WHBO is back...but not where you'd expect

Genesis is bringing back the WHBO call letters, but only as a sort of change from WLVU, which, according to this item, has substituted "Sports Radio 1470" for "ESPN 1470", and is bringing back Tony Bruno, who's now on Sporting News Radio.

It's on page 2 of the Tampa Tribune's sports section, but, for some oddball technical reason, is not on their website.

Well, it was some fun listening while it lasted. Bruno brings nothing new to the table. Same ol crap day after day.

Does anyone find it strange that the "WHBO" call letter talk and the history of those calls to Tampa Bay radio appears on this board on suddenly Genesis changes one of it's stations to them? It sure looks to me like someone wants to use calls letters historically attached to this market as a way to maybe grab a few more diary mentions. First it was Genesis a few years ago assigning the "WWBA" call letters to 1040... Then Cox keeping the "WSUN" calls on 97.1 and most recently it was Salem keeping the WGUL calls on 860. What's next, WYNF on 102.5? Ha ha ha... (I know, they're on an FM in Macon.) Actually, if they weren't used spmewhere they would probably help "The Bone"! Anyway, my point is.... quit trying to get a few extra BS entries in diarys and put some better programming on. I could care less what your call letters are. WLVU or WHBO? Same station. Same crap.

bruno brings nothing to the table?

gee, if that is a correct premise, who does bring anything "to the table."

i listen to xm radio during the day (there's a valid reason why local radio is dying) and bruno is one of the many i listen to daily (tony kornheiser being another). bruno is fantasic. at least good enough for xm radio.

light years better than that dope ron diaz. how diaz keeps a job on sports radio, i do not know. at least he's a step above that radio prostitute paul porter.

The valid reason that local radio is dying is that most owners want a quick buck, and don't have the knowhow to find those who will cultivate local talent.
If you think that Tony Bruno and his ilk are the reason local radio is dying, you really should take a closer look at the business.

And by all means, take him and Kornheiser TO the bird. If you are actually willing to pay MONEY to hear them, then what else do you like? Maybe I can sell you something else just as worthless.

Uh oh..sounds like somebody got dissed by Ronnie..maybe back in the day he didn't give you a 95YNF bumper sticker or something, lol...

Get over it......

PersonallY I agree with the original poster, I'm glad to be able to hear Bruno again. I find him far more entertaining than Colin Cowherd, whose ESPN show he replaces here, or Ron and Ian, who I'd describe as two guys pretending to know enough about sports to do a show (can't question Canadian Bacon on football knwoledge, but that's it for him, and Diaz is exposed as basically a fan with limited knowledge when he's got to do sports 3 hours a day, as opposed to drifting into the topic from time to time on a general morning drive show).<P ID="signature">______________

I'm also glad to hear Bruno back on the air. Kinda like the shot he takes
at DAE on one of the promo vignettes ("The Animal is dead..."). Some obser-
vations I have to make, however.

1) While WHBO is attempting to make a serious run at the Animal, I do have to
question how viable such a run can be considering the advertising pull the
Animal rakes in through CC, not to mention WHBO's rather weak signal (anywhere
east of downtown Tampa, good luck picking up a strong signal).

2) While Tony Bruno is wildly popular among sports radio listeners, he's sure
done some bouncing around lately. From ESPN to DAE to Fox Sports Radio to
Sporting News Radio. All in a span of six years.

3) WHBO has no weekday local hosts (you can't really count Terry Bowden and
Daniel Dobb[sp?], they simulcast their show from Orlando to both here and
Cocoa Beach).

4) Local sports radio is dying. Been that way since Mr. Christian Thomas
Olrick (God rest his soul) left us. I barely listen to the Animal anymore.
Dan Sileo as well as Ron and Ian are the primary reasons. In fact, I think
the two best sports talk hosts in this region aren't working right now (at
least that I know of)... Todd Wright and the Fabulous Sports Babe.
