When did Pacifica Radio contract CC to air Democracy Now

Democracy Now is not produced by KPFA. It's produced independently, and available to all kinds of stations. Pacifica, NPR, college stations, etc.

See http://www.democracynow.org/about.

"Green 960" is still listed on the affiliates list, so apparently they've had it for a while now. Looks like it's offered as a podcast only.

I know in the intro on LinkTV the opening of Democracy now is "From Pacifica radio its Democracy now with Amy Goodman."

That is a contractual deal made when "DN!" returned to Pacifica stations (it was "in exile" for a while in 2002 when the Pacifica stations dropped the show after Goodman was accusing WBAI's then-PD of sexual harassment and took the show to Downtown Community Television). The opening credit is to honor the fact that the show started on Pacifica and is on the Pacifica network (and radio stations that pick up "DN!", NPR stations in particular, are encouraged to become Pacifica affiliates).

Democracy Now! is pretty much available to any station that wants it, regardless of station format, ownership or affiliation. It's a bona fide public service program in the classic sense. It accepts no for-profit advertising or government funding whatsoever and goes deeper into the overlooked/controversial stories. And it gets a handful of listeners too.

KPTK 1090 Seattle (CBS O&O) airs it on the weekends. Hell, KGO could air it. If Cumulus wants to be cheap in the overnight hours, they might as well air something HALFWAY decent with those 50,000 watts.

I don't think Pacifica "contracts" it out. Just ask for it, give some basic info on the station and what time you'll be airing it. Done. (And kindly let them know if you decide to drop it.) There's no "market exclusive" rule that I know of with Democracy Now! (even in areas with full blown Pacifica stations/Democracy Now! affiliates.) As long as it gets on the air somewhere, I guess.....
