WHDH Affiliation

Uh, that's never going to happen, since WBZ is OWNED by CBS!

The only way WHDH is not a powerhouse with NBC, is on this message board. Where people with absolutley no knowledge of the broadcast industry make such wild predictions and such wild accusations that those who do work in the industry just laugh. While a couple of people on here do not like WHDH's news, calling it all sorts of things like 'tabloid 7' and other silly things, the FACT remains, WHDH is a power house in Boston. It has very large cable coverage and a VHF Hi signal, which in this day and age is, a preferred band to be in.

To the best of my knowledge, here is how I understand it:

WHDH was Channel 5, WNAC 7 and WBZ was NBC.
Then came the 1970s...

WHDH lost their TV license, and MetroMedia took over 5, making it WCVB. Channle 5 was ABC, and 7 became CBS.

WNAC (wich was owned by WRKO's Parent, RKO General), and 7 became WNEV, whih was part of New England Television, owned by the Joseph Mugar, creator of Purity Supreme and Staples. Somehow, WHDH AM and Channel 7 were briefly merged, when Mugar bought WHDH. Then WHDH AM was sold off, became WEEI (which moved from 590).

Than, some time in late 80s, he sold to Ed Ansen, who owned the Sunbeam bread company. Ansen already owned WSVN in Miami. Now, WHDH TV was back on the air, but on a different freqeuncy and network entirely.

Early 90's, Westinghouse and CBS began their merger, with CBS buying out Group W's stations, and then Westinghouse bying CBS. WBZ took over CBS, and 7 was given a choice between NBC and Fox. But since WFXT was operated by Fox, Ansen got stuck with NBC (in Miami, he got the Fox contract).

NBC is very happy with WHDH TV. Channel 7's News is way atop the local news ratings. Also, just before WBZ went with CBS, NBC closed their Boston beureau there, so I think the WHDH folks are pretty happy too.

Scott Fybush is pretty close to the WBZ situation, so he probably knows the details better than I do. You can read also about this stuff at the following links:

http://www.bostonradio.org/stations/1912.html

So, to answer your question...
No, WHDH will (probably) not switch to ABC anytime soon, and DEFINATELY not CBS, unless theres a frequncy swap, like what happened in Miami between NBC and CBS with 6 and 4, and you can read about that one here: http://cbs4.com/info

Not quite sure what you are referring to, however when I was out visiting a friend of mine's house in Waltham, he had no cable tv, and picked them up off air with rabbit ears just fine...

Same year as Tim Russert's contract with NBC - 2012.

They have a contract with WHDH.

Some wife swapping going on up in NH and Maine, but that's about it.

I ddin't even know Sunbeam Bread and Sunbeam Broadcasting are the same company. All this time, I thought they were separate.

It was WCVB was operated locally first, then was sold to Metromedia in '81, IIRC.

I think Mugar was involved with Star Market, actually. Also, WHDH did last a few years under ownership of American Radio Systems (ARS) before WEEI moved to 850.

WFXT was actually owned by the Boston Celtics at the time, as News Corp. owned the Herald at the time and was not allowed to own both. Fox bought the station in 1987 from CBN, then sold it in 1990. When the Herald was sold to Purcell in 1995, Fox re-acquired WFXT from the Celtics.

Fox actually lost out twice on getting VHF affilates in Boston: In the mid-80's, Metromedia sold all of its TV stations to Fox except for WCVB, which went to Hearst. Then, in 1994, WHDH made the obvious choice to go with NBC vs. Fox.

(and WSVN was Miami's NBC affiliate until 1989, and was unrelated to the Group W flops. WSVN has never really publicized the Fox affiliation all that much; most promos and positioning is around the news operation.

NBC is incredibly happy with WHDH; so much that they would love to buy the station. The news ratings are impressive considering the state of NBC's prime time lineup.

In 1981, we were living in the Northgate Gardens Condominiums complex near Tropello Road, near the Waltham Lexington Line (Wal-Lex), and we could not get Channel 7 on either of the TV sets in the condo. We had two Black and White TVs in the house, a Small Yellow RCA, and a 20 in Zentih built sometime in the late 60's or early 70s. Most days, we were lucky if we could get Channel 7 on the Zenith.

So I would tend to guess that Channel 7's signal has some troubles in Parts of Waltham. Of course, they could have had a transmitter upgrade or frequency upgrade since 1981, in which case, there may not be a problem anymore.

Of course, they are distributed to cable stations via satellite, and also available to all ExpressVu viewers. Apparently, Maritime systems chose WHDH because they relate to them more than the other NBC channels via satellite (especially Detroit's WDIV), and they are stronger in content than the lower-market WLBZ.

I Live In Rhode Island and WHDH comes in perfect. Of course... I have a Good roof antenna... but that's beside the point. I Love WHDH. I often tune into their News at 4. It's a Quality Broadcast that I enjoy. I am also a big fan of FOX 25 News at 10 which happens to be another station that has a Good signal where I live. However neither WHDH or WFXT is carried on COX Cable in Rhode Island. Thank God for my Roof Antenna!

I never had any trouble with channel 7's over-the-air signal in any of the (four) places around Waltham where I lived from 1990-1997.

In fact, the signal was strong enough to be a real annoyance when trying to watch 7 on Waltham Cable (later TCI of Waltham), since they insisted on putting 4, 5 and 7 on cable channels 4, 5 and 7, where the OTA signals interfered with the cable signals. The Continental Cable systems in surrounding communities did it right - they put 4, 5 and 7 on 24, 25 and 27.<P ID="signature">______________

They did it right -- other than the fact that you need a converter or cable-ready TV to get the channels. Couldn't they have used something like 3, 6 and 8, respectively?
