WHAZ-AM 1330. Troy,NY, WMYY 97.3, Schoharie, NY, WBAR, 94.7, Lake Luzerne, NY, WMNV, 104.1, Rupert, Vt. and on 3 low power translators in the White River Junction area of Vt. WHAZ-FM was part of this simulcast. It is not known whether or not another TX site has been identified, but up to a year is allowed to get it back on the air.

Ouch. That does stink. I wonder if the landlord had another tenant lined up?
I wonder if Capital notified their customers.

If the landlord does have another tenant, it probably won't be a full power broadcast station, at best maybe a translator. It more likely would be 2-way radio systems and/or wireless internet. If not, the landlord thought the tenant probably would "bite the bullet" because of the amount of work there is to move a station between finding a new site, getting zoning approvals if necessary, FCC approvals, engineering, and the overall cost of a move.

Good....this will significantly improve the coverage for 97.7-WEXT.....

I wonder if this affords them (WEXT) the opportunity to raise power?

Negative. As noted in my column this morning, WHAZ-FM is only temporarily silent amidst a rent dispute with their landlord on Mount Anthony. They're applying for STA to return quickly to their former site in Grafton, and will eventually file to relicense there.

Even if Capital were for some reason to decide to shut down WHAZ-FM for good, the 97.5 allocation in Hoosick Falls would still be on the books and protected. And even if it weren't, the Amsterdam allocation is very tightly wedged in against co-channel signals in Hyde Park and adjacent channels in Windham and elsewhere. Hard to see any way to get it beyond a class A.

It is my understanding that WHAZ was looking at their former site in Grafton.(I learned of this on Monday) That site in which the tower still stands with a pair of shively's on it is not in the best shape. I have seen it every time I go by there to service a 2-way radio site that is close by. Brian Larsen NE Gospel, has a translator on 97.5 in Albany. WRIP, Windham has a 97.5 translator in northern Greene county. I wonder how they will be impacted as the TX site at Grafton for WHAZ-FM would end up closer to them?

AND when they file for Grafton, will the facility be as it was, before.

Back when Northeast Gospel owned this, the Grafton site was an on-channel booster. It has not been licensed or on air in years. Was it the original TX site before it was moved to Mt Anthony? A couple of years ago I was on Mt Anthony and the antenna was pretty much a single bay in a radome mounted on a telephone pole. Can't imagine the rent was that much!

Did WHAZ get the booster site as part of the original sale? Where is it exactly ? Berlin Mountain?

How will this impact WEXT east of Troy? Not positively :'(

The Grafton site is on Babcock Lake road perhaps a mile north of Rt. 2 on the east side. It is just before a huge amateur radio installation which is on the west side of the highway from Rt. 2. The Mt. Anthony site is a large wooden platform. It is rotting and unsafe. It is being torn down and space was available on the tower next to it. It seems that the tower ownership has changed and has decided to raise the rent. The position on the tower offered was to low and unsatisfactory as well.

Very informative! Yes - that platform looked like it was in very poor shape a couple of years ago, I can imagine it is worse now.

on Google maps you can see what looks like a tower and perhaps two orange radomes here: +42° 46' 56.47", -73° 25' 5.77"
is that it? How high is that site?

Translators are secondary. If a translator interferes with a licensed site's protected contour it must reduce power or change frequency. If those aren't enough it must go dark.

I doubt that there will be any interference.

WHAZ-FM has applied for an STA to use the existing site and non-directional antenna at reduced power until a new directional antenna can be acquired.

American Tower has photos of their sites, and they apparently own the site of the former booster. Check out some pictures of the site here:

It looks like the only thing on the tower is the former WNGN-FM2 antenna. Has WHAZ been paying rent for this site all of these years and not using it?

Why are they required to be directional from this site but not Mt Anthony? Is that to protect 97.7 WEXT?

Shively 2 bay.....

Aux tower for WHAZ?

It used to be the on channel booster for 97.5 back when it was owned by WNGN and later Telemedia, when it was WZEC. It was the original TX site for 97.5 prior to moving to MT. Anthony. Weird they would use one bay up there and keep this one dormant.m

Guessing that WHAZ has been paying rent for the site but not using it.

Normally, you'd only do that if it was listed as the Auxiliary site. If so, you could sign it on, immediately.

I looked up the STA. Hard to believe that they'll have that much coverage with only 110 watts.

OK, slightly off-topic, but the headline "Hoosick Falls Goes Silent" makes me chuckle. I grew up in that town and it has been silent for at least fifty years. LOL
