I'm was watching SNL on WHDH via antenna, and it suddenly cut out. I usually get 100% signal, but now its 0%. Every other station is fine. Fortunately I get WJAR.
Aren't they supposed to announce on-air that they were closing down the transmitter for maintenance? And wouldn't it be better if they did so after the show ended?

There's no FCC requirement to announce you're shutting down for maintenance. You are required to run an ID ("WHDH-TV Boston", aurally and/or visually) before shutting down & again after coming back on the air) but you don't have to say *why*.
Yeah, if we were doing it at the NBC station I work for I sure think we'd wait for SNL to end! But we don't know the circumstances. Could be something was about to fail in a way that would cause more damage.
