WHEC has been using words scrolling across the screen during their morning show

Across the bottom of the screen that is. It's been that way for a few weeks. WROC had been doing this on their morning show for years. But I notice since 10 has been doing this, 8 has stopped. Is their a contract saying only one station in the market can do this? It looks like it to me.

Re: WHEC has been using words scrolling across the screen during their morning s

That is called a "crawl". They've been around for decades, but came into fashion during 9/11/01 coverage, when there was so much information to transmit in a limited space.
Anyone can do a crawl anytime. There are no restrictions on the idea or the technology. The fact 8 stopped doing crawls when 10 started is likely coincidence.

They're annoying and I hate them. Why is it always the case that when the name of your school is next on the list, the station dumps to commercial ??? Stupid crawls.

That's a shame. The stations in the Syracuse market keep their school closings up for the entire newscast, even during commercials. Instead of just running a crawl, they compress the picture so commercials can still air unobstructed.

???

??? Um, huh? It's a crawl and the "words" are news and wx updates.

8 stopped it probably because to run one requires someone to actually load content into it which would require an actual staff.
