Wheel of Formats: What will 97X be later this year

Okay, let's jump into the time machine and stop on July 2013. What do you think will be 97X's WSUN's new format? Current format holes, that I know of, are as follows:

1. Old School R&B
2. AAA
3. Adult Hits
4. Classic Country
5. Variety Hits (Jack, Chuck, Bob, Max, Alice, or Soundtrack of Tampa Bay...)
6. Gen X
7. Spanish (Salsa)
8. Christian Contemporary
9. Electronic Dance Music
10. Smooth Jazz
11. Classical
12. Love Songs
13. Liberal Talk
14. ESPN
15. Comedy

Let the speculation begin and don't be stupid don't drink and drive!!!

1. Format might work, however WDUV already plays quite a bit of old school R&B. Maybe pick up where WTMP left off, Cox does have a cozy relationship with Tom Joyner and Micheal Baysdan.
2. Can't see the format being tried, maybe a very watered down version. Think 103.7 The River in Richmond.
3. Maybe, Could bring back "The Point" and expand on its playlist. Like expanding the previous 200 songs to like 600+, make it less Rock-Leaning and more well-rounded. Example- play artists like Micheal Jackson.
4. Classic Country can fill a niche in the Immediate Bay Area, that and the outlying areas of Pasco and Hernando. I'd listen.
5. Cox can use its Chuck FM format from the Greensville and Athens, Ga Markets. Only problem is they play a lot of Eagle and Dove music. Making the station more 80's/ 90's oriented may help with that.
6. Could fill in a format hole for 80's and 90's hits, considering 100.7 has gotten far more modern and even 94.9 is focusing more on currents, With only the 80's and 90's music that test extremely well landing on 94.9.
7. Doesn't Tampa also have another rim-shot from the Northern Suburbs playing Spanish.
8. Reach FM, Air One
9. Maybe, usually works well on limited signals
10. Works well on limited signals, would pick up the pieces of WSJT.
11. Maybe Cox could make an agreement with USF to provide Classical Music on 97.1, that would be nice.
12. Its been tried, Love 101.5
13. It's Cox, Cox has a worse track record than Clear Channel as far as only making their Talk Station's Right-Wing, considering Clear Channel at least tried the format in a few markets. However maybe with 97.1's limited signal Cox will give it a try, be nice to hear Thom Hartman and Randi Rhodes.
14. Might be tough with Tampa already having 2 sports stations
15. Is the Comedy format just a fad, has the format actually done well where it was tried.

How about a "REAL OLDIES STATION" that plays the music of the 50's 60's & 70's??? That actually will play the music that does'nt get played anywhere else?????

How about a Real Oldies Station with a LARGE music library and rotation instead of the same 200-600 songs ??...

On second thought... how about ANY format with an expanded, large music library and rotation???

ESPN Radio on 97.1? They'd better stock it with loads of local talent if they want to compete with The Fan. Mike & Mike can only take you so far.

It will still be what it is today, because they have decided this signal can't compete and they are going to basically stop trying. Plus, this isn't necessarily about just using the "listener-driven" model at one station, this is the test market. If ratings and revenue don't drop too much, and costs are almost zero, they will roll it out in lots of markets at their bottom-feeder signals.

Parttimer nails it almost every time. If you're gonna "test" this radio model, the demographic for 97X is one of the select formats you can do it with. You're not trying this with a classic hits or adult contemporary formatted station. Add the fact that most people in the demo for 97X are in fact into iPods, Smartphones, music streaming apps, and the like... the FM signal on 97.1 becomes secondary to the online listening. I totally agree... if they can increase the online listening and ad revenue for this "property" by selling it as something "new" and reaching a much bigger audience far beyond Tampa Bay and the limits of FM 97.1, then people listening within the FM signal become almost secondary and a bonus from a sales and revenue point of view.

I hope I stated that correctly and am getting my point across. :)

Cox has been doing a lot of business with the evil four letter lately. Wouldn't surprise me to see ESPN 97.1.

Question: what is oldies anymore?

When "oldies" radio first started going in the early-mid 80's, the music was roughly 25-30 years old, mid 50's-early 70's rock and roll with some Motown mixed in. Today what is usually marketed as "oldies" is that same mid 50's-early 70's stuff, but now that music is going on 60-70 years old. Except instead of playing a more eclectic mix, they are playing the same 100-200 songs, it gets old hearing "cant buy me love" 4 times in a day.

It has been suggested to me that the new "oldies" is late 70's and 80's rock or classic rock.

So what is it?

Does WLBE My790AM, "The Greatest Hits Of The 50's, 60's, & 70's", cover the Tampa market okay?
What happened to True Oldies 106.3?

Remeber now some of that music that u guys think to put 97.1 to be also its on HD2 channels like u guys pick AAA I think 107.3 HD2 has it

ESPN Radio is on clear channel WDAE-620...

For now. I bet they would rather have more of their programming cleared in this market...

It would be nice for Tampa Bay to have an RNB outlet again. Cox does have five urban ac stations (only the Atlanta and Birmingham outlets have Baisden on a competitor), so it is an open chance for listeners who miss WTMP and WRXB (now a gospel outlet) and don't want to deal with WBTP or WWLD.

I don't think WDUV would play R&B or soul music that either did not make the Top 10 of the Hot 100 chart or crossed over to REGULAR adult contemporary, so a pure urban ac would be ideal, with some rhythmic ac crossover titles thrown in for good measure to keep the bills paid due to demos. The market is 10% Black but anything is possible (San Francisco is still a proven fact of this.)
