Anyone know? This show should always be on the air.

the Funniest Comedy Show, EVER on TV. i've seen every episode over a dozen times and they still crack me up. Gleason and Carney were the Best.

And, it made them a fortune, I am sure; enough to buy a "string of poloponies." (That line always has me curl my lip up.)

Audrey Meadows made a sweet deal when she signed to play Alice: she would get residuals FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE each time an episode was shown. Most residual deals end after a certain number of repeat showings--generally in the single digit category.

I had heard or read that Audrey Meadows was deemed as too attractive in media circles to play the Alice character, and she wanted to prove that she could do so, if someone could take a photo of her just getting up in the morning! That was all it took, I suppose! :)

Actually, Pert Kelton was the only "Alice" I could picture being married to a fat bus driver living in a Bed-Stuy tenement. Audrey Meadows was married to the CEO of Continental Airlines at the time.

It think it was Gleason who said she was too attractive, so she showed up looking pretty frumpy and got the job.

i AGREE with you BUT, Kelton's Alice was more Mean than a funny foil for Ralph, she was Not likable in the role.

Audrey Meadows pre-Honeymooners was a regular on the 15 minute " Bob and Ray Show" on NBC-TV three times a week at 7:15PM ET during 1951-53..Bob and Ray, being primarily radio comedians, played all the parts in their skits. In TV, they needed a female leading lady to play off of. Audrey was very good in these shows. Several skits from "Comedy Channel" reruns of Bob and Ray are on YouTube..

My favourite line from the Honeymooners

Alice) What's wrong

Ralph) I have a stomachache

Alice) My that is a big problem

^ A similar soliloquy from Ralph, paraphrasing of course:

"Why is it that you cannot support your husband like other wives do? Napoleon had Josephine behind him. George Washington had Martha behind him. Abe Lincoln had Mary behind him. What do I have behind me? <Alice looks him over> Don't....you....dare!!!"

cd

RALPH: Money is all you care about. Try putting your arms around a cash register.

ALICE: I can't even put my arms around you.
