WHDH Blows Off NBC Golf For Rita Coverage

It appears that WHDH Channel 7 has blown off NBC's day long golf tournament coverage (golf started at 9 AM) to show continuous coverage of Hurricane Rita. Just prior to 11 AM they were picking up CNN's coverage, then switched to MSNBC's coverage. I don't know if they plan to stay with Rita all day or join the golf in progress later on.

Certainly this is a major news story (the secong major hurricane to hit the Gulf region of the U.S. in almost a month) but I'm sure there are a few golf fans not happy with Channel 7 pre-empting the golf.
Mark

Kudos to WHDH Channel 7. They are acting in a very responsible manner.
More than can be said for WCVB Ch. 5 that is pre-empting Chris Matthews Show on Sundat to the Dead Zone of 5: 30 AM so that Channel 5 can make a fast buck with a steroid ladenend pre Patriots Show when Channel 5 doesn't even carry the Pat's. They are on Channel 4. Go Pats! But would like to see Matthews too not at 5:30 in the morning.

And this is a bad thing?
I wished WNBC did that, as the hurricane is much more important than some stupid golf game.
NBC should have farmed golf out to CNBC.<P ID="signature">______________

'HDH made the right choice to air that coverage for an hour or so, then flip to golf. Golf is awful on television anyways (sorry Golf fans).

Chris Matthews Show is NOT a ratings getter. Patriots ARE a ratings getter. Ratings = Sales. Sales = Money. Money = why Hearst Argyle is in the business = No Chris Matthews Show.

Sorry Parklane.

This move by WHDH today showed WHY they are Number One! They definitely made the right move by airing Hurricane coverage. It confirmed to me that whenever there is breaking news, I can count on WHDH to cover it. These guys are clearly the best station in Boston. Kudos to you Channel 7!

That might be the case if the coverage were actually produced locally. Simulcasting MSNBC's coverage adds nothing new.

Golf, Tennis, Watching Paint Dry, or Hurricane coverage?

Oooh... That's a tough question.

My mind's made up...
Watching paint dry, yup!

Seriously though, I'm sympathetic to WHDH's Golf fan.
But unless you are into Golf, (and I know a few who are), it....
is...

the....

most...

boring... game... to... watch...

If it were my choice, Hurricane coverage wins this one.

The problem with that, though, is that CNBC probably didn't want to give up their wall-to-wall infomercials.

Can you count? The Patriots are on Channel 4 not Channel 5.

There was a time that Channel 5 was less interested in ratings than in good programming. With LaCamera gone that is gone too.

Parklane / DeSoto / Audition Tape / Man with no life...

Just because channel 4 has MOST of the games, doesn't mean Channel 5 should pretend they don't exist! Besides, Channel 5 DOES broadcast the pre-season games and several Monday night and Sunday night games.

And guess why they get ratings? Because people WATCH them because it's good programming! LeCamera is the one who STARTED Patiots All-Access!! Sheesh!

Unlike some here I have a life beyond but including football.

Audition Tape: can YOU count? because youre going to need to count your sheep a little earlier now that chris matthews is on that early ;)

channel 5 is doing something smart. if they kept programming that people didn't want to watch, they'd be Pax.

they already have ABC This Week, and Chris Matthews doesnt bring HALF AS MUCH to the table as This Week does. if you want to see matthews so bad, turn on MSNBC.

Now I have a question for you, because you wanted to be so snide.

Can you READ? This is the WHDH/NBC/Hurricane Coverage thread.

They've given up their wall-to-wall infomercials on CNBC a few times. During the Olympics last year. The best thing about the Olympics was the shortening of the infomercial blocks on Bravo and CNBC. And a few months ago when an AutoRace ran long on NBC, AVP Volleball Aired on CNBC.

Channel 5 employees are a little suspect.

Although the NBC golf coverage was scheduled to run from 8 A.M.-6 P.M. EDT (I believe it actually ended after 6:30), perhaps NBC should have moved the first two or three hours of the Saturday (September 24th) golf coverage to USA or CNBC and have done an NBC News special on the hurricane until 10 or 11 A.M. EDT and then joined the golf in-progress.

Aside from the weekend editions of their morning news shows, does anyone know if ABC or CBS aired any special hurricane coverage on Saturday, and/or whether their morning news shows were extended on Saturday to cover the storm??

I can tell you that CBS went for 5 hours from 7 a.m. to 12 noon. Our local affiliate WABI-Bangor normally runs Nick on CBS programming from 7 to 9. "The Early Show" started at 7 a.m. and host Russ Mitchell said that it was an extended show and that it would be up to individual stations to run part or all of it. I had to run off to work shortly after so I don't know what WABI did.
