WHBC-FM Format Flip

I'm sure Jstew and Co would prefer we talk about them bringing Deluca for the morning show, but it appears on Saturday night WHBC changed formart...to ALL PSA's!
Right after the legal ID at 7pm it went into an hour long loop of endless PSA's rather than the Tom Kent Show.

Now before you say it could happen to anybody, you should know this is the THIRD weekend in a row it's happened.

Maybe they were busy finding Bon Jovi Tickets. ;)

Something needs to fix the automation at Mix. That can't be good.

Speaking of flip...what happened with those B94.1 rumblings?

DeLuca on Mix would be a shock! Though I do think he would help put the WDJQ morning show to rest.

Personally, I think it's a brilliant move for Mix 94.1 to bring in all of the people from Alliance that they used to kick the living crap out of in The Book.

Just. Brilliant.

I guess the fact that this board isn't lighting up about the Deluca acquisition just proves how little anyone cares about the WHBCs anymore. Personally, I love the idea of My. Potty Humor trying to keep himself contained for the mom audience. What a disaster.

This is going to be a train wreck of epic proportions..here's how this shakes out..

You have one half of the morning show who walked out on Q92 in the middle of an airshift a few years ago, working for the PD who was too weak to prevent it from happening...meanwhile, you've hired a guy who was told by the same program director that he was going to be the next Howard Stern, trying to relate to women 25-54 without going overboard...

What's the over under on this train wreck?

How would you like to have to sell this?

When WHBCs audience gets wind of this, how many are going to stick around? If you're at My101, you have to be popping corks...your primary competition is slicing its own wrists..

Why not leave Kathy Vogel, who is at least a pro at what she does, alone in the studio and do a more music morning show? Why does commercial radio continue to insist that we have to suffer through boy/girl, faux sexual tension, dumb guy, smart girl morning shows?

Anyone noticed that McDonalds and Home Depot are spending more and more money with Spotify this Summer? Anyone still wondering why?

...and to think that the experts worried about Hunter Scott being the bad boy at Mix all those years ago. Unless Deluca's humor evolves significantly (and quickly!) I don't see the core audience hanging around for long. Chalk up another victory for My 101.7.

Just read the open letter in its entirety..

So NextMedia, in its infinite wisdom, is going to allow their new morning hire to directly compete against the very operation that is paying him what I would assume is a relatively healthy salary..

This is just too funny...Denver must be so absolutely desperate...or Stewart is telling what's left of that operation whatever it wants to hear...hilarious on so many levels..

Good for DeLuca to totally fleece the hand that feeds him...and to get them to agree to it..at least he has something to return to when this ends in a few months..

I don't think this is a bad move for them.

For anybody that still believes the old WHBC is around---sorry those days are over, and honestly, good. So tired of looking back. Those days ain't coming back. Neither are cart machines or Bill Chambers, Ted Boyd or Ray Hexamer.

Canton likes train wrecks of epic proportions. For example: The Hall of Fame festival has been the same mess for 30 years. They like two unorganized poorly operated marathons. They re-elected a goofy mayor who thinks he's Buford T. Justice.

I didn't see anyone here invoking the names of former GM's, but since you suggested it, I'll add another name: Rich Bossler. Who are we forgetting? Bueller? Anyone?

Change can be good, and change can be bad. While it remains to be seen whether Deluca will help Mix regain its standing in the market, it's clear that change has not been kind to the former Beaverkettle properties. When financial considerations forced NextMedia to trim staff and many elements of local programming, it went against audience expectations. The ratings for both stations dipped accordingly. Some of the changes, such as 1480's flip to news/talk, should have been made years earlier...but that's water under the bridge.

I can still see DeLuca making an impact at Mix. He's got a following that is still big, even after he left Q92. Time will tell if he and Kathy will click, which I personally think they will.

His following is Q92's Demo, which is 12-34...primarily male..is that demo going to listen to a toned down (allegedly) version of him on the station that their Mom might like? That's the larger issue here..you're serving him up to a demo that will likely reject him, as Mix skews 25-44..that's the issue here...

Don't take this the wrong way, but with a name like "Speaker of Truth", you are not speaking it.

Deluca was solid in 25-54, especially WOMEN 25-54. In the fall of 2011 (his last book) he was
#1 Women 25-54.
#3 Women 35-64
Women 25-44? Yeah #1 there too.
And
#1 Persons 25-54.

If that were true (and we have to take your word on it, but still: the shares had to have been small and razor thin), where else were they gonna go? Wasn't 2011 about the time Gary Rivers was beating the crap out of family members and Mix 94.1 was (and still IS) shaking off the Mike Myer....er, Hunter Scott poop-stew mess after their, what, 3rd or 4th PD in the same amount of years?

You don't hire all of the people you used to hand their asses to to make yourself a success again. It would be like hiring the cast of the original Battlestar Galactica to reboot the Star Wars franchise. Mediocrity at best. Huzzah.

The numbers are real and in some demos he was beating the nearest competitor by 3, 4 even 5 shares. That is not razor thin.

I realize many of you think he's not the real deal, and WHBC will always be the Super K era WHBC, reality is in a different place than your perception.

I see so much negativity on John Stewart and DeLuca, yet what you don't realize is that DeLuca had and has a following. It's interesting how many people here complain about the two mentioned above and complain about Donnie and company, will you give anyone a break or are you playing arm-chair PD again?

I think some of that is jealously that DeLuca had been able to have success with Q92 than shows before and after him. Who knows? I do wish him and JStew success at 94.1.

I have had thoughts if Kayleigh ever leaves, maybe Angela or perhaps Nikolina from Q heads over to the midday spot. (I wonder if Nikolina would rather work with John and DeLuca than with who she's with now in Alliance.)

I have often thought Angela would eventually move into mid-days on WHBC. What people here posting unknown is that NextMedia is not the same NextMedia it was a few years ago. It's corporate entity is partially contolled by interests including OakTree.

There was mention of OakTree folding the assets of NextMedia into Townsquare, which partially makes sense on why Cumulus didn't dump their Saginaw properties on Townsquare.
