When a 1768 ft. radio tower needs a new lightbulb

I have trouble just viewing the climb on video.

Don't know how they do it.

The first time you do it, what if you freeze at the top? I guess they would have to do a helicopter rescue.

I've watched that vid a number of times and I still get sweaty palms and nauseous each time!

I noted the terms "gided" and "guided" in describing the tower.

Also there is one almost equal height tower within a few hundred feet of the tower being climbed and at least one other somewhat shorter tower further away.

Anyone have any idea whose tower this is?

wow that made my stomach turn a few flips just watching it online

Me too.

I got so caught up in the video, I felt like I was about to fall a couple times as if I was really there.

I'm scared of heights too but I had to watch beacuse it was so fascinating.

What if you're all the way up there and suddenly have to go to the bathroom real bad?

You'd better hope you're the bottom guy at that point..........that is if YOU are the one caught short.

They probably better off not eating or drinking anything before going up that tower.

Also, I heard a clap of thunder in the video but I don't know if it's made by the guys, or real, as the clouds look a little threatening.
The video is scary to watch anyways.

Freaky!!!! My legs were getting numb just watching this clip. I don't know what they are paying those guys but whatever it is it's not nearly enough!

If it's not a hot tower (AM), just hope the Boss isn't watching.
If it's an AM tower, and it's energized, try to dribble a lot. I've heard stories of people getting a very uncomfortable burn in their private parts, when the "down-stream" reaches about 1/4 wavelength.

Don't look at me. I get queasy just climbing the ladder to clear my back porch gutters

This reminds me of an incedent several years ago when a couple youngsters, while riding a hot air balloon, had an opportunity for S9+ reception of KKOB using only a diode and earphones, "look, ma, no antenna!". I doubt they actually had a crystal set with them, though. Hey wouldn't that be a place for radio reviewers to check midday adjacent-channel selectivity (targets 760 KKZN Thornton, CO, and 780 KAZM Sedona, AZ) and co-channel nulling ability and sensitivity (targets 770 KCBC Manteca, CA, and the 770 near D/FW)?

I've watched this three times-- I need to have my blood pressure checked. Not sure how much that guy gets paid, but it's no where near enough!

Here in SW Florida we had a very sad incident with a worker who had climbed one of our local towers to do some work and passed away while on the tower. While all the information is not available on just what may have occurred up to this point the link provides what info is available.

This tower was one of the original TV towers in the area but now house the local PBS TV station along with 2-3 radio stations.

Would have been a good time to DX. KKOB shut it down/off the air while the pilot and kids were climbing down the tower.

When this video was posted in another area of the board, a very astute observer noted this is actually the 2000' KRIV TV tower near Houston TX in the Missourri City tower farm.

Yes, that too, but I was thinking BEFORE they shut it off it wouldn't it have been a good test of a radio's selectivity & overload resistance (without desensing)? ;) Or am I the only one that has any interest in pulling in signals so weak they require absolutely NO RF noise from any source, with its center frequency and the strong pest's center separated by no wider than the narrower signal's 0.5dB bandwidth, and the strong pest capable of literally making non-conducting materials glow in broad daylight? ;) (Well ok maybe not quite THAT much of a difference, but it would be nice if some radio could at least pull in something right at the wintertime atmospheric noise level, immediately adjacent to a signal so strong that protective clothing is REQUIRED to prevent serious injury.) :)

There was a YouTube base-jumping off an FM tower video out a few years ago. The head worn camera would go wonkie up when they passed by the FM antennas.

Thanks for that information.
